It had more impact when it came out. It really was bigger and more diverse than the first game. Since then you've likely played 15-20 games that built on what Gears started.
Mind you, I got it home and played it in about 2 sittings, so my memory of it ain't to specific, but I do remember feeling it was bigger and badder, as advertised.
I'm not being nitpicky, but I thought the days of being wowed over cutscene graphics was over. Show me more realtime gameplay and actual levels in daylight with geometry. I'm wowed by Crysis 3's tech video and next gen consoles should be able to do a pared down version of that fairly easily. Maybe I'm not excited because I don't like MGS.
I don't doubt that it was real time for the cutscene, but a cutscene is different from realtime in gameplay. Take that shot of Snake's face close up, there is no background it's black with rain and they can use all the rendering power to make a highly detailed face, think about the Shenmue Passport disc content where the faces were greatly enhanced over and above what was actually used in game. In a cutscene you can put the camera where you like and not render anything else beyond what is in shot, so you can razor focus the engine specifically where you want to prioritise textures. And things like that cloth physics could be key animation specifically done for the cutscenes that will not be apparent during realtime gameplay unless it's a faked cut back version.
What I tend to do with HD games is during gameplay, if there is an NPC or texture I want to get a close look at I go and look at it close up and see how good it is. That will be the test of MGS Zeros, whether during gameplay in daylight everything holds up. Kojima could have put 10 out of 11 minutes of that Zeros video as HD video on Bluray and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. When the gameplay starts, if you watch it in HD and enlarge the screen you can see it isn't nearly as impressive as the cutscenes. The level is virtually flat, with a fence and a few towers or tents about, very simple geometry.
What impressed me the most was just before the gameplay started the camera zoomed about Snakes model and close to his hand and there was an impressive level of detail there when it phased back to gameplay. That's where something like tesselation will come in handy next gen. We can already render highly detailed models but prioritising texture detail through LOD or tesselation will make everything you look at as good as something which was before prioritised by artists - which is why you can see some janky textures in games next to great ones. There was also a great level of detail on the rocks Snake crawled over but again that was framed in a specific shot in a cutscene, in open gameplay I would like to see if you could whip the camera up close and see the same LOD.
Strange how this game divides people. I hated it too but I'm not big on fighters, I prefer simpler arcade style beat em ups I guess.
I literally have no idea what you're talking about.
Yeah I saw most of the other gameplay footage, shakey cam though. People are freaking out just because I haven't gone all goggle eyed over the newest MGS showcase. As I said in before if people would actually read the detail about what said carefully on how the characters and LOD were fantastic etc there would not be such a reaction. The gameplay footage was okay (great actually), but I'm just wary that this video is going to be like the opening level of Chaos Theory, it's almost exactly the same as how that was presented with a storm and rain lashing down, with lightning flaring in the background, in the dark where reflections can be better rendered, with lights causing lens flare. Unless every level is set during a wet stormy night the rest of the game ain't going to look like that. That's all I'm saying. In the daylight and especially on the current gen console versions which this is made for, it is not going to look as good. And using cutscenes to value the graphics level of a game is not good.
Take that Crysis 3 tech video I posted, all in daylight with much, much more complex geometry, all in realtime gameplay scenarios. Geometry is very important, if you look at that Crysis 3 video I posted the levels are vertical as well as horizontal there is sooooooooooo much more geometry on display which is far more difficult to render than the fairly simple environments we saw in that Ground Zero video and still bear in mind that Zero's is getting off fairly lightly, because the black of night means it does not have to render what is beyond a certain point.
Also I still have bad memories from Kojima, he is not past duping people with impressive initial videos of his MGS games. I vividly remember the MGS 3D realtime video he did one year.
Check this video out at 5 minutes 47 seconds. Next year the actual game showed up looking nowhere near as good as the models and engine he built for this initial showing.
Remember the 2005 TGS MGS4 unveiling? Built on PS3 devkits?
When the game came out people complained that it did not look as good, in fact some janky screens went around the web.
I like good graphics as much as the next man, but I'm increasingly cynical on the subject as well as gaming on the whole. So it's harder for me to get excited, especially when I see the gameplay. I was woefully let down when Watch Dogs gameplay reverted to a cover shooter behind cars and the same for Star Wars 1313.
I want it. Mostly because of Shenmue.
The original was developed by Luxoflux. A side note, if you enjoy the plot or scenarios the developers took a lot of experience from Hong Kong Crime movies, Infernal Affairs, Johnnie To movies, John Woo etc.
Stop complaining GG. You got called nitpicky, I got called insane.
Now that's ABSURD! GG isn't nitpicky!

Did you get to the part with the fish monster and the raft? That pretty much killed it for me.

Ah, I see.
Yeah that was the boss battle that was glitchy. His tentacles would come down and I would randomly get stuck and couldnt move for like a second which was enough time to sink me.
Well said GG but with all the tech stuff you are talking jibberish to me. I am sure everything you said is true, but I go by what I see and even if this was all some giant magic trick it looked stunning and better than anything I have played (I am a console gamer remember). I know what this gens graphics look like, that was something more. If this is truely for PS3/360 then yes that video is a target demo that the actual game will not live up to. Kojima claims this is done with specs at a PS3 level so that is probably why all the stuff you mentioned is the way it is. The engine is very impressive, especially the animation, facial and movement, for third person games that is very important. A FPS doesnt need to worry about animations cause you never see the character. I will always be more impressed by a good third person engine than one shown in FPS because that is what I enjoy playing the most.
Yeah. It was THAT, plus once I did get him to appear, throwing grenades into his mouth was really hit or miss. I don't know what it was about the grenade indicator in that game but it never, ever clicked with me. It made that battle almost impossible.
I got the grenades alright but the freezing was driving me nuts cause it would always happen after the first grenade hit, and it takes FOREVER of just waiting to get to that part. There is a part where you literally wait almost a minute before the enemy resurfaces, just you standing there doing nothing.
Well today got a bit crazy for me so I cant finish the game like I wanted to. I have to leave today for an almost week long trip, will have to finish it later. Oh well.
Can somebody explain what has happened to my Boston Red Sox over the last 2 years?
After Gears 2 I have been thinking of what to play next and I keep wanting to play games I already finished. I really want to do a MGS series playthrough for the 25th Anniversary. I want to play my IHD co/SotC game. I want to replay RE5 before RE6.
But I have so many new games to play. What is wrong with me.
You know nothing of faliure. Mr all my teams are awesome always. 2 years, what I would give for only two years of crappiness in football and baseball.
I know the feeling....the problem is there's TOO MANY games nowadays...you can't play them all, let alone have time to replay old games.
