From talking to a handful of those involved with it, there is a prevailing sense of Nintendo letting go of the reins with the project. Their involvement with it isn’t as controlling as you might imagine. While representatives of the ‘Big N’ are closely overseeing it and their approval is required for anything concerning the use of their characters; even the most outlandish ideas from the developers have been met with little resistance. Nintendo is letting Ubisoft play freely in the Mario sandbox with few restrictions and that creative freedom is evident in just about every aspect of it.


Take, for example, the game’s slightly twisted sense of humour. The title from what we’ve heard is laden with surreal, self referential gags and Ubisoft staff argue that it works fairly well in context. In one of the prototypes seen earlier in development, one source recalled a hulky Donkey Kong themed rabbid serving as one of the first boss encounters. The rabbid has access to a pile of bananas that it can use to replenish its health. Players are required to first cut off his food supply to prevent him from recovering before they can do some real damage. The DK rabbid apparently will dab periodically if it lands an attack correctly (a possible reference to DK’s dab from Mario Kart . Once the boss is defeated, one member of the player’s party, a rabbid cosplaying as Princess Peach, takes out a smart phone and nabs a selfie with the DK Rabbid as it collapses.

The game isn’t all weird in-jokes and meme humour, however. There appears to be a fair deal of substance to its mechanics. The 8 playable characters each have an individual skill tree of sorts through which they can develop their own special abilities. Each of them start with a base skill that they can later improve, in addition to learning new ones. For example, Mario has a passive ability which enables him to automatically fire at an enemy if they enter his field of vision during the enemy’s turn. Some of these powers are common across multiple characters, but the unique ones like Peach’s powerful ability to inflate enemies using a foot pump until they explode adds a layer of strategy to the game. Players will have to take care when considering where to place each character.


If its in-development prototypes are any indication, Mario + Rabbids is set to offer a decent amount of content outside of its 20 or so hour long campaign. Sources recall seeing indications that an online suite was being tested several months back, although this mode was inaccessible in the aforementioned test builds. At the very least, we know the final game is set to offer 2 player co-op locally in some capacity. An additional mode named ‘Arena’ was spotted in the test UI, too, which promised some local co-op action.

I checked all the help stuff and I admit I missed that there was a button for switching targets.  I notice that a lot of the depth you talk about comes from how all characters differ from one and other.  But to me that means very little.  Remember, I'm the guy who only ever played Splatoon with the .52Gal.  I know full well that I'll nd up only ever playing as one fighter.  I am also aware that general reception has been very good, I don't need to go to Gaf to notice that.  You can write as long a wall of text as you wish, but untill I play another testfire this weekend, I'm not going to change my opinion.  I am however going to give the demo another go as I want to be convinced by the game.  So far though, that hasn't happened yet.  And if I don't end up liking ARMS, well that's just fine as well.

But the long wall of text as you say is to explain why what you were saying was incorrect, like being able to easily flip between targets, or being able to have wide arching punches, being able to choose where a volley ball spikes to, or why movement does matter. Or how you can dash about and different characters having different movement and dash speeds/abilities.

Wait you never changed weapons in Splatoon?

I think I played about 20 mins of the first testpunch and had the same experience as everyone else. Wut am I doing? How do I control this? This is weird, maybe I wont like this. Then I played the second testpunch for 40 minutes and it was great, used the joycon grip for traditional controls (try this next time too, it works excellently). Then I played about 30 minutes of the next testpunch mixed motion/joycon control methods and was schooling fools, by this time I had tested new characters, come up with strategies and it felt really satisfying. I was floating through the air as Ribbon Girl or blocking and using massive fists as Master Mummy and recharging and/or using in game obstacles to my advantage.

Then I played the demo yesterday for about 40 mins total and saw how much depth there is to the game. We still have new stages, new characters and you get about 3 arms to choose from in the demo for each character, when it shows there are like over 20 different arms in the full game.

What I'd say to you now is the go play the demo now, practice and then ready yourself for online play at the weekend.

Easy cheat to play the Arms Testpunch whenever

You can play the test area repeatedly with this easy workaround. You can really test everything out when there isn't some asshole attacking you. But why stick to one character in a game? Seems weird.

While a bit bummed with some of the missing characters from Marvel vs Capcom Infinite I am very happy to see Jedah, Monster Hunter dude, and Thanos making an appearance. Still very hyped for this game.

GG thanks for the in depth posts, it's good to have one of us really dive deep. Problem is we all have so much to play that most games need to grab instantly to win our money. Splatoon did that for me, this not so much. And if I wanted a fighting game I would pick injustice or Tekken way before arms. But it will have a cult following and it will score well. Seems like a good power stone sort of fighter.

Very happy that Shantae is coming to Switch next week.  I was kinda holding out on getting it for WiiU as I assumed it would arrive on Switch.  Seems like the perfect kind of game to play out of the house.

Wouldn't hold my breath for this to come to the West, but lord knows I'd grab it in a heartbeat. S-E could print themselves a butt-load of money if they dug up the old partial translation that was done on Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2) and just get it finished. If a couple of fans could make an English patch for it back in the late 90's, I'm pretty sure they could do it now.

That would be very awesome if they did that.

When I saw this I thought it was Persona 4 Golden coming to PS4.....then I got disappointed, followed by severe anger, then sadness.
