This has easily one of the ugliest art styles I've ever seen tbh. Still the overall effect is alright.

What an incredible first effort from Vigil!

THIS is TRULY a development team to watch in the future!

Reminds me of David Jaffe and SCEA's Santa Monica Studios before Jaffe turned into a psychotic douche!

The quality and the production values are of that of an Established Studio!

The game ALSO has that God of War-like pacing where you just can't stop yourself; where you just can't wait to see what they are going to throw at you next.

The fighting is pure visceral! Do you chop, chop, chop the zombified remains of the human race? Do you pick them up and slam them head first into the ground? Do you pick 'em up and crush their skulls in your gauntlet? Or, do you wait for the flashing "O" to appear and finish 'em with a finishing move? Ah! Choices!

Killing the enemies in different ways gets you more Currency --OR-- Rage --OR-- Health! (Think GoW's Red-Orb, Magic or Health pick-ups!)

Maybe you just have to see it in motion?

For once, you get a consistent presentation throughout a game. Each and every being in the game looks like it got individual attention from a comic book artist.

It looks like World of Warcraft meets Heavy Metal... Everyone and thing is BUFF and the BRIGHT, POPPING colors just make your pulse race. Totally indescribable in words. You just have to play it to see what I mean.

This game out "Metal"s Brutal Legend, believe it or not!

Imagine if Link got all 'roided-up, took fighting lessons from Kratos and the Apocalypse came to Hyrule. THAT'S Darksiders!

Talk about takin' the wind out of your sails!

IGN (US) Charles Onyett gave the game a 7.8, as opposed to IGN (UK) which gave the game an 8.9, as opposed to IGN (AU) which gave the game a 9.0!

Reading this review... I dunno... the blandness of the writing just SCREAMS to me of a reviewer that just doesn't know how to have a good time. To further this, I'd like to party with the guys from IGN (AU)...

...the American dude just needs to loosen up and get laid.

At least that is the impression I got!

This game is a BLAST! Ignore the solitary buzz-kill!

Charles Onyett says:

"War's actual personality, unfortunately, doesn't manage to match up with his reputation. He may not be a traditional heroic figure, but there's never a doubt that "hero" is the role he's meant to play here. Since he's the framed victim in a corrupt scandal, it's easy to identify with his desire for revenge and you don't exactly pity the throngs of demons he slices through."

Matt Wales of IGN (UK) says:

"As you've probably heard already, a much more accurate comparison is Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series, although it's also fair to say that Vigil has cast its net pretty wide in the name of inspiration. There are plenty of quite open nods to the likes of Legacy of Kain (remember that?), Metroid and Shadow of Colossus too. What's impressive though is that, despite happily cribbing the best parts of videogames from the last decade, Darksiders is so expertly designed, it somehow never feels derivative and the result is a game that's vast, relentlessly imaginative and, above all else, hugely enjoyable."

"Darksiders is a relentless barrage of incredibly well-executed set-pieces that ensure your time between elaborate dungeon-crawling and puzzle-solving is equally memorable. Despite the size of the world, travelling from point A to B is never a slog and Vigil delights in chucking in everything from totally unexpected mini-boss encounters to on-rails shooting and run-and-gun sections. It's not always totally consistent in quality, with the run-and-gun segments in particular proving a little uninspiring, but the sheer range of activities means it's hard to begrudge a few flawed sequences. Crucially though, Darksiders' core mechanics are near faultless and everything from the game's camera to War's fluid, weighty movement is supremely polished and beautifully implemented."

It obviously feels somewhat derivative if you're going to make comparisons to other games.  Derivative just that it's derived from something else in some way, it's not inherently bad.

Cam Shea of IGN (AU):

"Well, we're very pleased to report that Darksiders is a stellar first effort from Vigil. Its gaming influences, you see, are not the only things it wears on its sleeve. It's also clear just how much legendary comic artist Joe Madureira brought to the game – and we're not just talking about character design. Yes, War is a certified bad-ass and the other designs are all chunky and Madureira-ified, but there's a subtle comic book sensibility that permeates the visual design as a whole. For a gritty, post-apocalyptic world, there's quite a lot of colour in Darksiders, and an almost painted quality to many of the textures. This comes as a very pleasant change after so many gritty, urban games that can't seem to escape from a dull grey and brown palette."

"Another couple of things that are clear when playing through Darksiders – the team was given the time it needed to do the game justice, and this was very much a labour of love. Simply put, Darksiders is jam packed full of mechanics and ideas. It's as if the team kept saying 'wouldn't it be cool if?', then found a way to put it in. This exuberance and enthusiasm may hurt the game in a handful of places, and it may leave Darksiders' control mechanics as a daunting proposition for non-gamers, but on balance it comes together well.

So. What can you expect from Darksiders? You can expect a decent length adventure that spans all sorts of environments; from very urban cityscapes where the dead stagger about the gutted ruins of civilisation, to arid, sand-blasted desert structures where giant worms glide beneath the earth's surface searching out prey. You can expect all sorts of challenges, from gladiatorial combat arenas to very traditional dungeon puzzle solving, from battles on horseback to traversal-focused platforming. You can also expect an epic heaven-and-hell storyline, with the protagonist War - one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse - trying to both clear his name and take down The Destroyer.

War controls well from the outset, and gets more and more versatile as the game progresses. In terms of movement abilities he can climb walls with creep on them, wall-run along certain grooves and ledges using his gauntlet, swing hand over hand along pipes, double jump and glide (thanks to ethereal shadow wings – which can also be used to ride updrafts), swim through water, and grab and drag certain objects (and later grab and 'Shockwave Punch' objects)."

Yes, Cam Shea ftw. Nyaa

They made it appear as if I'd won a competition in Hyper but hadn't (runner up) so after following it up sent me 8 or so games instead of 1. Most not that great, but stilll. Nyaa

What sucks is that I think Darksiders will be overlooked.

And THQ is stupid to release this on the same day as Bayonetta.

I hope Darksiders sells well but I have a feeling it won't. Sad

I know, it's very sad. Sad

but when you are a hobo lurking to find the game in the bin ... there is a bright side to that Happy

basically i thought i could safely just ignore this game as just one (and maybe not even one of the better ones) of the DMC/GoW clones alongside Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno etc.  the frequent use of the word Zelda in comparison has changed all that and upgraded its status to "ah, i'll buy that at a hobo price"

I would get it over Bayonetta any day of the week.

However I have bad feelings towards Darksiders, you see the game sponsors a few shows I watch regularly on Sky and every frigging advert break for the last few weeks I have had to put up with Darksiders adverts. At the start of the programme, then in every advert break in between.

Just, awful.

I also don't like it when developers rip other people's work. Anyhow I will get it at hobo price.
