Bugs mentioned something about violence and censorship and then I looked up Manhunt 2 which was banned in Ireland and the UK then censored and eventually released.

It's only £7.99, chump change so I impulse ordered out of curiosity. I looked up Metacritic and the PS2 version gets better ratings than the Wii one. 67 vs 62 average.

Uh oh.

PS2:

83
PSM3 Magazine UK
There's more to this than controversy. Intelligent, demanding brains, patience...and a strong stomach. [Sept 2007, p.76]
82
Play UK
Manhunt 2 offers heaps of grisly and depraved action, and we would have heartily recommended it to fans of the franchise. [Issue#155, p.76]
80
Playstation Official Magazine UK
If you're a horror geek, you'll have seen worse. But you won't often have seen much better. [Christmas 2008, p.98]
79
3DJuegos
Manhunt 2, rather hesitant in delivering its ulterior motif, is monstrously violent, extremely gory and smashingly bold when it comes to moral values. Suffering from procrastination along with other external factors, it manages to come to the spot and attract our attention, with much to yearn technically. Yet in terms of controversy, as the game intended when it started, success is the word. It is, so far, one of the most violent game in PS2 lines.

Game Informer
For those of us that loved the original, Manhunt 2 is a trip that’s worth taking, even if it’s not nearly as memorable or enjoyable. While I applaud the series for it’s uncompromising take on morality and violence, it’s hard not to notice that recent titles like "Mass Effect" and "BioShock" have covered similar territory in a more mature – and much more enjoyable – fashion.

GameSpot
It's not as shocking as you'd expect, but Manhunt 2 still satisfies your primal instincts.
Wii:
88
Games Master UK
Shocking for all the right reasons...Simply, it's never been so difficult to keep a Wii-mote still. [Sept 2007, p.79]
80
NGamer UK
Punchy, cheap and cheerful splatter gaming. [Christmas 2008, p.60]

IGN
The AI doesn't feel as good as the first game, the setting and environments don't feel as menacing, and the story is definitely weaker. That isn't to say that Manhunt 2 isn't a good game, because it is.
76
GameZone
Manhunt 2 struggles to break new ground, but will satisfy your blood-thirst and offer some new challenges that will keep you entertained, satisfied and disgusted all at the same time.
75
Gaming Age
The biggest draw for most will be the controls, but while you might enjoy the added effect that mimicking the executions with the remote can bring, I found it a bit tiresome later on, and distracting from the visuals.
75
n-Revolution Magazine UK
Not so much a great game as a gruesomely compelling experience. [Issue#22, p.72]

Why? Because of the Hamster smashing scene? It's censored.

I believe everything is censored so badly that it fucks up the entire game.

Right before this game launched I saw one of the funniest things of my life.  I was at a horror convention and Take-Two (or whoever published it) had a booth with a couple copies of the game.  Huge line of people waiting to play it.  Sadly I never played it but I did get a very nice t-shirt that I still wear today.

Getting back to the funny part, I tried to go back later the next day to play and there was only one person playing. . . but it was a guy dressed in this movie quality Jason costume.  Looked fantastic. Just just some blood and a hockey mask you know. Plus, the dude was huge.  Easily 6'3" and 210 lbs.

So he's there playing the game (with the hockey mask on) and it's funny enough watching him sneak up and garrote people.  But as some point he got into trouble and got killed.  He stepped back, looked up, and shouted this awful frustrating scream and then put down the wiimote and wandered off.

Good times.

Free T-shirt, can't beat that.

I have this game but I forget for which console.  I remember overhearing a really annoying dude hitting on a game store clerk and telling her he knew all about this game -- that it was going to be the first to receive an "X-rating" from the ESRB (and that it was published by Nintendo).

Well, you've got the paedophile's game of choice, so you may as well complete the collection and pick up the serial killer's.

Still, you should've got the original.

LOL Foolz.

I hear there is a way to unlock the violent kills. Action replay? I need to research this...

Well I got it, played a bit.

Not violent at all so far. That probably has a lot to do with the censorship, you cant see shit firstly. Not only that the QTE icons are in the top left corner so you aren't even looking at the screen when you perform them anyway.

Graphically its pretty obvious that this was made with the PS2 in mind, although its more detailed and has better colour saturation on Wii. It has a nice graphical style though. It played like splinter cell which is a nice suprise, only the controls aren't anywhere near as good.

It has great presentation and atmosphere going for it. Some neat motion controls, lean by tilting the nunchuk, combat and IR aiming.

It's pretty decent and I can see myself agreeing with IGNs 7.7 review. I think the controversy has overshadowed a cult game that is a decent play through.

One time I was at the game store and I saw a copy of Manhunt 2 sitting on the shelf. I thought "hey, that looks enticing and affordable". Almost bought it too.

If you like it you should pick the original, seriously. It's meant to have an interesting concept, great atmosphere etc. and it's not censored!

The first one is the way to go, indeed. I'd get it in a heartbeat if I had a PS2.

I don't know how it got there, but I remember seeing a copy of the original for $30 in K-Mart. This was after it was banned here. Wish I'd picked it up.

Is it on Xbox?

It depends if MH2 is connected storywise to this one. Otherwise its a decent play through but I can't see myself wanting more.

Yes it is, but the story isn't related as far as I'm aware. Basically you're in a snuff film, and you've got to fight for survival, or something.
