But GG after 6 years you believe no one, not even Nintendo, Team Ninja, Retro, or any other company reached the full potential of the Wii?

Yes. Wii was not in an (all things being equal situation.)

It was not at the forefront of game development as GC/Xbox and PS2 were at the time. Wii was in a situation where mostly everyone moved onto better hardware and better graphics and 360/PS3. Otherwise why would Wii owners have to look to PSP developers like Climax or shitty licenced game developers like High Voltage for graphics? We even had a couple of stories reporting that publishers were not willing to pay for high budget or better graphics games on Wii. There was one story where a dev tried to get publisher funding for a game such as that and the publishers would not fund it, saying graphics were not the focus of the console because of Wii Sports. I have an elephant memory for these kinds of things, this is why I get annoyed because it seems like everyone else has forgotten these things.

Nintendo is not a graphics pusher. As I have already said -and this is why it's frustrating- if you look back on N64, GC, even 3DS right now - the best looking games on the platforms are not made by Nintendo.

With GC, Burnout 2, RE4, F-Zero GX, Starfox Adventures, Rogue Squadron, Rebel Strike etc were all better looking technically than WW, Mario Sunshine and even Metroid Prime 2 (if you forget about art)

And as I have already said, technically it's widely known that you can make better looking games at 30 FPS compared to 60 FPS. Hence logically, if Wii's best looking games were 60 FPS then they could have done better at 30. Ubisoft were asked when they made Red Steel 2 if this was the best graphics the Wii could do and their response was something like "Of course not, we are 60 FPS but we feel that the smoothness is needed for gameplay". And they did it because they were consulting with Retro at the time on controls and they suggested 60 was better for gameplay fluidity.

Wii development shunted away in the past 2 and a half years because sales were dropping and Nintendo was working on Wii U so it didn't even get that final generation of games where everyone was super experienced with the hardware. You are still seeing 360 get games made at the forefront of development 7 years on.

Retro went from a great looking First person engine to a 2D side scroller (made with 3D engine) and if you can show me a better looking side scroller on Xbox or Cube (made with 3D engine)  I would be mightly surprised. Team Ninja's Metroid looked very good - but their main teams and larger budgets were still probably on DOA or Ninja Gaiden 3. I think you are forgetting and mistaking Other M's graphics because it does not look good on an HDTV. Tell me how it looks worse than Ninja Gaiden:

Foolz so you believe MP3 is the best looking game of the entire PS2/Xbox era, including Wii in that era since its the same tech. Its a beautiful game but I still think games like RE4 look better. Its not about framerate or a bunch of technical crap, I just look at the two and RE4 is more impressive to me.

Even this is a false argument. RE4 was letterboxed on GC, they had large black borders and a smaller screen space to render. They could essentially do more because they had to render less.PS2 managed widescreen but with lesser graphics.

On GC they could not even do proper anamorphic widescreen. On Wii when they did RE4, they managed to do fullscreen graphics, anamorphic widescreen. So even this game proves that Wii is more powerful than GC.

Dvader said:

GG is correct that the Wii being played on an HDTV totally ruined it for all of us. Its still Nintendo's fault that they didnt go HD.

I agree on this and because SDTVs have been phased you are going to be left in a situation where Wii's graphics will age even more as resolutions increase. If you check out the NeoGaf Dolphin thread, you can see that Wii's graphics in HD still look very nice. You said you liked Dead Space Extraction on PS3 in HD right?

To summarise:

  • Wii is not a powerhouse
  • Nintendo is not a premier graphics developer
  • 30 FPS yields better graphics than 60 in terms of detail
  • Wii had lesser talent and lower budgets for its games, compared to other systems (past and present)
  • But the games still broadly looked better than GC and Xbox (but with no programmable shaders - custom TEV only)
  • Coding custom shaders is something only the dedicated can do well.
  • Since the money and graphics-talent was not there there was a paucity of custom shaders.

INTERNET THIS IS WHY I HATE THEE!

Criterion stopped making GC games after Burnout 2. They went on to make another 2 Xbox games and then moved onto PS3 and 360.

Excitebots is made by Monster Games. Please don't tell me you are comparing a great developer with an average one. There was not one graphically great Wii racer. In fact other than Mario Kart there was not one great Wii racer. (shut it Excitetruck posse!) No Burnout or Codemasters level racer was ever attempted on Wii.

Since we talking about this I played through the first level of MP3 and Mario Galaxy 2 again last night on an SDTV in 4:3 (remember that your widescreen tv is stretching and bloating the native 4:3 wii output). The performance and general polish and look of these games is above anything I remember last gen but I will be kicking up my Xbox and GC over the weekend to confirm. I prefer a polished experience rather than games which attempt to push things so far the framerate suffers, or jaggies appear. The depth of field in Mario Galaxy 2 is beautiful and when the camera zooms in to mario he's quality.

Prime 3 is sparkling and the transparancies are great, it has a soft look to it though with the lighting and the jaggies are more prominent than I remember. The colours, lighting, art and texture detail are all well above GC Prime.

GC prime

Wii Prime

Forgetting that, man I love this game, the flow, the controls, the smooth framerate. So immersive too.

U CPU

Pretty bad.

But like I said, in context the DSP effectively adds 50% more CPU power by offloading audio compared to 360 and the GPGPU is designed to take tasks away from the CPU. If it weren't for those factors, games wouldn't even run on Wii U. Seriously the 360 had a tri core 3.2ghz? 360 games shouldn't even run on Wii U given a tri core 1.24 ghz CPU.

Nintendo underclocked it to avoid overheating in a small case. What stupidity. Make a larger case.

Hi, everyone! Had no phone, cable or Internet yesterday, yes, courtesy of the Hurricane, still! Played a bunch of Need for Speed and Darksiders Wii U!

I liked that article about Iwata saying the HAL Laboratory was named that to troll IBM because they are all 1 letter before the three letters that make up IBM's name.

SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:

  • SMB Mix-Up! (1AB2-0000-0047-5A7D)
  • Storm the Castle (77BD-0000-00E0-A9C0)

Posting from wii u. keyboard needs to be bigger. very responsive touchscreen. can use fingers to type quickly. screen is huge but quality is low. can seen artifacts on text. colours are washed out. i tried nintendoland, more of a demo than a game. cool though. system is a million different things at once. Wii U is not a cool singular vision but puzzling, diverse and exceedingly interesting. net browser is boss. pad is nice, heavier than i thought but still fine for gameplay. bring on the games

This browser is two steps away from perfection. Flash and a bigger keyboard please. Otherwise, wow. I was thinking of getting a tablet for the house. Don't really need one now.

Still posting via u. When u aren't directly comparing your hdtv with the u pad screen it actually looks all right. default brightness is 4, you can turn it up. My favourite feature so far is the dual audio with the u pad speakers and tv sound. it's delightful.
