robio said:Pretty intense looking game there. It's pretty intimidating, but so was Final fantasy Tactics when I first played that, and that had to be one of the most rewarding games I've ever played. This will go up on "the list."
The list of reasons why Darth has to buy me a DS!
The most complex game hes ever played?
Why not just stick that on the box and doom it at retail?

Even so I'll get it. I think the most complex game I've ever tried to play was ... P.TO II for the Saturn.
Players could assume one side of the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, acting as naval commander, organizing fleets, building new ships, appropriating supplies and fuel, and even engaging in diplomacy with other countries. The player can choose one of several World War Two battles to simulate, or could control the entire Pacific campaign well before the Attack on Pearl Harbor.
The game plays unlike anything else I have EVER played!
It's also an incredibly colorful game. I think the darker backgrounds make the deep colors stand out that much more.
There's literally like 2 hours worth of Basic Tips, Tutorials and Advanced Tips to go through... It's not mandatory, but to grasp the concepts, it's highly recommended. I haven't minded one bit though, as this game is very, very intriguing and I --WANT-- to know everything about it!
I am traveling this weekend and should be able to play it quite a bit (being away from SFIV, inFamous and Sacred), so I should be able to give some more in-depth impressions come Saturday or Sunday.
between this and valkyrie DS?
Wow. I love Valkyrie and haven't played enough of Knights to give you a solid answer yet!
Ironically enough, those are the TWO games I am bringing with me this weekend!
They share some slight things in common: They are both SRPG's with a twist; they both ask you to sacrifice your allies at times. So far, I got away without sacrificing anyone in Valkyrie, I don't know if that will be possible with Knights. Moral dilemma!
It's hard to describe this game, but I'll try:
You control a wisp. The wisp shows where your sylus is pointing to onscreen on the battle screen. With this wisp, you choose weapons to drag to Knights and other allies on the battlefield.
You drag a weapon or item to an ally, charge it, aim it and attack. Charging the attack takes away your time for that Round. When time runs out, the round ends. You have a set amount of rounds to fill a Kill Gauge at the bottom of the screen, or it's Game Over.
Your enemies will attack the Wisp (not your allies) and their attacks will deplete the time for the round. This is where the whole "bullet hell" likeness comes from. The enemies attacks often have a spread or homing effect to them that makes them very similar to shooters (Ikaruga).
The effects of the items or weapons vary depending on whether or not you have Skill Points(?). You replenish your Points as you beat enemies. Magic crystals are released as enemies are defeated; you collect these to replenish your Points.
So, in a typical battle, you need to drag weapons to allies, charge and attack and collect crystals --ALL WHILE-- avoiding your enemies attacks. Even though there are rounds and things happen in "turns" the battle still plays out in real-time. You'll hear KitK described as turn-based and real-time, but you've never played a strategy game like this one before!
It gets more complex than I already described. Weapons have attributes (Lawful or Chaos). You can only use the weapons that apply to the current state of the Battlefield (Law or Chaos). There is a fog that covers the Battlefield that depletes as you use special attacks. As the fog depletes, you earn less crystals. The Wisp --CAN-- flip the attribute of the Battlefield to replenish the fog and change the weapons you are able to use.
If this sounds unnecessarily complex and unplayable, it actually turns out to be anything but! The rounds play fast, colorful, furious and fun! The battles are quick, most of the time is spent on the planning phase... --DON'T-- let what was said here discourage you! Missing out on this game would be a crime! With the absolute lack of innovation we've been seeing as of late, it's --GREAT-- to see dev. teams trying different things!
...it REALLY doesn't get much more "different" than this!
After playing this game this weekend (in between climbing mountains and drinking lots of alcohol), I have come to at least one conclusion: They have mis-named this game, it should have been called "Je Ne Sais Quoi." There's just something about it, and, yes, I'll say it again: the last game that gave me this type of feeling was TWEWY!
I won't repeat what I've already written, but I keep on being impressed by the deep color scheme of this game and all of the little graphical details you'll miss if you don't pay attention. This was true for Riviera. This was true for Yggdra Union, and it is true for Knights in the Knightmare. The artists for these games just go the extra mile to make it that much more distinct than many other games.
The gameplay system is sooo fresh and unique, so simple yet so intricate. It's an SRPG, but it keeps you on your toes like a shooter would. There's simply NOTHING else like it! You'll play first and be confused. You'll play some more and discover a tidbit here and there. You'll gladly go back and replay the early battles just to do it "right"... You'll do it "just one more time", "just one more time"... This game will make the perfectionist/completionist in you SCREAM... but it will tempt the hardcore shooter fan in you like a siren on a rock in the sea. The stat heavy, rpg fan side of you will be in heaven, the quick-action, play a battle in five minutes, action side of you will be satiated...
You'll swear to yourself (and out loud) that it's NEVER going to make sense, then a beaming smile will come over your face as things just start to "click" one after the other...
I must say that the game industry NEEDS more developers like ST!NG, as they are CLEARLY not afraid to take risks and try new things, and make the absolute best use of the hardware they are working with! I --CANNOT-- see this game working on --ANY-- other platform. The touching, drag and dropping and dodging with the stylus just works soooooo well, to play it with a control pad or analog stick would be unfathomable!
I want to reach out and slap all the lazy gamers who are intimidated by this game! All of you whiners that say casuals are taking over the industry, yet have the audacity to ignore one of the freshest "core" offerings in the last few years, need to go out buy this game and FORCE YOURSELVES to learn how to play it! I guarantee when I see The Legend of Starfy sell a bazillion more copies than this, and I hear someone complain there's nothing out there for "gamers" anymore, they WILL be hearing from me!
Please. Please. Please. Take a word of advice from Olde Leo and GIVE THIS GAME A CHANCE ! ! !
Quotes taken from the 8.5 / 10 "Great" Destructoid Review:
"I have no problem saying that I'm extremely excited about Knights in the Nightmare. I've found myself talking about it often, to many people. But it's such a deep and complex game that I feel like I'm not doing the game justice, and perhaps I'm confusing everyone I try to explain it to. Even when trying demonstrate how the battle system works to my co-workers, I feel like I've let the game down somehow, and it seems that all I've done is give them pause on what is a fantastically original title. For this review, I'll do my best to explain how the battle system works, but it has to be said that only by trying it for yourself will you fully understand how deep and involving this title can get."
"In the end, no other DS title plays like Knights in the Nightmare. It's one of those games that gives you as much as you put into it. If you invest the time to learn the game play, you'll be greatly rewarded with a fresh, addictive battle system. This is gamer's game that begs to be explored more. Knights in the Nightmare may not be a good fit for the casual or impatient gamer, but if you're one that's tired of the same old DS strategy role-playing titles, you likely be thrilled by this unique game."
About This Game
Somewhere between heaven and the underworld -- in the center of a quiet lake -- stood an ancient castle known as Aventheim. One night, without warning, denizens of the netherworld emerged and slaughtered the kingdom; nary a soul was left alive.
Within an abandoned, long-forgotten church deep in the woods, a wisp is set free. Bereft of memory, it is drawn toward the monster-infested castle and re-awakens the souls of the vanquished knights, leading them back towards the fallen stronghold to confront the very forces of evil that took their lives...
Not easily placed in any one genre, the game requires players to throw out everything they know about roleplaying and strategy games and embrace something altogether new and fresh. Frantic, energetic action mixes with thought-provoking tactical gameplay, all within a beautifully-rendered fantasy setting and presented through a captivating, emotional narrative. Dripping with style and originality, Knights in the Nightmare delivers an unforgettable experience.
