22. Beat Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - 9/10

It's a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. I love it, start to finish, the music is amazing, the stealth gameplay is easier than MGS2, but it's easier with more room to experiment and dick around against the enemies. So many stretches of uninterrupted gameplay after how annoying MGS1 and 2 can get about it. Don't get me wrong the dialogue and writing is still redundant, overkill, and stupid, but I love the crew you're with, Big Boss being more dialed back helps their cause, The Boss is awesome, the 60s spy references are dope, and fuck that ending : (

Going back some of the bosses are still lame like The Fear, I am still of the opinion that The End not being able to kill you and not doing damage to you hurts that fight. Him attacking your stamina bar gives the player so much room for error, where as having him be an actual threat would have been more of an intense fight. As it was I just thought it was long, and I sort of knew way too many of the tricks for the boss fight considering it wasn't my first time. Even on Hard (because I wasn't in the mood for extreme right off the bat) he shows up on the map after he shoots, you really have to fuck up for him to sneak up on you. It's a good boss fight, it's a cool sniper fight, fuck one might argue it's the only actual sniper fight in any video game.

I just don't think it's all that great of a fight. The Boss I really like, even if you can cheese it, the core thing you're supposed to do during the fight is a bit weak. I would have preferred that fight being the one where the cure stuff didn't come into play, because one punch from her was cure town, and that made it more annoying than it needed to be. Otherwise I still like The Fury as a fight, Ocelot's first fight is a good opening boss, Shagahod and Volgan are fun enough, albeit underwhelming in the grand scheme of Metal Gear's theater.

Beyond that I was better at CQC this time, that was fun to use. I explored more of the areas and discovered all these other paths through areas that I never did back when I played the game, I actually think the Subsitence camera really made it an extremely well playing game. Other than some core enemies being "spungy" if you don't shoot for the face, I think the action/stealth gameplay is top notch. I ran around shotgunning people at times ^_^

And purely gameplay sequences, I don't think there was anything that matches the fucking lows of MGS1/2 or 4, or Revengeance, they are lows that are I can accept in the grand scheme of the game...I really didn't dislike a single stretch of gameplay. The Fear is a boring boss fight, but it's functional and I wrecked him pretty quickly, ditto with the pain. Plus I would imagine the first time by not knowing the trick would have made those sequences more interesting. So yeah, Snake Eater is a beast of an experience. Love it.

It's the absolute best Metal Gear game.  Big Boss' story is much more interesting than Solid Snake's. That's one thing that excites me about TPP, it's Big Boss' story.

The game was amazing, especially considering what they did on the PS2. But I will never understand how they had to release the game TWICE to get it right. They should have never released it in 2004 with that camera system. Of course if this was released after the PS360 era began they could have just fixed it with an update instead of an entire re-release.

For all the grousing I like to do and hear about the way forward for games (no consoles, all-digital, "why would you ever want a console again wark-wark-wark"), this one is clear-cut. Then again, it would've taken five years and removed something else from the disc if MGS4's update was any indication. Nyaa

His plot potential? Eh sure, I guess the idea of watching him go from "Snake" to Big Boss is inherently fascinating, especially with the gut punch of The Boss, but I don't subscribe to the theory he's a better character than Snake. While a lot of Boss's behavior in 3 is intentional as he's meant to be more responsive and dialed back, he doesn't nearly have the bravado and personality of Solid Snake. MGS1's Snake to me is still a way more enjoyable protagonist, and if MGS4 wasn't a poorly written shit show, I think there were great ideas Kojima could have come up with for Old Snake.

But that's neither here nor there, by the way guys just started MGS4 again, ugh....fuck this game.

23. Beat Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - 7/10

Fuck Metal Gear Solid 4. I skipped every cutscene because there was no way in hell I would subject myself to that nonsense ever again.

I just beat Legacy Of Kain: Defiance!

Pretty crazy to think that as big of a Kain fan as I always have been, I never bothered with this game until recently. Back in 2003, I wasn't happy that it looked like they were following the trend of Devil May Cry style action games, and leaving the Zelda style exploration behind. That's why I never bothered with the game. But, while the game does indeed have much more DMC style combat than past games, it still feels, looks, and has the great story of, a Kain title. I do wish I had picked it up 12 years ago, but better late than never.

They did dumb down the exploration and puzzle elements in this game, which I don't like. And what is there is very repetitive. Its like the puzzle elements are just filler to move the game to the next action set, and advance the story. I do wish they had put more care into the areas that made Blood Omen and Soul Reaver so amazing. Then this game would have been a total classic. As it is, it feels like a game pulled in two different directions and doesn't nail either one. But as I said, its still an enjoyable game....I'd put it about equal with Blood Omen 2. Very different games, but in terms of overall quality, they both fall about the same place, behind the first three games in the series.

I had always assumed this game closed out the story and that was why they never continued the series...but to my surprise, that's not the case. They left it WIDE OPEN for a sequel. The fuck Crystal Dynamics....take that Tomb Raider engine and put it to some use!

7.4 rating.

I skipped every cutscene.

The first 2 acts of MGS4 build on MGS3's camo stealth pretty nicely, having the active camo automatically turn into your environment is a cool visual trick and cuts out the menu navigation that takes up a lot of playing MGS3. The opening 2 areas play like nice pocket sandboxes, where there is a lot of space to work even though you are going from point A to point B, there are a lot of alley ways, nooks and crannies, vents, shacks, diversions along the way. The combat itself is the most enjoyable it has ever been in the series (Until MGSV) as it does a lot of the things i like about TLOUS's shooting, namely the being able to break line of sight, but you also have this giant arsenal of weapons to work with as well so it gives you a lot to fuck with your enemies. Plus distance shooting requires a bit more finesse, unless you're using a sniper.

That Rex v Ray part? FUCK YES

That final boss fight? couldn't be more hype

That crying wolf fight? I prefer sniping in the middle of a blizzard vs the jungle stuff with The End, especially since Crying Wolf is an actual threat to you as a player.

Everything else is a mixture of fuck ups, having a shop to buy some cool guns n stuff? Cool, having it be in the fucking pause menu so stealth even on hard becomes a joke because I have tranq ammo for days? Not cool.

The Raging Raven fight sucks. If you fight her on the perimeter she's too spongy to take down that way, so the ideal thing is wait on the bottom floor until she shows up and then unload on her. That's dumb.

Screaming Mantis was corny. Shoot a doll and then you throw her around, it's corny.

Vamp fight sucks. Besides the trick being the siringe thing, who in the fuck decided that what I want to do is shoot geckos, while I watch raiden and him fight on the side? Get the fuck out, Raiden is shit, like I want to watch him kill a boss

Shadow Moses is actually a pretty banal part of the game, because when you get over the fan service part of it you are sneaking against far more robotic and dumber AI that isn't nearly as engaging to fuck with. In fact fighting geckos in that game is inherently not satisfying. They take a shit load of ammo, and require the obnoxious shoot them in the leg, and strafe around and shoot in back technique. Plus at one point I had to wait for Otacon to open a fucking door, fuck that.

The 3 to 1 cutscene to gameplay ratio? Fuck that

The entire plot revolving around nanomachines? Fuck that

The part where Naomi dies and the game wants me to feel sympathetic to Vamp who in this entire franchise has been as deplorable as you can get? Fuck that

Fucking Otacon being the little bitch that he is? Fuck that

Naomi? Fuck That

The part where MGS4 makes it so that the entire cast of MGS3 go on to become this awful, unlikable pieces of shit, even para-medic who is essentially responsible for what happens to Grayfox? FUCK THAT

The part where The entire dialogue exchange with Eve is one obnoxious in your face biblical reference like this is a Bungie game with a gravemind segment? Fuck that.

The part where Ocelot tricked himself into having the oscar winning performance of the lifetime to be Liquid snake to help snake beat the Patriots system by trying to kill him? Fuck that.

The meryl and johnny stuff? Fuck that.

The tailing mission in Act 3? Fuck that

The on rails motorocycle shooting segment that is too busy being cinematic and not being enjoyable? Fuck that.

Rose being back in the game? Fuck that

Everything Raiden does in this game? Fuck that

The part where after you kill the beauty and the beast bosses, Drebin does this long winded fucking explaination for their name which all amounts to "Their village/people/family/friends got raped/murdered, and then said child went insane and killed things while laughing , raging, crying, or screaming"? Fuck that.

The part where Snake is old? Fuck that

The part where Big Boss shows up at the end, and apparently was in a coma until Naomi woke him up because yolo? Fuck that.

The part where Big Boss apparently snuck Zero out of a nursing home and took him on a bus to a fucking graveyard, only to then kill him in front of Snake? Fuck that.

The part where the noteworthy final death at the game with the character getting his peace isn't Snake, but shitty ass Big Boss? Fuck that.

Too long; didn't read: Metal Gear Solid 4 is a good game if you skip all the cutscenes and act like that piece of shit story doesn't exist. It entirely peaks 2 acts in, and it's all downhill from there gameplay wise minus a few highlights (Rex/Ray and the final boss), but all in all it is an enjoyable action/stealth game in terms of how it plays. However it's one thing that video game stories suck, it's one thing that kojima's writing has always been shit, it is one thing that Metal Gear has always been ridiculous, but the supreme hours of intrusive bullshit that is MGS4 just so he can appease a fanbase that never should have took MGS that seriously in the first fucking place, and in 2 thousand and mother fucking 8 I bought that PS3 specifically because I needed to play the latest Metal Gear? FUCK THAT in every hole humanly possible, mouth, asshole, ear, eye socket, whatever. Fuck it every which way, because it deserves nothing but sheer vitriol for its bullshit.

Fuck Metal Gear Solid 4.
