THIS WAS FATHOMS_BASIC (v)

"...but to assume that Rockstar paid off a bunch of sources, and to assume that one source had a "cascading effect" on other sites (including ours over at PSX Extreme), kinda says that we journalists don't have a mind of our own.

I've never been paid off or coerced by another source to significantly change a score. There's no reason to do that. I have no motivation to do it. I get paid to do my job and I do it to the best of my ability. What you're implying is just a little insulting to the integrity of journalists and critics, that's all."

I've never heard of PSX Extreme, but it sounds something like Fathoms would be involved with. I don't think any PR company is going to put pressure or give incentives or exclusive reviews to smaller sites, so perhaps he can't apply his experience to the experience of larger media outlets?

BTW The Thundercats blog is up!

http://72.39.110.251:55000/blog.php?id=124

That's what I was thinking too, LOL. This Fathoms dude must be pretty full of himself if he thinks working at some little niche site is the same as IGN or Gamespot. Or he's really gullable.

Anyone try out that Valkyria Chronicles demo, OMG its so sweet. Imagine FE but without fantasy, make it modern war (in anime style) and instead of just watching a cutscene of combat you actually play it.  When you pick a unit to move the camera zooms into the battlefield and you move your character around it just like an action game, you have a certain amount of time that you can move and you can only shoot once per turn but you get to find the shot and aim. Its like a beautiful mix of two genres, I am now very interested in it.

Is this up right now? I'm really interested in this game after watching some video's.

I thought it would suck bad like that ATLUS game they put out on 360 recently that has the almost exact same setting. But it does look way better as it turns out and I need a PS2-style game like this of high quality.

MM9 is so awesome, I got to the final boss but ran out of E tanks, no way I could beat him without those, at least not yet.  I will redo the whole thing but now I have like a million E tanks, I will beat this game tonight. Its rather short, I guess MM2 is the same length, but the later ones were bigger. But it makes up for it with great level design, this game has some of the most unique levels in the series.

MOTHER GODDAMN FUCKERS ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

"By withholding code until a late stage then (be it through design or ineptitude), a PR can force a journalist to rely on marketing hype and information to fill the gaps in their knowledge of the game when writing copy. In this way, control of the critical reaction is shifted back to the PR in a subtle and (arguably) legitimate way."

I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE ANGRY AT ANYTHING IN THE VIDEOGAME INDUSTRY AS I AM ABOUT THIS FINALLY BEING MADE PUBLIC.

I WAS RIDICULED AND BASICALLY TOLD I WAS NUTS BY SOME OF THE MOST ELITIST, OBNOXIOUS, POSER, GAMER-LOSERS ON GAMESPOT WHEN I SUGGESTED THIS EXACT STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE DAY OF GTA IV!

"AS A GAME REVIEWER I AM OFFENDED BY THE SUGGESTION WE ARE INFLUENCED BY MARKETING AND PR OF THE BIG GAME COMPANIES... BLAH, BLAH." --SOME IDIOT OF THE GGD.

WELCOME TO REALITY BOYS, SUCKS DON'T IT? WHO WERE THE LOSERS AGAIN THAT WERE ARGUING WITH ME IN RAGS TOPIC? I'D LOVE TO DIGITALLY SHOVE THIS ARTICLE UP THEIR PUCKERED LITTLE BUNG-HOLES!

THERE ARE THOSE OF US THAT LOVE GAMING FOR GAMING SAKE, AND OTHERS WHO ARE SO ROMANCED BY HYPE THEY LET IT BECOME THEIR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHIES. SUCKERED BY MEDIA, BLINDED BY HYPE, THEY WOULDN'T KNOW A GOOD GAME 'TIL THEY WERE TOLD IT WAS GOOD BY EGM.

I'VE PLAYED A LIFETIME OF GAMES. THEY WAIT TO SEE SALES NUMBERS AND PAID ADVERTISEMENTS TO SEE WHAT THEIR GOTY SHOULD BE. I HAVE NEVER FELT SO JUSTIFIED AND FURIOUS AT THE SAME TIME ! ! !

I hereby nominate this for post of the year.

If it wasn't all caps I would too. Nyaa

They should probably just call it PSX Extremists as they are devoted solely to PlayStation games, hype and overly positive reviews. He was justifying his score of the game, but what I don't get was: If Rockstar was giving unfinished code versions of GTA IV to the big-boys to review, what the hell version did HE review? Either it was also an unfinished copy OR he was basing his score off of hype, PR press-releases or the other site's scores! There was NO WAY PSX Extreme got a final copy to review when sites like IGN or GameSpot didn't! There just wasn't enough time from the release of the finished version of the game to the posting of their review for it to be legitimate. So much for journalistic integrity...

I dunno, maybe you're being too harsh on some of these guys.

I'm aware most of the time that reviews are based on usually just a few hours playtime. It's a dead giveaway when they talk about the main campaign and ignore everything else. When I do a review I usually mention "from what I've seen so far". That's why I usually do a follow up as to how things are getting on if the experience changes. It's different for professionals, but at the same time games aren't films, they can't just sit through 2 hrs and have experienced everything. That said in GTA IVs case I saw nothing in the first few hours that would make me think it was a GOTY 10/10 title. But other people seem to love it to death. I get a general vibe that people find it more polished yet less fun than the older games.

Personally I'm finding it LESS polished than SA or VC. It reminds of GTA III, actually. A lot of new ideas, that aren't carried off completely. And things that should improve immersion, taking away from it due to inconsistency

So it's less polished and less fun. Actually it'd be a lot more fun if they had thought about some of what they were doing. For example, I stopped playing after an auto-save, and I was automatically put in an OLD safehouse. so now, with one hour to get to a job interivew, I've got to go all the way accross two islands. Needless to say I'm having trouble making it. Nyaa

>_<

This is one of the most frustrating GTAs, but not because it's hard, because there's a lot of stupid BS in it. I sucked at GTA VC and SA, in fact I found some of the missions to be quite a challenge, but it was funb ecause it was challenge, not stupid.

I'm still enjoying it a lot though, but it's got a shitload of annoying niggles.

I want World of Goo! Is it out on wii-ware in Aus, or just Yankyland?

"Suda51 wants motion-pluse in NMH2"

YES! Wait, I'll have to buy it. FFS.

I don't know but for me I tend to agree more often then not with reviews on the hyped big budget games, at least the ones I've played. Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto IV, Bioshock, and Mass Effect. Granted I sometimes lean .5 in either direction but I consider that kind of difference negligable. For instance I'd personally say GTAIV is a 9.5 game due to some issues with the multiplayer but other then that it was all excellent stuff and I never was a huge GTA fan. I think IV is the best in the franchise. Halo 3 is a game I consider a 10 as I found everything in that game superb. So for that game I think more places should have given it a 10.

My biggest problems come from reviews that I feel undercut a game and are overtly critical on it. For instance I found Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and Too Human to have been under-rated. LO is just an all around excellent game that I would consider a pretty easy 9. BD is a very good game marred by it's ease. I'd probably give it a decent 8 and not the 6 that GS gave it. The 5.5 that GS gave TH just seemed totally unfair. Personally I found the game highly enjoyable and every bit as addictive as Diablo 2. This game I felt was an 8.5.

Secret of Mana on the VC is excellent news and certainly wasn't something I was expecting from Square-Enix. I'm going to have to pick this game up asap. Nice to see things picking up again on the VC.

Mega Man 9 is pretty cool, MM2 is still my favourite in this series. I haven't put a whole lot of time into but have been plugging away on it here and there. I'm currently on the first stage in Wily's Castle. I thought he gave up his evil ways. Man I didn't see this plot twist coming. Nyaa

Oh yeah Selma Hayek is still hot.

I was also really disappointed with Operation Darkness, well at least from what I tried from the demo.

The Marvel vs. Capcom 2 news/rumour is awesome to see. I loved that game so being able to get it for the 360 is great. It'll be perfect to get me ready for a Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

I really hope that this "fun and entertainment > technology" is a coming trend standard for gaming.

Well those aren't necessarily mutually exclusive terms. Fun and entertaining are different things to different people.

That isn't what I meant (though I can easily see why someone would misunderstand) I meant that I hope that more companies countinue to make games with the formulas that match them best instead of simply upgrading them with tech to be "up to date" with technology.

I suppose that's the difference. I'm a big GTA fan, and currently I'm putting IV behind both VC and SA. A fair bit behind too. I've not finished III, though, but it's on my list.

Iga:

I searched Little Big Planet on IGN, and the first result was Little King's Story.

You'd better buy that shit so we get a Marvel vs Capcom 3.

Kinda stupid question here - why is it that Nintendo Voice Chat always gets a summary, but no other major gaming podcast does? Let alone the other IGN podcasts...

Suda51 wants MotionPlus in No More Heroes 2

And another prediction of mine turns out to be true.
