Keeping with the instrumental sections/tunes here's a tune I was madly in love with back around 98-99, I still like it.

DJ Shadow - Organ Donor

My favourite bit is at around 3 minutes in when the organ lines go crazy and the scratching starts.  So unbelievably awesome!

but you still appreciate his beats for common, tribe, pharcyde etc?

when i first listen to donuts i found it a little overwhelming.  too many ideas piled into just over 40 minutes (maybe he really knew he couldn't afford to take his time to fully develop everything), but repeated listens helped me appreciate it a lot more.

Of course. But a lot of beats simply aren't enjoyable without rap over the top of them. Like I said, though, I haven't tried Donuts much.

This weekend I bought again this bad boy:

Slayer: Seasons in the Abyss. 1990. Def Jam Records.

Even though Reign in Blood is a much more aggressive, seminal, in your face, and brutal record, this one is my personal favorite, and quite possibly one of the greatest metal albums ever.

A wide range of themes that deal with war, serial killings, drug wars, and the occult. All of them dominated by Dave Lombardo's awe-inspiring drumming. Seriously, this guy is way up there with Gene fucking Hoglan on my top three metal drummers ever. Lars who? LMAO.

used to really like that in my early teens.  i have reign in blood, south of heaven and seasons in the abyss in one of my boxes full of cds up in storage.

saw them live once in london years later, for old time's sake.  i appreciated the musicianship (especially the hanneman - king partnership) but i could not really enjoy the music by then.

^Not sure if that is in Eternal Sonata, a lot of Chopin's work is very similar.  That was one of the best things about that game though.  They would have these interludes with contempory photo's of the places he would have been when he was alive.

Coincidentally I discovered recently it wasn't Chopin I hated but bad interpritation of Chopin.

This almost guarantees that the music in Eternal Sonata is going to be horrible and ruin the game. Sad

Wailing Souls - Jah Give Us Life to Live (12" mix)

Junior Delgado - Sons of Slaves

Have you been exposed to Medeski, Martin and Wood?  may be a bit too organic for you, but it is organ heavy.

that's a pretty great recommendation, thanks.  i listened to a couple of things on youtube and it sounds very good to me.  the basslines are big, drumming is tight and the keys are nice and warm.  will try listening to a whole album next.  which do you think is a good one to begin with?

they remind me a little of fun lovin criminals (without the poncy vocals)

I'd go with Shack Man. It has their best song on it - Bubblehouse.

OK, i actually hate this song.  it's not punk, it's not anything.  cheesy 70ies pop.  but suda loves it and he named his game after it (after the bastards stopped him from simply calling it "heroes" which i will always think of as the real title) and i love the game.  So

The Stranglers - No More Heroes

Watch them not-play it and lip-sync it live on TOTP.  yay!

edit:  ok i feel bad i admit it.  the stranglers weren't utterly shite.  golden brown is an excellent pop tune.

Proof

i love the sound of the harpsichord (if that's what it is).

Lars from Metallica is really nothing special as a drummer. Almost every band I listen to has a better drummer honestly. He used to come up with some interesting beats in the 80's, especially on Master of Puppets and Justice For All...but even then he was outclassed by many. Really, you take each guy from Metallica individually, and the only one who stands out as being great at what he does "or what he used to do" is James Hetfield and his great Rhythm guitar work. But then you have guys like Dimebag from Pantera or Gary Holt from Exodus who are great at rhythm and solo playing.

Anyway, Seasons is great shit, though I liked South Of Heaven more. The drumming is insane on that CD.

I just picked up the new EXODUS which came out today!!! Its called Exhibit B: Human Condition, and so far I'd say its pretty fucking good but I've only heard half of it. Still, these guys continue to embarass most other thrash metal bands as they have for 20 years.
