Just got up to Hippo...

...I must be getting old. I can't seem to get any stars.

I know you have to hit them when and where they least expect it to get them...

...but my 1987 gaming skills left me 22 years ago!

I'm just dodging and hitting, dodging and hitting.

It absolutely is THE very definition of A PERFECT, PICK UP AND PLAY, ARCADE, SKILL-BASED, FUN game though. Always has been, always will be!

Who would have thought, 25 years ago, when I would see this in the arcade and be AWED by it, I would be playing a FAAAR SUPERIOR, MOTION-CONTROLLED version of it in the comforts of my own home!

Awesome memories indeed. I used to hang around for hours with two of my friends at the arcade playing only this game.

This game has challenges that make you want to replay the fighters over and over again.  For example, you have to knock out Von Kaiser with just five punches, or find five ways to get a star. Knock down Glass Joe three times and the let HIM win. So cool.  This will be played for a very long time. What was the final "secret"? Where's online? Sad

One more thing worth mentioning - Doc finally gives some decent advice!  It's not just "uppercut him when he's stunned" or "join the Nintendo Fun Club today."  His tips actually helped me stay competitive with Aran Ryan and showed me how to get a star out of Don Flamenco.

Not too me.  Punches seem to connect and it doesn't feel like you're just swinging a remote around to your arms get tired.  You can always use the old school controls.

There's a couple things I've discovered that I didn't see mentioned in the reviews.  Not sure if any of these would qualify as the big surprise but who knows.

1.  Unlockable headgear to make Mac more durable in the ring.

2.  "Man'ing up" - During a fight with Soda Popinski he knocked me down for what should have been the third time, but as Mac was falling backwards he shook off the punch and got some energy back (really wish I knew what the hell I did there).

3.  Mac's Last Stand Mode - This mode is available available after you've done your full title defense.  You basically go through everyone one more time and you can only lose 3 times before you are forced out of it. Plus once you're fighting you can't stop mid-match.  You cannot pause the game in this mode.  Very likely there's something special at the end of this. .  . like Donkey Kong.

I was in the GS forums and someone ruined the big surprise.  It's kind of.....shitty.'

I made it to Don Flamenco and he is so much tougher than the original.  The challenge is near perfect in this game, it slowly increases but not to impossible levels.

Finally made it to Sandman this evening.  This son of a bitch is relentless.  No surprise there I suppose, but man oh man is he one mean bastard.

I took a break after a few losses and did the Glass Joe challenges.  Unfortunately that didn't do a damn thing to make the next rematches any easier.

Looking forward to facing him again.  I'm looking foward to all of them. Nyaa

Finally finished up with Sandman.  Took me literally 20 matches before I finally beat him.  He's a tough bastard.  But not as tough as the new and improved Glass Joe!!

This title defense mode is going to be nasty.  Totally looking forward to it.

I just finished Don Flamenco.  It took five tries before I could beat him and my record is destroyed. Nyaa   Now is when the similarities to the old Punchout games end.  You need completely different strategies to finish these guys and they can be pretty tough.

Just read what Robio had to say about Sandman and it sounds exciting.  If you guys who played the original over an over again are worried about a challenge, don't be.  It ramps up after King Hippo, but not enough to make it so frustrating that you bite your controller.  I'm having a hard time finding a flaw. Maybe that there is no online play, but besides that, nada.

That was pretty much my thoughts on the matter.  I'd been playing the NES Punchout for weeks in preparation for this and I thought I'd breeze through it.  Nope.  There are certainly similarities between the old boxers and their updated counterparts but don't count on any of the other strategies.  They have a large variety of punches now, and every time you knock them down they'll break out a new surprise for you that you'll have to contend with.

As far as title defense mode goes it's really good.  Amazing how much fun it is.  All of the boxers have fairly dramatic changes.  It's not just "Glass Joe with Headgear."  They have new defenses, new punches, and in most cases new attitudes.  Von Kaiser has pretty much gone insane and is pretty funny now.  But make no mistake about it, it's harder than hell.  I've spent almost as much time in title defense mode now as I did in the first mode - but I've yet to get out of the minor circuit.  I'm currently fighting King Hippo and getting my butt handed to me.
