You can't cel shade every freaking wii game. I dont want a cel shaded Metroid Prime 4 thanks.

It makes sense for Mickey but not for every game to be cel-shaded.

If someone had told you that the next Red Steel was going to be cel shaded you would have balked. Look at the game now. I think it's all a matter of aesthetic focus.

Rather than thinking that for a Wii game to look good is has to be cel-shaded, rather we should be wanting developers to put in the budget, resources and skill into making better graphics overall.

And I did balk at Red Steel 2.

They could do a game that looks better than Metroid Prime 3 in a realistic style and it would still look good. Or something as good looking as Darkside Chronicles.

To achieve such level of detail, you have to make compromises in other areas. Not every game is suited to be on rails.

But you are correct in that the only limitations are the ones the developer team brings to the table, be that budget, time or effort constrains.

Well Nintendo gets a pass cause they know what they are doing with the console, so does Resident Evil as it looks amazing too. Everything else looks like poop. Cell shading for all.

Steel, even though Darkside is on rails, its all being done in real time. A good example is the prison level in House of the Dead Overkill, the environment is all there and running in real time and you actually rotate and move back and forwards through the same areas like you would do in a FPS. It's not like a scrolling Panza Dragoon shooter where once you've passed the visuals its gone and the hardware doesn't have to render it anymore. It's a proper enviroment with a controlled camera.

They could very well sit a 3rd person character in the enviroment and let you walk through those very same environments.

It's hard to find decent screens of RE4 on cube but it looked great and had the same open design of RE5.

Wouldn't you guys be happy if Epic Micky had landscapes of this quality?

Or if the steampunk art was re-created in this quality?

I like to think that this game has good visuals. Although its hard to find screens which do it justice on an SDTV:

Monster Hunter 3 is still looking epic

This isn't cel shaded and it looks pretty nifty. As much as I like Madworld, given that Wii is more powerful than Xbox 1 (minus the inbuilt shaders) the game could have had normal visuals better than Ninja Gaiden Black and sold more as a result aswell.

Mario Galaxy isn't cel-shaded and still looks great.

I think developers are forgetting the design tricks of the past that you use to get good visuals. They've gotten used to having this unlimited power so they don't have to think anymore. There are tons of things you can do like having a 3rd person fixed camera which means you never have to get face close to textures and see how bad they are. Mario Galaxy and RE4 use this technique, as does Overlord DL.

Or using art and lighting and a solid frame rate like Metroid Prime. Or using animation like in Endless Ocean. Or filling the environment with a high pixel fill rate to get detail. Or portholing large environments like in Twilight Princess. Or disguising pop up by making levels where you break the eyeline. Or visual calling or using effects like motion blur or texture pop in.

I'm not saying Epic Mickey should be realistic or cel-shaded just that you can't sell the system short and say that cel-shading is the only way it can have great visuals. It's all on the developers and the ones that want to can do great things.

It annoys me a bit as developers have been making excuses for the past couple of years, not even trying and getting away with it, making out like its a toaster oven that can't do anything better than My Sims like cel shading visuals.

You are right, cel shading is overdone. 2D or bust!

Time to dust-off this thread. GameInformer reports:

Spoiler Alert: “Epic” November Issue Revealed

The rumors have been flying for months. From the outrageous (some actually thought we were bought by Disney, which was quite funny), to the right on (our forums pieced together all the clues from the last issue), the time has come to lay all rumors to rest. The November cover is indeed, Disney Epic Mickey, coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii from Junction Point and Disney Interactive Studios.

This issue is the first of our highly anticipated redesign that subscribers should be receiving around October 12th.

There are a number of other highlights, including a Skate 3 first-look, an in-depth, seven-page report on the relationship between Hollywood and video games, interviews with executives from all three console manufacturers, and much, much more.

But the biggest news is our expanded coverage online that is available to all gameinformer.com visitors. Starting at 4PM CST today we will unveil the first companion piece to the magazine: an exclusive video interview with Warren Spector about his relationship with Mickey Mouse, including a portion of his giant Disney memorabilia collection that is housed at Junction Point. We will also have a photo-blog chronicling many of the outstanding pieces in his collection hitting at the same time.

This is just the beginning of our month of Mickey madness that will unfold over the next three plus weeks. So be sure to watch our Disney Epic Mickey landing page over the following month.

We don’t want to spoil what’s to come, but we have some amazing things in store, including screenshots, animations, and tons of concept art and music.

Watch for the issue in your mailbox over the coming weeks and make sure to come to gameinformer.com for the latest updates and news.

Oh yeah, and one last thing. All GI covers from here on out will feature a full wrap-around cover. Here is the Mickey cover in all its glory. The best part, and the reason we switched to these, is that the subscriber address label and the UPC will be on the back so it no longer clashes with our wonderful cover art.

Feast on this:
