The future is finally here, the VR revolution begins today with the launch of Oculus. Well most of us will get it in a few weeks. Still VR officially launched today and that means there is a ton of coverage. This is a system launch, just like PS or Xbox. The rift is getting great reviews all around from the tech sites.

"At the same time, the Rift can’t be fully evaluated sight unseen. Now that it’s a real consumer product, anyone with even a potential interest in the promise of real, workable virtual reality in the home needs to find a way to at least try it out for themselves, to see if they can really stand waiting for those coming improvements. Describing the Rift’s virtual reality with words and pictures and videos projected on a 2D screen is like trying to describe the “real world” to someone in Flatland. You just won’t understand until you’re there."

The biggest surprise coming out of our Oculus Rift testing? This isn't just a piece of hardware. It's a platform. Once you strap on the display and immerse yourself into Oculus Home - the front-end of the system - this becomes obvious. Buying games, accessing your library, downloading content, hooking up with friends, watching media, launching titles and switching between them - it's all done within a beautifully realised VR world. There's a console-style sense of solidity and polish to the whole enterprise. And as long as you stick to Oculus' minimum PC spec, just about everything just works.

Most people have heard about the Oculus Rift and the hype surrounding the rise of virtual reality by now, but few people have yet to actually experience the jaw-dropping magic of high-end VR. On Monday, the highly-anticipated Oculus Rift launched, and with it, the next chapter of entertainment and art was ushered in.

After using the Rift on and off for the last week, it's clear that this is the virtual reality experience we've been waiting for. This isn't the low-cost Google Cardboard or even the mid-range Samsung Gear VR headset. Armed with Facebook's war chest of funding and the smartest minds in the VR industry, the Oculus team has crafted the best tool for escapism since the television and internet were born.

Impressions as always are super positive. I haven't seen someone who tried it who didn't think it is the next form of entertainment. The only people who try to fight that are those that never tried it. It's still going to be a slow build up to acceptance because of the sickness issues and price. But in time VR will be everywhere and be the most important tech of this decade.

Everyone is waiting to grab some virtual ass except GG, who's waiting on the virtual rock textures.

Times like these I am particularly sad at the demise of the arcade.  Back in the 80ies and (most of the) 90ies I didn't care too much that my parents could not afford to buy me the home consoles to play all the games because I could still experience so many great ones at the arcades simply by saving my pocket money.  Wish I could go and try this out with just a few euros.

*cough* Augmented Reality *cough*

VR will be an innovation on the scale of HD TV's and blu ray.  Augmented Reality has the potential to change everyday life the way last seen in smartphones.

They are going to have demo units of the Vive in a major electronics chain here. I'd have to travel into central London to see it.

Not worth it.

Oh who cares about a heads up display. That's just an evolution of a screen, it's just your phone on your face. VR will transport you to another reality.

That article GG linked too that shows all rift impressions is awesome. Thank you GG for all the updates.

Seems like the general consensus is that it delivers on the promise of feeling like another world but there isn't enough unique content yet and the lack of touch controls hurt.

AR is VR with 2 camera's stuck on the front.  Thus it is all that VR could ever hope to be and more.  VR goggles without AR is a stopgap sollution.  You heard me, VR is a stopgap to AR!

Bow down to the glory that is the future of VR, heathen!

The Sulon Q has many flaws, but it is still early days both for the ill-fated VR and the wonderchild that is AR.

A new piece of hardware brings new fanboys; new fanboys need a new designation...

Since there's already Cows, Sheeps and Hermits, I propose "Turtles" because they're enclosed in a shell.

What say ye?

Lol. I'm sure after prolonged use VR may turn us into mutants too.
