Happy new year everybody.

I have been playing Super Metroid over the last two or three weeks. As you may know I don't have time to devote to long continuous gaming sessions, so this is just kind of in dribs and drabs whenever I get the chance. Thankfully I have had four fairly long flights and much time sitting around in airports over the holiday period which allowed me to make some decent progress.

I'm still not altogether sure exactly what to make of this game. I never played it back when it was released as I didn't have a Super Nintendo. I was hugely excited to get to play it when it was released on the Wii virtual console in 2007, but I gave up on it shortly thereafter after getting stuck a few times (not long after starting the game). But it always remained as one of those games I felt I needed to experience since I carry a huge amount of reverence towards it for introducing so many innovations we have since taken for granted and for birthing quite possibly my favourite genre and the blueprint for so many of my favourite games of all time.

But all that aside, it is not an easy game for me to enjoy in this day and age. I don't like being stuck for hours not knowing where I need to go to make some progress, particularly since there is no warping or fast travelling this huge maze of a map, and there isn't even a way of recognizing on the map which pathways are accessible and which are deadends. Also, the move set/mechanics ... innovative as they are, are also not that great (perhaps since I'm going back to this games having already played much more refined versions of this or similar moveset/skillset. Some moves take one a long time to figure out, like the wall-jump. Some moves are outright broken, like the space-jump. This makes it confusing for me to know when I can't progress because I haven't picked up a skill/upgrade yet or because I can't figure out what I am meant to do or how to do it. It is usually not because I haven't got the relevant upgrade. I have used a guide once, to stop being stuck. Trying to stick with it and finish it this time but I am having a love/hate time with it.

I completed Layers of Fear 2.

It was alright in the end, reminds me of the first game in that it feels like a nothing burger then becomes better in the final 3rd.

I prefer the first games setting. I feel the story needs to be more explicit.

As a switch 1 game it's an excellent port, much better than the first game or Observer.
Observer is still the best Bloober game I played.

I prefer Zero mission to Super Metroid.

If they fixed the floaty jumping that would help.

I played Super Metroid for the first time during COVID I think, and I was also left with mixed feelings. It's a good game, but there's still plenty of obstacles that require more guessing than actual thought. At the end of the day, it was an 8 hour game, from the rental era, so that's to be expected to some degree. It's a milestone game, but it's definitely been surpassed over the last 30 years.

I picked up Super Metroid right after graduating from college. My family was gone on a trip so I got to chill at the house playing Super Metroid for days.

Do you even know how many times I've deleted and reinstalled Outlast?

I feel like that punished Titan who had to roll a rock up a hill for eternity.

I can't decide whether the game is scary by design, or just has some of the flat out worst game design I've ever seen.

This is a game that puts you in bad situations and here's the real problem, doesn't give you the mechanics or tools to make the game feel fair.

I'm lost outside in a storm trying to find a priest and I cant see more than 5ft in front of me. Every gate is locked and my battery is all run down.

They also purposely don't draw the environment far enough so even cranking up the brightness doesn't do shit.

This feels like the worst flu I've ever had. Day 5 and I'm still too sick to walk my dog. WTF

I don't know if it was the flu or a new strain of COVID, but I caught something in the middle of December, and I'm still not totally over it. Hope you get well soon, but if it what I had it might be a few more weeks.

I had to run out of the house to stop a parking attendant from driving off after sticking a parking fine on my car.

On a Sunday, in front of my own house. On a day where there are no parking restrictions.

The guy was proper Indian, as in literally just stepped off the plane and didn't understand what he was doing.

It was freezing outside. It was lucky I even saw it as my seat doesn't even face the window.

Been continuing my playthrough of Octopath Traveler 0 this weekend. Really good game but really long as well. Over the 100 hour mark now.

Most of my weekend was spent with Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Absolutely loving it. Going to try and wrap it up this week. Also played a little Once Upon a Katamari, though I was left a little underwhelmed. It's a big switch from Yakuza and I was just hitting the story's peak, so it probably wasn't fair to give it a go just yet.

Been playing Outlast.

Now I've learned I can run around like a headless chicken to avoid enemies it's easier.

Also been playing Paradise Lost, this walking sim where its 1960 and you're in this underground Nazi complex. The problem being the walking and running speed is glacial and the sound of footsteps is the worst audio I've ever heard for footsteps and is constantly annoying.

Also been continuing Ace Prosecutor 2, just finished the 2nd case. Suprised to learn their are 3 more episodes. Now playing as Edgeworth father 18 years in the past.

Next: The Legend of Zelda is said to offer inter-dimensional puzzles

02.01.26 - The next The Legend of Zelda is supposed to contain inter-dimensional puzzles. That's what Shpeshal Nick claims in the latest XboxEra podcast.

The development is said to build on the tech and design of The Legend of Zelda - Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda - Tears of the Kingdom, with improvements that take advantage of the extra power of the Switch 2. Players are supposed to solve puzzles by using physical interactions between different dimensions, such as moving liquids or activating objects to unlock doors or paths in other realities.

The concept is reminiscent of the classic light and shadow world duality of the series, but expands it with system-based and physics-driven mechanics. Many of the ideas are said to have originated as experiments during the development of Tears of the Kingdom and can now be implemented thanks to the more powerful hardware and the further developed engine. According to Shpeshal Nick, a release is expected in two to four years. Nintendo has not confirmed or commented on any of the information and has not yet announced a new The Legend of Zelda

Resident Evil 4 Remake Featured Unreleased "Chapter 0" Starring Ashley

02.01.26 - Capcom's Resident Evil 4 Remake (PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, PC) originally featured an unreleased "Chapter 0" that featured Ashley Graham as a playable character.

Modders discovered references to an intro level in the game files, in which Ashley roams the woods in front of Leon S. Kennedy and meets members of Los Illuminados during a ritual. The unfinished sequence shows that Ashley would have been traveling without a light source, possibly a cell phone should have served as lighting.

The route led to the sacrificial site and towards the village, with multiple triggers for patrols, hidden events, and cutscenes. Parts of the environment still exist, including player spawners and animation changes that illustrate Ashley's escape from Ganado enemies.

The scenes in which Ashley climbs through huts, uses tunnels and hides should lead to her capture and passage to the church. The chapter was deleted before publication. According to the modders, the original gameplay experience can be reconstructed based on the remaining assets, even though many mechanics and graphical elements are not included in the final game

Guys read the Ark interview in the updates.

It's about how UE5 new update increases performance by up to 40%.

It's going to make some ps5 and xsx games 60fps. And make switch 2 versions of games viable.

They are also experimenting on switch 2 frame generation.

They also made an interesting choice with their switch 2 port. They didn't want to downgrade it like the series S version. They are aiming for it to look like the series X version albeit at a lower resolution.

They don't even know if its possible atm but it will be Interesting to find out.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Demo will be released tomorrow

06.01.26 - Square Enix will release a demo of the role-playing game Dragon Quest VII Reimagined (PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, PC) on 07.01.26.

Saves from the demo can be transferred to the full version. In addition, all users who play the demo will receive the "Day Off Dress" costume for Maribel, which can then be used in the full version.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined combines classic role-playing elements with a new, handcrafted 3D look. Characters, cities and dungeons appear like detailed dioramas, while cutscenes tell the story in the same stylized aesthetic. Release: 05.02.26 (Europe)
