30 years ago what I consider to be the most important video game of all time came out, Super Mario Bros. It is the game that saved the console industry. It is the game that revolutionized game design. it inspired an entire generation of lifelong gamers, the reason so many of my age group are lifelong gamers is because of super Mario bros. For the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. Nintendo is giving us the keys to the kingdom. Mario Maker is not just a mario level editor, it is a celebration of the most famous gaming franchise. The base game has over 60 levels to mess around with but the majority of content will come from the community. this is basically the 2D mario to end all 2D Mario, the gift of never ending Mario. Of course with every game with user level the key becomes how good is the game in making sure the best levels get noticed. It seems nintendo has a good system is in place but we shall see how it all works when it goes live. I will try to make my own levels. I will try to showcase the best ones here.

Somebody, somewhere will make the most badass 2D Mario experiences.  I really would love to try this out.  Perhaps in a couple months.

This is going to be so awesome playing around and making stuff with all these Mario assets. It's like a dream come true for me.

Super Mario World was the most important game of my childhood and simply being able to play endless levels in its style will make me very happy. I find it hard to buy this game though, it's in the hands of the community as to how the levels pan out. And honestly I want Nintendo to introduce new things, new assets and to have an update program like Splatoon constantly adding new elements. There doesn't seem to be any sort of plan like that in place.

And seeing the artists on Miiverse, they could have opened up pixel art or the ability to create your own assets/sprites and add properties to them. I would to see a top down LTTP style Zelda creator.

I too find it hard to buy this.  I can't see myself finding a lot of enjoyment from making sub-par stages.  Generally, when a game has a level creator, I'll make a level or 2-3 and then just never come back to it.

That was my boom blox experience but here at least the touchscreen will make it intuitive and fun.

Part of me feels like this shouldn't be sold as a full price game, it should be an eshop app at a third of the price. WhatI mostly want from any  new 2D mario is a new artstyle. (New) SMB art is craptastic. We used to get a new artstyle with every new mario and you could see the difference. Now NSMB is used for everything. There are some amazing artists out there who have done mario artwork, surely the devs at Nintendo could be braver?

Agree that it's not a good thing that there have been 4 "New" sidescrawling Super Mario games all with the same art style.  Especially as they are on four different platforms.  For comparison the three NES Super Mario Games all have a very distinctive art style.

I am looking forward to Mario Maker but I agree that it feels a little too limited and bare bones.  More options and more freedom would have made a huge difference and given it great longevity I think.  As it is, I don't see it having legs for very long.  Unless of course they keep adding stuff as free DLC.

I'm sure zavvi will have it back in stock very shortly.  I think the standard edition still comes with the art book if I'm not mistaken

Too broke at the moment to pick it up. Maybe in a couple weeks. I definitely want it though. As a kid who didn't dream of making their own levels of SMB?

I'm concerned I might not get to play it though. My son is a damned Minecraft and LBP junkie. If he gets a hold of this I might lose access to my Wii U.

Don't think of it as losing your WiiU.  Think of it as a first step towards redemption of your son's soul.

I just started, the tutorial is brilliant. The in game manual is brilliant. No one does it better than nintendo, they know how to make everything user friendly and easy to use.

I'm  trying to figure out how the music blocks work. I want to have Thwomps land on them to create music but I not sure which height the blocks have to be to create which music note.

SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:

  • SMB Mix-Up! (1AB2-0000-0047-5A7D)
  • Storm the Castle (77BD-0000-00E0-A9C0)

Wow so much to talk about here. The intro and tutorial is brilliant, pure nintendo brilliance. They have a way of explaining things and making even the most mundane thing fun. With seconds you are messing with the super easy to understand editor. They get the message across that anyone can make a level. The in game manual is even fun to mess around with, it's got videos, secrets, developer notes that explain level design to others. It's almost like a behind the scenes on the making of the game at times.

Then you get to play the pre made levels in the 10 lives challenge and these serve as not only fun levels but ideas for your levels. What blew my mind was switching through all the mario games. The look, the music! It's like a mario museum. I was in heaven... Then I went to the user levels and I found hell.

These levels suck sweaty mario balls. You will be swimming through a sea of absolute dog shit to find something that is decent. The 100 mario challenge gives you 100 lives to get through 8 random user levels. This is like a box of shit chocolates, you never know what you are going to get, but almost all the time it will be shit. There are of course the torture levels, where the creator finds it funny to put hidden blocks exactly where you jump so you fall back down and die.

So there are rankings , I haven't tried most of the highest rated yet. I went to gaf and played some of their levels, the level of quality went up tremendously. I played stuff that was fun and had level design that was somewhat normal. One was a cool puzzle. One was a sonic level, the sonic mario has all the sonic sound effects, it's awesome.

I then decided to make my own level. I only have access to very few tools ( there is no patch yet) so I made something basic on SMB1. Like all SMB1 level it rewards you for speeding through it. So if you run it is possible to basically run and jump non stop, which makes it far easier. I made sure the run path, which involves jumping turtles is as viable as slowly navigatimg the level. This took me less than 30 minutes. The level editor is ridiculously easy, blows LBP out of the water in terms of ease of access.

But that is part of the problem, because it is so easy to make a level you get a million quickly made levels out there. LBP is like going to a fancy restaurant and getting a top sirloin, top levels are masterfully crafted, giant works of art. Mario Maker is like eating from the dollar menu at Wendy's, everything is super short, there is no real artistic expression. It's just a steady stream of minute long mario levels injected right into your veins. Without levels being tied together with a hub world or checkpoints these levels feel pointless. There is no flow, no progression, it's just a mess. Nintendo has some work to do.

My first level, just threw it together. Like any SMB level if you speed through it you will find you can do it all without ever stopping, I made sure of it. Use the turtles.

Or you may just get an infinite supply of awesome levels created there at your own home!  And the boy will become a legendary Mario level designer!

I thought there was some rating system so you can choose to play the highest rated?
