There are still a few more on the way like the Rayman remake which I'm very much looking forward to! The 2D artwork is looking amazing!

But I agree that 2D platforming has been revived this gen. For me, I'm very happy with New Super Mario Bros. DS, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and DKC Returns. And damn does DKC Returns destroy every 2D/2.5D platformer that comes before it! The level design is unparalleled!

Also, Limbo and A Boy and His Blob are amazing 2.5D platform puzzle games.

I'll be honest, I prefer 2D platforming over 3D, but I will say that Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 is all we need as far as 3D platforming goes!

Now Playing: Golden Sun Dark Dawn, God of War Ghost of Sparta, and DKC Returns

Nyxquest is designed around Wiimote and nunchuck, how do you control it on the PC?

I make no claims to know the sales of 2d platformers this generation, but the fact that there are so many of them indicates to me that they were published, therefore, publishers got over whatever concerns they had about the market viability of 2d platformers.  Most of them are on the XBLA and PSN services, where I understand they have done quite well.

The fact that you mention the XBLA and PSN, does not strengthen your point. I do not consider only putting 2D platformers on downloadable services as healthy. The only place 2D platformers are somewhat considered healthy is on the Wii and the DS. Heck without Nintendo the retail platformer genre would be pretty much dead right now. And come to think that some people thought Nintendo would abandon the 'core' gamer.

But at least the platforming genre is still evolving with Galaxy's gravity mechanic, NSMBWii's multiplayer, de Blob's painting stuff, LBP creating and sharing, DKCR use of background and foreground, etc. The same can not be said about the fighting genre, which will remain stale until someone makes a new Bushido Blade, dammit!

How is Metroid Other M in any way a platformer?

Anyway LittleBigPlanet has been the most unique and interesting platformer this gen.

The sequel goes further away from the originals platforming roots. You cannot possibly call the sequel a platformer anymore. It is more 'make whatever you want' genre. But honestly we had these sharing and creating things on the PC for years, but LBP bought that awesomeness to the consoles.

It really is like a platforming resurgance this gen. led by DK, SMG 1 and 2.  Let us not forget about the Prince of Persia games, though the two this gen were kinda meh.

I was trying to forget them.

Was Super Metroid regarded as a platform game? Other M is played a lot in a 2D perspective and you jump about a lot on platforms. Hence, platform game.

Metroid and Metroidvanias are more exploration/action games. Unlike classic Castlevania for contrast.

There are sections that are more about platforming but those exist in almost every game, even FPS...

Meh, different strokes for different folks. I'd play a Metroid or better yet Metal Slug over Mega Man, that doesn't mean they're wholly better, just very different, despite having jumping and shooting in common.

I know PC gaming has had mods for years but I have yet to see one example of a game that is like LBP. LBP is not a game where you can also do mods. The entire game is built and integrated with creating and sharing in mind. A lot of PC games with mods are external, they have nothing to do with the product you have to go through the internet to find the mods and install them. The games where the level creators and mods are a part of the game don't have it integrated in the same way LBP does cause that game is not about creating and sharing.

Everything in LBP is connected to the "mod" aspect. The single player unlocks items and tools to use in create. The menu allows access to millions of levels at the push of a button, which you can play with friends and its all connected to the game. There is an in depth tutorial to teach the player to create, even without online you can just make levels for yourself or just fool around in the create mode.

I don't see any examples of a game like that on PC, and if there is its probably not in this genre. What LBP does is something new.
