i edited my post in an attempt to answer your questions more directly

Yeah, pretty much (oh and I did get Locoroco, and think it's a game perfectly suited to the iPhone).
ohh great i copied before i posted ... but just the edit
edit: sorry i did not address your questions. will try to as best i can.
1. Story mode is a bit on the short side, that is true. However not as some would have you believe. Also being a platformer it's very replayable and there are a lot of things to discover/collect in any given level. Also some challenges you can only do with more players so there is some life there.
2. True. The level builder is so fully featured that it makes it less user friendly. The options are huge but it does take time depending on what you want to create. I suppose you could do a few simple levels in not too long but the more elaborate levels take a lot of work. Personal experience: i tried it but i didn't have the patience for it. Still good for a few laughs though.
3. Only played online multiplayer and it was a little bit all over the place because the lag was very bad, but i understand my experience is probably not typical. There are instances when the camera doesn't quite know where to go or whom to follow, but it's not such a big deal
It's worth it for the narration alone. I'm not kidding.
Anyway in my brief experience (am about to go back it, curse you FIFA!) the levels have a huge amount of replay value as you look for all the hidden stickers and what not in the levels and as you go along and get more stickers you'll want to go back to older levels and see if you can put them in specials to get even more items, so it should have pretty good value if you're happy to try and 100% it.

my estimation of stephen fry went up immensely after the narration work on LBP.

Honestly if the campaign mode of the game had been released 20 to 15 years ago when platformers were king, this would have been right there with AcroBatz and Bubsy. Plus, I hated the physics of the game. Sackboy was too "floaty" for my tastes. It was like playing an entire game with Luigi.
i said something along these lines before my post was eaten up by the editor. ... well about it not being all that great a platformer and about the physics engine making it feel somewhat "floaty" and imprecise (which i understand is a deadly sin for a platformer worth its salt) ... however i think the charm and production values (not to mention overall trendyness) make the game worthwhile. it's no revolution, but it's a good game ... especially at a reduced price.
i hereby declare that The God of Trendy has commited hubris

Feh I say, feh!
Well even though it sounds like a shitty platformer (with oodles of charm - gag), I think I'll have to get it for collecting purposes at the current $40 USD.
As a platformer in terms of controls and extras like powerups and such, yeah its on the weak side. But it makes up for it with superb level design, I am talking Super Mario good. I would call it a simple platformer, not a crappy one. The game will take 5-7 hours to playthrough and then you can go back and try to find all items and ace every level (not die) which will double your playtime. And if you want you can still try the level editor, you can play around and mess with it, create your own challenges. If you do decide to make a level that will take FOREVER, sadly you wont have much incentive since no one will play it but you.
You need to ask yourself is a platformer that lasts 5-7 hours on one playthrough worth $40. Yes its of excellent quality but you will only be getting a small fraction of what makes this game so amazing.

The God of Trendy is a lesser god. The upper God of Justice is here a to settle this case with his infinite righteousness. My justice shall shine light in the darkness of Asspro's confusion.
Asspro, only buy LBP when Vader buys Little King's Story.
Justice has been served!

Yeah it is sadly. But if the levels are SMB good then it's a no brainer -- I'm getting it after this post.

Well, I'm not going to hold LBP ransom based on Vader's purchases. Even though I'm a collector and an RTS for the Wii is appealing, even I'm not impressed with what I have seen of LKS.

Once set in motion, it cannot be stopped.
LBP is now down to $40 on amazon.com. I've held off on the game, because traditionally I have not enjoyed games that are self-aware of their coolness (like Patapon and Locoroco), and LBP always had that smell about it.
GS lists the bads on the game as being:
