Dvader said:The "Its not a TRUE game in the series" nonsense.
It's not nonsense. It's the truth! Truth, I say!
Dvader said:Just now Steel decided to claim that all Castlevania's that are Metroid like are side-games, yeah NO.
Yeah, YES!
Dvader said:
Just cause they look different and feel different doesn't mean its a side game.
Yes, it does.
Dvader said:Resident Evil 4 changes the series completely and saved the franchise in the process. That is the current style of Resident Evil now, it evolved, its not a side game, its a new kind of RE.
I enjoyed RE4, but it's a side game.
Dvader said:Castlevania Symphony of the Night evolved the series, it took Castlevania in a new direction (a much better direction).
De-evolved; worse direction. This isn't opinion. This is fact.

This kind of CV has been so successful that odds are when you think of CV you now think of this kind of CV first before the old kind.
With kids maybe, those that haven't experianced the sheer epic awesomeness of the classic arcade-style CV games.

A franchise is not what you want it to be, you cant pick and choose which games are true versions and which aren't.
Yes, we can. Arcade CVs are the only TRUE CV games. See? I just did it.
Dvader said:I don't like the Zelda DS games that much, but they are Zelda games, I have no say in the matter, they are real Zelda games. The point is franchises change, deal with it.
No, they are not, and I refuse to accept it!
I'm not in complete disagreement with what Vader says here, but to me classic, proper CV titles are linear stage based action platformers, with no backtracking or customizing.
I'll believe one of the Metroidvanias is a true entry when it's labeled as Castlevania V, instead of some pompous subtitle.
I'm not saying I hold the truth, but it is what it is for me, so...
... then i'm afraid i only like the not true entries of Resident Evil, and the not true entries of Castlevania.
Woe is me

Like I said before, it is what it is to me. Most everyone else can (and will) continue to consider Metroidvanias the flagship titles of the franchise. It's just my twisted perception and nostalgia over a gameplay style that is long gone, and that suited perfectly the pre-SotN games.
I never mentioned the RE titles, and I honestly don't care about them enough to worry about true or not true entries.
Ravenprose said:^ Twisted perception and nostalgia . . .a gameplay style that is long gone?! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
You and me, hamster, aren't so different, after all.
bugsonglass said:fair enough. to be honest i don't look too deeply into the semantics of what a particular game is or isn't considered. I played and thoroughly enjoyed all three of the GBA games and all three of the DS games. I tried Super Castlevania IV on the virtual console but i couldn't get into it in the same way. And Dracula X on the psp was a big disappointment. It's just good to be sure at this stage to have a good idea of the kind of Castlevania game I like, and the kind I don't and that's what's more important
Completely agreed.

Most epic deal with it ever.

Ok but I think you are kind of doing the whole its slightly different therefore its not a true game thing. Sunshine was a major entry into the series, I don't see how Sunshine is not part of the main series, it is. The portable games are always tricky but I feel they should fit.

Masterpiece!
Franchises change, franchises evolve and it is not up to us the player to determine what is a true game in the series is. I am not talking about obvious side games, clearly if the game has nothing to do with the usual gameplay of the series and is clearly being done as an outside project than it could be considered a side game. For instance Metroid Pinball, no one in their right mind thinks of Metroid Pinball as a true Metroid game.
I am talking about real entries into the series stuff like Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4 and all the Metroidvanias. Just cause they look different and feel different doesn't mean its a side game. If a series does not change and stagnates it starts to get worse. Sometimes drastic changes are needed. Resident Evil 4 changes the series completely and saved the franchise in the process. That is the current style of Resident Evil now, it evolved, its not a side game, its a new kind of RE.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night evolved the series, it took Castlevania in a new direction (a much better direction). This kind of CV has been so successful that odds are when you think of CV you now think of this kind of CV first before the old kind. This doesn't mean it can't go back to its roots, series can do that at any times, they are all branches of a big tree but they all belong to the same tree.
A franchise is not what you want it to be, you cant pick and choose which games are true versions and which aren't. I don't like the Zelda DS games that much, but they are Zelda games, I have no say in the matter, they are real Zelda games. The point is franchises change, deal with it.
