edgecrusher said:Lars from Metallica is really nothing special as a drummer. Almost every band I listen to has a better drummer honestly. He used to come up with some interesting beats in the 80's, especially on Master of Puppets and Justice For All...but even then he was outclassed by many. Really, you take each guy from Metallica individually, and the only one who stands out as being great at what he does "or what he used to do" is James Hetfield and his great Rhythm guitar work. But then you have guys like Dimebag from Pantera or Gary Holt from Exodus who are great at rhythm and solo playing.
Agreed on all counts. I said that in a sarcastic way because I remembered the prevalent opinion throughout the nineties that lifted Ulrich to a status as a drummer that he didn't deserve. A lot of my friends swore by him, and he never was anything special to begin with. Really, there are literally hundreds of more competent drummers out there who could (and can) blow him out of the water in every department available. Nobody could hail Lars as a good drummer after having listened to Lombardo, Hoglan, Ken Owen, Pete Sandoval, or Vinnie Paul.
Metallica have been washed out has-beens for more than 20 years now. That's not changing ever again.
I might pick up Exhibit B this weekend. I'll let you know.

Its really good, though Pleasures of the Flesh will always be the best Exodus to me.
Have you ever heard Chris Amott of Arch Enemy's side band, Armageddon? Just picked up "Embrace The Mystery & 3" from them, really killer. Very 80's style metal a la Fates Warning/Iron Maiden...with a Bruce Dickenson type singer. Really fits his playing style well.
Been on a real Opeth and Mr. Bungle trip lately too. Can't get enough.
As for drummers, have you heard Vinnie Paul's new crap band, Hell Yeah? I don't know what happened to him, but not only does the band suck assholes, but Vinnie's playing is nowhere NEAR the level of what he did in Pantera. He sounds lazy.

The bolded is relevant to my interests. Love Amott's playstyle. Will keep an eye on the band, of course.
And you can't go wrong with Opeth, really. They're mindboggingly good. Mr. Bungle...now that's a name I haven't heard of in years. I remembered listening to:
years and years ago. Very trippy, fucked up music. No easy listening. I can still sing to "Carousel".
bugsonglass said:Is Mr Bungle that weird Mike Patton project?Loved their ska version of the pink panther theme
Yeah, that's the one. I lost track of them after the album I posted. Not really my type of thing.
This shit, however, is priceless. WARNING: ACTUAL PORN SOUND SAMPLES IN THERE. CAUTION ADVISED (before furiously masturbating, that is).
Sing along!
Okay, all you pus-sucking motherfuckers out there
It's time to win a chance to butt-bang
Your daughter's tight virgin cherry ass to caller #666
The urge is too much to take
All I can think about is playing with myself
It's time to masturbate
I've got my Hustler and I don't need nothin' else
Ginger...Ginger
My hand gets tired and my dick gets sore
But the girls of porn want more
So I flip throught the pages one more time
And I just let the jism fly
Yeah yeah yeah
A quarter for a peep show
A private booth or talking to a naked whore
XXX video
976 and I can whack it on the phone
Nobody's home, I'm alone
The devil in Miss Jones
Nobody's home, I'm alone
Aja & John Holmes
We got gushin' gonads, tingling tushes
Hairy balls and hairy bushes
S & M, whips and chains
Pregnant ladies with menstrual pains
We got hand jobs and nipple tweaks
Finger bangs and slappin' cheeks
We got rape, necro & both ways
And lots of hung studs for all you gays
We got incest & bestiality too
We got Sade & the sweetest taboo
We got girls who'll eat your pee and poo
And guys who'd love to fuck your shoe
There's she-males, lezbos, & shaved beav
And D-cup mamas with so much cleave
Senior citizens who love to watch
And sniff those skid marks from your crotch - yeah!
Ain't got no woman next to me
I just got this magazine
And what's on the TV screen
But that's okay with me
I was trained to fuck you baby...

I wish they had more albums. 3 isn't enough. But Patton's other band, Tomahawk, only have 3 as well which are all awesome. Combine them all, and Patton has put out a ton of very diverse badass shit over the years.

I wanted you guys to listen to this one song. Couldn't find a youtube of it so I uploaded it to hotfile. If it's not too much hassle take a moment to download and listen. Hope you can make out the words despite the somewhat harsh Scottish accent.
Special dedication.

Listened. I tried to transcribe the lyrics, but a few spots were just a bit indecipherable,
We took a walk
You had your choices
I was just one of many others
A clutched [truss?]
May be believin'
I could forgive you all
You may have done
Take your chances in the wide and open shores
Hold together all your dreams and make them [grow?]
You took the leaves
Painted a future
That was brighter than any other
You were the leaves
And I had part there
I had that growth gone to another
Show your colours of the chances of her dream
Offer light let [me off and on my hands?]
You told me I was way too quiet
About my love and plans together
You told me I was way too cold
To be forever
To be a father
Take your chances in the wide and open shores
Hold together all your dreams and make them [grow?]
You kiss my lips
Meet me down a path
You are enjoying
Your command
I swim in doubt
This is just all wrong
Can't do without your loving hands
Play your cards till
You let me know just of your plans
[A viable future a viable?] love who understands
If I am sinking I could be saved by a slight of hand
I may not be blessed
I may be way less when I get the chance

We took a walk
You had your choices
I was just one of many others
I clutch at straws
May be believe if
I could forgive you all

Take your chances in the wide and open shores
Hold together all your dreams and make them grow
You took the lead
Painted a future
That was brighter than any other
You were the leaves

Offer light let me offer all I have
You told me I was way too quiet
About my love and plans together
You told me I was way too cold
To be forever
To be a father
Take your chances in the wide and open shores
Hold together all your dreams and make them grow
You kiss my lips
Bid me down a path
You are enjoying
Your command
I swim in doubt
This is just all wrong
Can't do without your loving hands
Play your cards dear
Let me know dear of your plan
Have I a future, have I a lover who understands?
If I am sinking I could be saved with a slight of hand
I may not be blessed
I may be way less, will I get the chance
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space
One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums back in the 90ies, now more poignant than ever
Supernatural really showed me some awesome music
There is:
"Carry on my Wayward Son" by Kansas
And another epic one
"O'Death" by Jen Titus. This is the version used in Supernatural
The original version by Ralph Stanley is fucking badass too.
