Oh, come now! Making fun of Gaffers is just what I do!
I've been playing these:
...and watching this:
** Best CARTOON EVAR ! ! ! **
...and now a word from our Sponsor:
Oh man is anyone else playing Sleeping Dogs? Highly recommend it....this game is awesome.
First off, this game is beautiful. This is exactly what I'd imagine a new Shenmue looking like...same art style just detailed to the hilt. The best looking game I have played since Witcher 2, possibly even moreso. I have the HD Texture mod installed and everything maxed out except for anti-ailasing which I normally put on medium to keep the frame rate stable. Its gorgeous.
The game was definitely developed with a Gamepad in mind, so I'm using the Xbox pad instead of KB/Mouse. So far I've finished two missions...I heard a rumor that its not a long game, but the world seems huge...maybe side quests add quite a bit of length? The combat is really fun, reminds me of Yakuza as you take on 10 guys at a time and beat the shit out of them. There's all kinds of upgrades you get as you gain experience throughout the game.
So far, fucking loving it. What exactly did Activision not see in this?
^ I have heard that the PC version looks stunning. That rain is awesome. I think next gen will be all about rain.
I got this today:
After two episodes you'll be hooked.
That is so gross Edge.
I've just been playing Brutal Legend.
Ratchet Deadlocked HD is a ThingComing to PSN.
Why didn't they just include this in that compilation? Kind of stupid to sell the worst game in the series standalone.
Nothing wrong with that my man.
The hilarious thing was taking a picture of my girlfriend's mother holding the box.
Ok, Sleeping Dogs is seriously badass.
After you finish the first couple missions, it opens up into a full open world a la GTA. So yeah, I can see how if you just do the main missions its probably not super long, but doing EVERYTHING will easily take a good chunk of time. Again, the game is beautiful...man when you see the big city it looks so alive at some points. I jumped in a car and the radio comes on, changed the station and they have a Roadrunner Records channel (longtime Metal label) with one of my favorite bands, Opeth, cranking! Awesome! In fact there's quite a few stations just like GTA.
There's hidden lock boxes with serious cash in them all over the world, but when you spot one you typically have to fight a group of tough thugs who are guarding them most of the time. I got my first upgrade, a Triad one that makes me more durable in combat. Helped a few citizens on side quests. There's "massage" parlors where you can go to, err, get taken care of. All kinds of shit. So far this is easily one of the best open world games I have played. Easily up there with some of the GTA games. Its so immersive, this game has a smooth feel and flow to it that many games like this don't have. It feels ALIVE.
So this was supposed to be True Crime: Hong Kong? Are these guys the same developers who did the old True Crime? I remembered a few people on Gamespot back in the day saying they enjoyed it, but I never played it.
Almost done with Gears 2, I expected more from this game. I thought the first one was the warm up and the second one would be the one to really be incredible but it isnt much better than the first. My issue with the game is that it doesn't change things up enough or have enough options for the player. Most of the game is simply hide behind wall and shoot, and there isnt really any other way to approach a situation. Yeah you get some interesting guns to use but they dont change things much. Enemies are bullet sponges and it doesnt really matter where you hit them, except for the head.
But above all its the combat scenarios and level design that matter. The game tries but it fails in comparison to games I really love like Uncharted, RE4, RE5 and even the Mass Effect games. I started playing today from where I left off, inside a giant worm, pretty cool. This section was basically a giant time based obstacle course where you had to avoid giant teeth by simply running past them at the right time. Later you get chased by a giant ball of crap, again its just you running. There was potential for so much in this section but it was very basic in its execution. I go from that to this section of the game where you enter this base that is empty except for some auto turrets. So you have to avoid them which is a nice change of pace but its nothing more than running or diving from cover to cover. Then the place gets invaded by these boring enemies that are small and simply run at you, the game gives you a flamethrower so you just flame them as they come. This goes on for over 10 minutes of just rooms with turrets arranged differently and these stupid enemies that pose zero threat. Then you enter a room with these monsters in big test tubes. Now I am excited, a new type of enemy.... and they break out and simply run at me. So all you have to do in this part is have your chainsaw going and the enemies literally run into you and kill themselves. The entire section is these enemies popping out of tubes and running into your chainsaw. I did nothing but move and hold B.
Then you go into this part with loads of turrets and Dom asks do you want to operate the turrets or navigate them. So I am thinking here comes a cool puzzle where I have to switch off turrets in a certain sequence to guide him, sweet. Nope you simply push the only button that is active, which then activates another button for you to press, and you do this five times, totally pointless. Finally some actual enemies show up and I was thrilled to get back to the cover shooting.
After that the game got much better with a segment where I got to drive a tank thing, that was awesome but no boss battle. Here is a moment to have this vehicle battle some giant monster thing but nope, instead you have to avoid holes in the ground. Later there is some cool stuff with boats that is more in line with what I enjoy about TPS, neat setpieces like that. There was finally a boss battle, it only took 6 hours to get one. It was interesting but it kept glitching on me where I would get frozen in a spot when I had to rush to hit a tentacle.
Now I compare what I played to games like RE where you can approach most any combat situation in many way. The areas are open and you dont need to hide, you can keep moving around and use a variety of melee attacks. Uncharted has so much more going on besides the cover shooting, I dont need to explain that. Not to mention the action sequences that rival movies, Gears has nothing that comes close to those. Mass Effect has so many awesome powers you get to use, plus you can direct your squad. The enemies in a ME game have all sorts of different powers as well and the shield/barriers make you approach them differently. Any combat scenario in ME2/3 has way more options than anything in Gears.
So that is where I am at with the game. The shooting is great, feels so responsive. I am sure online is a blast. I just don't see this game matching up to others like it this gen.
(I still really enjoy the game, I just wouldnt classify it as a top tier game)
