I forgot to add to mine after a certain point. Will I add a single game this year?

What's a gnat?

  1. The Last Campfire - 06/04 - Switch - 8/10 - Enjoyable little puzzler.  There are themes of depression and other forms of angst, but the whole game is just one big warm hug.
  2. World of Goo  -  14/06  -  Netflix mobile gaming  -  8/10  -  I played this game when it originally released on the Wii back when and it's still as unique, inventive and enjoyable.
  3. Lego Builder's story - 3/10 - switch - 10/07 - aside from the aesthetic, this game has very little going for it.
  4. Splatoon3 - 8/10 - Switch - I'm counting the game as completed.  I've obtained the highest rank and played all single player content.  It's Splatoon, it's still great.

How far will I have to scroll down this year?

  1. Silent Hill 3 [PS1] - 1st of January to 7th of January - Neither as amusing as the original nor as interesting as the second. 7/10
  2. Baldur’s Gate 3 [PC] - 10th of November 2023 to 9th of January - Ridiculously long. 9/10
  3. Monster Rancher 1 DX [PC] - 11th of January to 15th of January - The Kittys reign over all. 7/10
  4. Railbound [PC] - 10th of January to 25th of January - 7/10
  5. Monster Rancher 2 DX [PC] - 16th of January to 15th of February -  They made this one a lot harder than the first. 7/10
  6. Viewfinder [PC] - 17th of February to 3rd of March - Someone came up with a fun gimmick and had to put it into a puzzle game. Only problem is, they didn't know how to make a puzzle game. 5/10
  7. Tekken 8 [PC] - 26th of January to 22nd of March (but online continues) - This is a fighting game. 9/10
  8. Chants of Sennaar [PC] - 29th of March to 4th of April - Interesting linguistics/language-oriented game. It can be a bit tedious with the backtracking on occasion. 8/10
  9. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope [PC] - 7th of April to 11th of April - Watching people play Man of Medan finally got me playing these. 7/10
  10. This Bed We Made [PC] - 13th of April to 15th of April (first playthrough) to 16th of April (second playthrough) - Just when I thought it was going into act 2, it ended. I still liked it. 8/10
  11. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes [PC] - 21st of April to 26th of April - Not the most interesting start but ended up being more enjoyable than the other one. 8/10
  12. Sand Land [PC] - 26th of April to 23rd of May - I finished every side quest and it took me 53 hours overall. Why can't more JRPGs be like this? 8/10
  13. Indika [PC] - 24th of May to 25th of May - Weird and surreal but not as weird and surreal as I was expecting. 8/10
  14. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree [PC] - 21st of June to 30th of June - I made it through quite a bit without the Scadutree fragments. I am clearly the greatest. 8/10
  15. POOLS [PC] - 11th of July to 19th of July - Well, it's what I expected. How should I rate this anyway? 7/10 I suppose
  16. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes [PC] - 12th of June to 24th of July - It's no Suikoden, nor is it Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising. 7/10
  17. Dark Souls III [PC] - 23rd of July to 2nd of August - Finally replaying it. I think I like this almost as much as Bloodborne. 9/10
  18. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice [PC] - 5th of July to 11th of August - It took me a long time to get used to this one and I had a few weeks off, but I ended up liking it. 8/10

Played Sekiro two more times. 9/10 actually

    Three times...
  19. Slay the Princess [PC] - 26th of August to 30th of August -  Visual novel Stanley Parable and a lot more interesting. 9/10
  20. Disco Elysium [PC] - 30th of August to 6th of September - Imagine Baldur's Gate 3 with this writing. 9/10
  21. Dark Souls Remastered [PC] - 7th of September to 13th of September - First time playing since 2016. What a great, mediocre and terrible game. 7.5/10

And the credits roll on Resident Evil 2 Remake (Claire 1st Run). Took me 9 hours and 58 minutes to complete with a B ranking.

Now onto Leon's (2nd run)side of the story...

1. Age of Empries IV - 14/01/2023

Norman Campaign.

2. Total War: Shogun 2 - 24/01/2024

Date Campaign.

3. Total War: Shogun 2 - 29/01/2024

Takeda Campaign.

4. Total War: Warhammer II - 10/02/2024

Ikit Claw Campaign.

5. Shadow of the Colossus 2018 - 18/02/2024

A good HD way to play the classic.

6. Total War: Warhammer II - 24/02/2024

Count Noctilis Campaign.

7. Hi-Fi Rush- 05/03/2024

I'm surprised how funny this game actually is.

8. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge - 09/03/2024

Probably the worst final boss I've ever played, but otherwise quite enjoyed this.

9. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos - 12/03/2024

Glad I finally got around to beating the campaign after playing so many matches over the years.

10. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon - 14/03/2024

Only took me 6 months to beat.

11. Devil May Cry - 20/03/2024

Normal mode beat in 1 hour 53 minutes.

12. Devil May Cry (2) - 20/03/2024

Dante Must Die mode finished. Something I never thought I'd do since first playing in 2001.

13. Dragon's Dogma II - 02/04/2024.

While disappointing in terms of a sequel, this was still good fun.

14. Viewtiful Joe 2 - 11/04/2024

Definitely an easier game than the first. Fun for sure, but the endless boss rushes towards the end were meh.

15. Assault Spy - 14/04/2024

Cheap ass DMC-like that was tons of fun to play.

16. Resident Evil: Village - 21/04/2024

This one is genuinely mental and is all the better for it. Drags a bit in the middle, but starts and ends quite good.

17. Resident Evil: Village - 24/04/2024

'Shadows of Rose' completed.

18. Resident Evil 4 Remake - 29/04/2024

'Separate Ways' completed.

19. Resident Evil 2 Remake - 03/05/2024

Beat in 1 hour 41 minutes.

20. Resident Evil 2 Remake - 04/05/2024

Beat in 1 hour 35 minutes.

21. Stellaris - 12/05/2024

United Nations of Man campaign.

22. Resident Evil 2 - 25/05/2024

Leon A completed. This was genuinely fantastic. Glad I've finally played it fully.

23. Resident Evil 2 (2) - 26/05/2024

Claire B completed. Great reshuffling with enough different that most of it felt fresh.

24. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis - 29/05/2024

Having now finally played this... yeah, the remake did a TERRIBLE job.

25. Resident Evil 0 - 01/06/2024

Tried playing this in 2018, but got annoyed by the two character controls, inventory, backtracking and all the rest and stopped about 4 hours in. All that still annoyed me this time, along with the random crashes I kept having, but I powered through. This could have been good, but all the inventory/coop shit really brings it down.

26. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree - 28/06/2024

Almost feels like a sequel with how much content there is. Has the same highs and lows as the main game for better or worse.

27. Elden Ring - 28/06/2024

Annihilated the last three bosses with the Backwards blades.

28. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - 11/07/2024

It's amazing how much muscle memory you keep.

29. Dark Souls: Remastered - 14/07/2024

Back half of this was never really that good, but it's REALLY not good 13 years later.

30. Dawn of War: Soulstorm - 16/07/2024

Necron Campaign. This would have been FAR more tedious without the Persistent Bases mod.

31. Thronefall - 03/08/2024

Early access tower defence game. Fun, but very short.

32. Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition - 11/10/2024

Lady/Trish campaign beat. Lady is quite unique, but fun to use. Trish is an absolute blast.

33. Frostpunk 2 - 21/10/2024

A different game than the first. Less focused on the frost, and more on being an RTS. The campaign was great.

34. Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition - 25/10/2024

Switch edition with the style & weapon switching. Makes it feel much more in line with 4 & 5 and really shows how fully fledged the combat was even then. Actually watched the cutscenes this time which reminded me how good the story is. Mission 15 sucks ass in particular, and a good half of the enemy roster suck, but it's still a great time.

In short Remedy are frauds

Long take: The game provides little substance for what is admittedly killer production value and presentation. I might have more of a soft spot for the og max payne look, the little engine that could vibe to it, Sam lake getting his own mom to play the bad guy, timeless comic strips tbh. But I'd be lying if I wasn't fond of some of the visual imagery from control and Alan wake, big fan of whoever on this team watched way too much Hannibal. That out of th way tho, I think very little warrants praising after that.

The core combat itself is as mundane as Alan Wake, except now headshots do more damage. So hooray we added a whopping half layer to Alan wake combat. It's still largely the same lack of enemy variation. This would be okay if the non combat gameplay was compelling in anyway, but why would it be? The puzzles are brain dead simple, majority of your playtime if anything is just going from place to place. Meandering in a subway or a forest. And this is where the survival horror part of the game should be flexing, but it's a far cry from a Spencer mansion or racoon city. The levels are wide but mostly linear, there is no real interesting reason to back track and work around enemies (ala resi), and said backtracking would then have you humor the idea of spending some resources: but as is there isn't enough enemies to burn the resources you get. I played on hard and was flush with both saga and Alan.

Spending resources means you can still get a bunch of resources from containers, the crossbow is busted for the same reasons it's always busted in a horror game, there aren't enemies constantly in your way to actually burn resources, when you do any combat the game is bog standard third person shooting. And normally I'd say this would be enough for me to damn a game, in fact it is, they made a video game. The gameplay is non negotiable, it should engage beyond being shallow. Oh did I mention the case board and plot board are glorified nothing mechanics, case board more so glorified nothing. Plot board at least had potential.

Anyway the story is also not particularly good. It's fine, plot plays itself out purely on potential intrigue to see how stuff works and what's going on, but there is very little in the way of a character arc in the story, and what it builds up to is lackluster thematically speaking.

and to win gags prestigious "fraud of the year" award there must be a disgusting disproportionate gap between the insane levels of glazing the game is getting vs the actual quality of the game and that's Alan Wake 2. Why? Because.....Remedy are frauds.
