Played half an hour of the ARMS demo yesterday, and I'm not sure this is a game for me. Like I guessed at before the demo, the pacing is too slow to be frantic and too fast to be truely strategic. Movement is slow, only just fast enough to allow for dodges. The curving of your arms is also not as advanced as I had hoped. Your arms always start straight, it's near impossible to curve them around something in a wide arc, unless you're using the boomerang set of arms, which then kind of dilutes the concept. Instead of swerving around your opponent, you just end up rather stationary, spamming hits. I also came out against this one guy playing as the ninja one, who just keeped blinking all over the place, making it impossible to hit him, as your arms auto-aim, but lose track of him when he blinks. That means all you can do is guess where he'll reappear and guide your arms there, hoping you guessed right and score a hit. He beat me without me even hitting him one.
The volley minigame is pretty pants too, and I can know, because I play volleyball myself. The game doesn't resemble the sport in the least. You can't aim where the ball will land, so there's no potential for tactics, and making it so that you can reach the ball when it's on the other field was a big mistake as well. It's just spamming arms everywhere. I tried to play it like you would play the actual sport once, but that didn't pan out either.
Would you look at the quality of those windows? I mean seriously, as a professional I can say that it's not everyday that you see such fine details. Double paned in an aluminum frame to the exact width of the wall. I'm going to guess there's also some kind of solar block film on the window panes to stop the building from overheating. Quality stuff, thanks for sharing Edge!
Quality indeed.
I await your feeble attempt to a rebuttal.
Here's the full quote:
Capcom on the importance of utilizing a platform's unique feature, keeping an eye on Switch
The following is the full translation of a statement from Capcom COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto, which recently had a select blurb making the rounds.
“I can see that consumers are buying the Switch because they are interested in the Switch itself. Even my younger daughter in grade school, who had never played console games, decided she wanted one.
As a software company, it is essential to understand exactly what people want from games on the Switch.
The DS was in a similar situation. There was a lot of apprehension at first due to the unique dual screen nature of it, but that apprehension took a positive turn, and its sales exploded. But that was all thanks to Nintendo pushing for games that took full advantage of the feature, third-party titles did not sell very well at first. The same situation occurred with the Wii.
The bottom line is, nobody will show interest in your game if you don’t shape it around the uniqueness of the console it’s on. You could say the same for VR. There’s a great variety of VR games available now, but just a small fraction of those have been well-received by players.
We at Capcom are continuing our fundamental research into establishing an environment capable of releasing titles on any gaming device. We are releasing Ultra Street Fighter II on the Switch in May, and we’ll be keeping an eye on it as we decide where to go from there.”
Ebay?
Now I have a keyboard, I can reply to this.
Motion controls are basically perfect, they are scarily accurate. Note that you can guide your punches after you throw them like homing missiles. Blocking is easily done. I suspect your grip on the controllers was wrong, the sticks have to face each other inwards.
This was one random battle online mode, which was all that was availible on the demo. The title screen had many more modes to play. And the reason people keep playing online is because it's fun to do so. That's the only reason I play Splatoon turf wars, I can't earn anything, I am maxxed out to fuck and still play cause it's so satisfying. Arms has that one more go - feeling to it.
There is tons of depth but it depends on if you were talking about combat and the game in general or just volleyball?
In regards to the combat there were vast differences depending on who I chose to play as and what arms I decided to equip. Ribbon girl for instance can spend virtually the whole match airborne. I was dancing and weaving about, charging my fists behind stage obstacles and letting fly over the top of opponents heads. With Master Mummy blocking stance recharges your health so I would back off and hide behind something and block, regaining my health. The opponent sees this and moves forward to stop you so you can bait them in. They can throw you when you are blocking, so what I did was bait them into trying a throw, blocking the throw by throwing out my heavy arm, then used my lighter arm right after to sucker punch them in the face. So satisfying.
I found that choosing the right ARM(s) like mummys massive purple blocker, with him you can block peoples normal attacks with your heavier arms. So I used that strategy. Also in terms of depth if you are hit while blocking too much it can disable one, or both of your Arms for a time.
There are also Mario Kart style item drops like health regen or special move chargers which you have to move close to, to benefit from their effects. And sometimes if you are close to one and get near it, the enemy will move forward to try and get it too and you can pummel them. Sometimes giant floating bombs of fire or electricity will drop and you have to knock them towards the opponent.
There is a stage where the border is a trampoline and if you can bounce off it right you can get an offensive advantage. There are also tactics at work, in three man battles it's like a Mexican standoff, but there are huge backstabbing opportunities too. It's great fun when you gang up on one player and then turn the attack on your so-called partner. Even better when you are just observing two fighting it out and charging yourself at the back waiting to pick them off.
4 player tag teams can be chaotic, but can also be awesome fun. Like when I charged my fists and shot right through my teamate, hitting him and the enemy and knocking them both out. It's also soooooooo satisfying when you do a lot of damage but die and watch your teamate come through to win us the match in the end.
OMFG. I was ass deep into a long ass rebuttbal when the page refreshed and killed my post. wtf!!
I'm going to have to half ass this now FFS.
GG SAYS Again I have no idea what is going on here, spamming arms? No if you read up on the extras section of the demo it explains how you can lift and spike the ball. I did really well in one match and poorly in another. It's a nice diversion from the main battles and works well.
Lastly I cannot stress enough, you need to try the game with button controls, it's more traditional, accurate and satisfying than motion but not as fun.
This is what 1v1v1 matches are like:
So my biggest gripe with Arms is that you cannot play with button inputs on the big screen unless you use the grip. The game auto senses how the joycons are being used. So for handheld mode, its button controls. When I undock the joycons and try to play on the big screen the button inputs works for a while, but then if I slightly move the joycons it assumes I want to play with motion controls and the character becomes unresponsive. Then I am back to motion controls.
GAF says that if you use the grip it works fine, I didn't have my grip with me. Seems stupid you can't just select your control method from the pause menu.
Also, they missed a trick here, with motion controls you have to lean both joycons either forward, back, left or right to move - but the sticks are right there and would have have been perfect to have character movement on the left stick whilst still having independant motion controls for both arms.
GG, I am going to rebutt your rebuttal.
In reply to everything you said:
I'm not saying that there is no depth to it, but it has a certain clumsiness not inherent to Splatoon. And that's the game ARMS will be compared with. Splatoon has a wide array of systems that interlock masterfully. ARMS seems to be a much narrower game and thus won't have the same mass market appeal. It'll probably sell well based on the fact that it's a new Nintendo IP on a new Nintendo console, but I predict people will spend a lot less time playing it than they did Splatoon. ARMS to me seems quite close to Monster Hunter, in that it's a game with a loth of depth, but due to it being harder to get to grips with, will only be enjoyed for a longer period of time by a smaller playerbase.
It's the epitome of an early launch period game that people are only interested in because there's nothing else to play. Looks cheesy.
I agree. That, and it's a new 1st party IP by Nintendo.
Xx is a 3ds port. Tri on Wii u ported from already decent looking Wii version. Mh xx on 3ds looks like ass, check the comparison screens.
I know. I was just hoping they'd take the graphics beyond what we had seen on the WiiU.
It's a pretty huge difference in honesty, from the 3DS (expand the picture). But there's only so much you can do with the originals' visuals.
So Vader tries the game and can't punch straight - yet hundreds of people report that the controls are scarily accurate who played it on GAF. What's more likely - Vader holding the joycon incorrectly (he later turned out to be sick and having the shits) or Vader just happens to be the one person on the internet with a faulty demo? Arms also asks you to hold the joycons in a completely non-traditional way, so if you missed it in the diagrams or didn't do it right, all your aim would be off. (Also FFS, try out the button controls, they are great)
So you tried 'most of' the characters and you still think movement is still too slow? Even when characters have vastly different movement speeds and have different speeds and distance when using the DASH button. I just played as other characters and used the dash, some characters are vastly faster than others, try playing as Master Mummy and dashing vs Ninjara and his movement which is top notch. You also aren't supposed to be creeping about like a boxer, you can dash about constantly if you want to, and with Ribbon Girl for instance you can jump incessantly and stay airborne most of the match.
If you're talking about just moving about left and right normally you're right, but nobody does that. That's why there's a dash button.
Nope, it's hugely useful. For instance, move to the back rim of a certain stage and you can bounce off the rim and get a super aerial attack. On stages with pillars, moving about gives you cover behind objects and allows you to charge or think out a strategy. On some stages you can move so far back that the other players attacks can't reach you and you can bait him to move to you while you can charge up an attack.
Moving about in a 4 player match allows you to hide behind your partner, pretty useful when you are using someone like Master Mummy as a shield and he flinches less often and can block others punches. Moving about also lets you head towards in game item drops.
Also with what you were talking about with curling your punches, wow. I tried the demo out again about an hour again (use the trick in todays updates) and with certain Arms you can indeed curl punches around massive arcs all the way around. Works great.
You're doing it wrong. You only have to press one button and it flips between targets. If you can do it with Zelda you should be able to do it here. I found it hard in the very first 1v 1v 1 because I didn't know which button - but once I looked and read the help pages from the games menu it showed you what you press. You can get pounded by the other two. But you could also be the one doing the pounding. Or use your useful movement ability to back off and let them fight it out. Chances are if you hang back, don't attack and block they won't come for you.
A - I have no idea what you are talking about. Where you hit the ball and from what angle decides where the ball goes. Simple physics.
B - what's wrong with everyone trying to hit the ball frantically trying to get it over the net? That's the aim of the whole game of volleyball.
It can be frantic even with a slow movement speed. Why? Because each item is on a timer and only stays there for a limited period of time, so while the process of getting there may be slower than in other games, it's still frantic because you have only a few seconds to get there. And seriously, use the fricking dash button, you can hit it repeatedly and use it for going forward and back as well as left and right. Spam the dash button as Ninjara and see how fast you go. I even practiced as Mechanica an hour ago, she has a dash jet booster on her back and smoothly strafes while charging too and her hover move also charges you in midair and decreases the damage you take. This game has a ton of depth.
There is a clumsiness to Arms, because we/you played for all of, well less than an hour I'm guessing with a fully motion control method (seriously try joycon grip button input). I played in total for about 45 minutes I guess excluding the practice I got today and it's not really clumsy at all. You will need to play it to get good and practice because it's not streetfighter 2, it's not wii sports either. It's a deep game with tons of strategy and items and different characters. That assures Arms will have Legs. Yeah I just did that.
I don't get why you have to compare it to Splatoon in appeal - and I can see you are already coming up with reasons for why it might sell in spite of itself - same thing for Switch and Mario Kart. You might not get the appeal of it - getting out of the VGpress bubble and reading GAF, there are shitloads of people including myself who do see the appeal and have gotten better with the controls - they are buying it.
Having played the demo for another half hour today, I'm loving it, I think there are a ton of things to discover and new ways to play. I will go on record to say it's going to get 8/10s and 9/10 reviews and will sell at least 2 million. If the updates are meaningful it will run well for at least as long as they keep up those updates, same as Splatoon's 1 year of updates.
Now onto further demo impressions, you really can aim your punches after you have thrown them - and the arcs and angles all work perfectly with motion control. Damn, the dash varies so much with different characters and different characters have different movement and dash speeds. Ninjara is scary in movement speed and dash, even disregarding his teleport move. Master Mummy is like playing as Zangief.
Also heavier characters flinch less and can therefore attack more and using some of the heavier arms they can block most attacks that are thrown straight at them. Great depth in this game.
I'm already developing strategies with Mechanica, you can dash/strafe to the side which also charges your attack them unleash it. Or hover in mid-air while charging then unleash the attack in mid-air too. Also I had heard people complaining that they couldn't hit people when they were jumping like Ribbon girl so I tested out the controls. Yup you can uppercut and throw your punches so they arc upwards. You get 3D control of both arms independently across all axis. Mindblown. Then I tried Min Min and if you dash while in the air she air kicks back any attack thrown at her. So good.
Then I tried with Helix, I godamn hate this character, so weird to fight against and play as. But I can see some people being experts with this guy. He can shrink down and make himself hard to hit, or elongate his body like a flexible lamp post and lean left and right to punch like a stretched out boxer. He could completely hide behind a pillar, stretch himself out and punch from behind cover whilst having a clear view of you. In fact that is exactly what happened to me one match. Seriously some insane stuff these characters can do. And then there are the arms themselves, switching between them.
Damn, so much potential, I equipped a guardian arm and it acts like a floating shield you throw out in front of you. Only you can manipulate its position in a 3D space with motion and you can move or dash behind it to block your opponents attack. Helix has this blue ball arm that double bounces off the ground so its going to be harder to block - but it also inks the opponents screen like the ink in mario kart.
The HD rumble is amazing when you pay attention to what is happening. You can feel (aforementioned Helix's orb) bouncing off the ground in one hand. When you throw out the guardian you can feel it humming in your hand and the intensity varies depending on how close it is to you.
