What was the last game I put Undertale?

hmm aight long post

5. Beat Cibelle - 2/10

It was certainly unique, there was this odd framerate thing the game did, which Phil said might just be the game not having less frames or wathever, the point is my fraps counter was going all over the board, shit was irritating while you doing the MMO sim part. Otherwise I found the characters socially awkward, I found that Blake guy at times really ...he was very much the nerd voice me and Aljosa roll with at times lol, but yeah it also puts a nice light on that stuff. The nature of internet relationships and that jazz, Cib's dad sounded like a G, but overall it was unique and different.

But I didn't really get anything meaningful out of the plot, other than yeah some people are awkward, have anxiety, self esteem issues, all that jazz, I get that. I don't know, I think it's the only twine game I've ever played and beaten, but I don't actually know what twine game even means other than Austin Walker calling this game a Twine Game.

6. Beat X-Com Enemy Within - 8/10

RIP in peace my fallen comrades

-Yu Suzuki

-Jackie Chan

-Raven Symone

-Michael Jordan

-Kieth David

-Barry McFart

-Koolaidria Chickensprinkle

Love my team, Idris Elba, Sarah Conner, and Sabrina The Teenage Witch repping my mec army of destruction, Usain Hardcore Bolt, what a beast. Truest of my MVPs. Kim Checkmate Possible clutch on the sniper. Even got decent help from Aljosa The Demon (I didn't give him the nickname I let the game take care of that lol) Klujik who infiltrated the exalt bases for me it was rad.

I like the additions Enemy Within added over Enemy Unknown, Meld adds a sense of urgency to combat that isn't there. A base defense mission, and the exalt stuff was fun. It's not quite up to snuff with UFO Defense and its sequels, but for a streamlined take on that formula it's a damn good strategy game. On depth alone it could have suplanted Valkyria Chronicles for my favorite turn based strategy game of that previous gen, but Valkyria had variety in spades, Xcom is a little repetitive, and some of the bugs in the game are beyond infuriating.

7. Beat Bully Scholarship Edition - 5/10

I like the novelty of Bully as it is so different from what I would have associated with a Rockstar game, and the more modest production of Bully (not in comparison to stuff that came after alone, even GTA games of that era were more robust) gives Bully a bit of a different vibe, even if the gameplay is very much Rockstar.

The satire has its moments and I was pretty ballin in all my classes, Gagan got nothing but good grades #MaxNerd

Where the game loses me is very much in the way Rockstars games play and how Rockstars games were back then: A lot of the early stretch is doing a variety of different missions, but a lot of them is more or less a tutorial for a mechanic or side activity you can do, and the general mechanics themselves are never particularly fluid or sound. Plus a few of the stealth missions were straight tedious, the jokes eventually began to hit less (the final third of the game I stopped paying attention), and well part of that could be is that I've had the benefit of watching Rockstar to go do bigger and better things since. Who knows.

On some level I do dig the game, and I've told Phil I'm very much on board with him in his desire to see Rockstar make Bully 2: Mean Girls. Do it Rocksar.

8. Beat Firewatch - 6/10

So Firewatch is a new one of these walk n talk adventure games in the mold of a gone home or everyone's gone to rapture or whatever, and for a 3.5-4 hour game I dug a lot of it, right up until the ending let me down. The banter between Henry and Delilah is great, it feels natural, the only time I cringe is during their flirting and even that works a bit for me, the ambiance is there, if you turn the map marker off you end up using the map and compass like an actual map and compass in a setting where it can feel like you can be lost for a sec.

It's a cool touch if you're in the mood to try playing a game that way, otherwise I feel like you'll just go through one glorified corridor to another. Parlor trick and all. I also felt that the actual build up of the mystery side of Firewatch was well done. Where the game completely loses me is that under no circumstance is that ending satisfying. Where the characters end up didn't really feel fulfilling, and the payoff for the mystery thing was both predictable and unsatisfying all at once. It honestly felt like there needed to be more story or more meat to the story just to tie it all together, because I left the experience going "that's it? that's it?" at the end, which is a shame because I did end up digging Henry and Delilah.

Delilah's pun game is on point. Early character of the year fam.

9.Beat Grim Fandango. 8/10

Year 3 is not good, not because there is some logic breaking bullshit puzzle, though I wasn't too fond of that door locking puzzle, as I forgot to use the sythe for the longest time. But in general Year 2 is great because of all the cool characters Lola, Glotis and his gambling, Olivia, Toto, Lupe, etc that place just has a lot of personality, and it highlights in how many different ways Manny isn't a bumbling idiot, he is a clever, relatively suave dude.

Year 3 you bumble your way to the bottom of the sea, you get Meche who is legit, but the other 2 additions of that run the angels and the little water robot dude just aren't interesting. And doing a lot of the work in part of the game, makes the gameplay feel like you bring the plot to a screeching halt, right when you find Meche.

Year 4 doesn't completely reach the heights of Year 2 again, but it ends up being a nice closer in spite of going back. The sequence of events makes a level of sense both puzzle wise and plot wise, and the finish with Hector felt appropriate for the game. It's a bit slap dash and half baked.

Ultimately I still really like the game because the characters are great, most of the script is legit clever, and the gameplay losing steam in the second half does hurt its cause, but I still dig it. The film noir vibe, the Day of the Dead backdrop, and just honestly the fact that they made a point n click adventure game without overdoing the combine items routine, and my inventory never got bloated. Which a lot of adventure games, including Schafer's have made the mistake of doing.

As a "play" genre it was never the most elegant genre, but I've always enjoyed going back to this genre for its more diverse and original plots in this medium, and that's something Grim Fandango still is in spades.

10. Beat Crimson Dragon - 3/10

So I remember having a blast with Panzer Dragoon Orta, and from my understanding the dude behind that franchise was the one directing this game. Now I know the metascore for the game was trash, but it was one of the GWG games, and fuck it, how bad could it really be? (mistake).

Man the camera and controls while not broken, are definitely not fluid or precise which is really odd, because it's not like these games don't have their moments where the camera can get lost in the action. But, fuck this was just maddening at times, the rpg grind at times is a bit overkill, there is no sense of variation between the environments, and while it's not a long game, Panzer Dragoon Orta while also being a short game had way the fuck more going on.

There are some cool ideas in this game, you can hire other peoples dragons to come be your wingman, but I guess nowadays its broken, because I just kept hiring this beast wingman dragon that just rekt fools for me, so it's not even gratifying the way that Xbox game was.

You know how there are two type of people when it comes to that PS3 game Lair, where there are the people who only know it as that broken game with the bullshit sixaxis controls, and then there are the people who played that game post patch and would tell you its aight. Crimson Dragon is what the former think Lair is, it's sloppy, it completely undermines what should be a fun fucking concept, its visually unappealing. It's not just that the textures are muddy and all that jazz, but the art direction is like this dirty contrast. Not regular contrast, dirty contrast.

It's kind of like how a broken game never quite gets rid of that stench of being broken once, the game never quite rids itself of the stench that it was a Kinect game turned gamepad game for the Xbox One launch window.

Oh well it's a 10th game.

You know, I just realized that we're almost into March and I've yet to complete a single game. I've become that guy.

Don't be like THIS me.

You need to play something short and sweet just to break the 2016 cherry.

Can you help me break my 2016 cherry too?

Stone cold classic. Really glad you dug it. It's funny that Broken Age is more backwards and antiquated in many ways than Grim Fandango is...

Given that you and I both love to be very specific with our semantics, I'm down with classic, but not stone cold.

It is really fucking good, great even. Year 3 is really boring man, but man Schafer was a beast back then with this and Monkey Island.

Hey, classic from you in this context is more than I was expecting anyway.

I don't hate on point n click adventure games, I merely point out that they have shitty puzzles and usually waste the players time with pixel hunt bullshit. I think that's a fair criticism.

I don't mean to imply you do. You're actually more fair to them than a lot of the dudes on EB (especially some that then play utterly shitty new ones and praise them, ahem). Shitty puzzle part I think isn't true as often as the stereotype suggests (but is still often true, if that makes sense), but fuck pixel hunting.

11. Beat Broforce - 7/10

The first half of this game I really dug, it brings me back to the glory days of Contra and Metal Slug, and I kind of wish I played broop, playing it solo probably does the game a disservice. But it's a lot better than just run forward and blow shit up, a lot of the bros have cool abilities that go nicely, when the game is coming up with fun boss sequences it's an absolute delight, and fuck it if I don't like going from Robocop to Blade to fucking Commando lol. That and the whole you can shoot and dig your way out of levels is really clever, as some of the rougher stretches actually required me to instead of deal with the enemies head on, use my environment to my advantage.

I bet that shit is great on the higher difficulties.

But that 2nd half is where I just got annoyed, for starters Aliens, yes as in the movie, but also as in it does the video game thing where the 2nd half is going to have an enemy type you haven't dealt with, and the aliens aren't as fun to fight. For starters they make certain bros feel kind of useless, Blade was a beast and then became a liability to me around this stretch. Some of the checkpointing was sloppy, because early on the game didn't make this mistake, but later on sometimes you would get a checkpoint before one of its pan out cutscenes, especially for the boss, especially for one of the final bosses, that's lame. They recyle this one boss type in the 2nd half, that ends up being the final boss (albeit a better done version of those), and the parts where the game tries to be like Super Meat Boy suck. Super Meat Boy has excellent controls, this they are good for an action platformer, but for the stuff Meat Boy does? FUCK NO.

Utlimately the 2nd half kind of soured me on some things, but all in all it was a good little action game. It doesn't quite feel as creative as Super Time Force, and it's probably longer than it should be (and it's a 4 hour game lol, it'll just be longer once the difficulty spikes hit), but there is a tightness to it that is really enjoyable. Plus when a level is just dudes dying and exploding, it is glorious.

12. Beat Superhot - 7/10

It's a badass simulator, and no I never got tired of the "SUPER HOT, SUPER HOT, SUPER HOT" could listen to that shit all day lol. The game needs to be longer, or at least endless mode needs way more maps. The story ends when it should, but the mechanics I feel could have been explored a bit more, or maybe another mechanic or two added to the gameplay loop? I don't know, but while Broforce dragged, Superhot makes me want more.

Fuck a community map maker? FFFFFFF would be down.

Either way because of the challenges and endless mode, I don't see me uninstalling the game anytime soon. It's like the perfect game to play when I want to play a game, but don't want to play any of the games I'm supposed to be working on to beat.

Updated with Yakuza: Dead Souls.

This game was a trip....I really didn't know what to expect from it. What I got was a game with the Yakuza vibe but in the style of Dead Rising and Resident Evil. Really humorous shit goes on constantly in this one too...Majima is the man! So much Resident Evil love in this game. Really enjoyed it. Now I'm finally ready for Yakuza 5, whenever I get around to it.

Eat shit and die General RAAM!!! I beat your ass on Insane difficulty, again. Man there are some really frustrating parts playing Gears of War UE on Insane thanks to some really stupid AI companion behaviour. Still and excellent game overall and they did a good job upgrading it.

I love you Metroid.

I tried playing this game twice when I bought it on the Wii Virtual Console.  Both times I got stuck at that place with all the spikes.  I kept thinking you have to use the ice beam to freeze the bugs and use them as platforms but they're too few and too far between and I thought it can't be that hard there must be something I'm not doing right.  So I sort of gave up.  Sad

When in doubt cheat man, this is the era of gamefaqs and youtube.

If it's the room where the entire floor is spikes, you need the grappling hook. The bugs can be frozen to give yourself something to grab if you're not comfortable with the swinging in that game. There is another room you can take and skip the grappling hook for a bit, but you need to be legit at your wall jumping, which I'll go out on a limb and say you'll struggle with.

Yes, it was that room.  Perhaps I was trying to do it before I had the grappling hook.  I can't remember.  I was trying to just freeze the bugs and use them as platforms but it seemed like it was too challenging a feat to be required so I thought perhaps I was meant to go somewhere else first but I couldn't find where.

Just finished Mega Man 2, such a great game. Out of the Mega Man's 1 through 10 this one is my favourite. Excellent music, cool stages and bosses, and just the right amount of difficulty.

I just finished Gears Of War Judgement.

Very fun game....I like how they added some actual COLOR to the world. Its been a long time since I played the other games, so its hard to say where this one fits. But I'd say its right up there wiith the others in terms of overall quality. 8.2 Rating.
