Where is Leo he can explain why this is so awesome better than most.
MM9 forever!!
No no, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, I just feel like its an unecessary step back, instead of a movement forward...Though I'm sure it will be a great game overall, I can't help but think that it will be all too familiar.
Step back? Not at all, it's just the type of art style and feel that they are going for. Megaman 9 is about as much of a step back as Black Sigil is for using the art and style from Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI. Beauty and art doesn't always have to be in the "cutting edge" department. Even in music that applys, I still would rather listen to the tunes from Final Fantasy VII in the games original soundtrack then the redone orchestra ones.

I don't know about you but I personally would like to see more games in the vein of the later N64 games like Banjo-Kazooie and Sin & Punishment or the Dreamcast games like Skies of Arcadia in all of their 640p glory.
There's something about games, be it the visual stimulus, be it the audio stimulus, be it the tactile stimulus, that etches impressions on our brains that tend to linger more than anything else.
You have songs that you love today, that you forget by next month. You keep pictures to remind you of trips, because after you return home, back to the daily grind, you tend to forget. You pull out the album and reminisce when you are feeling blue.
There's something about a great game though. Hearing the familiar music. Seeing the bright colors. Getting the adreniline rush as you pound the buttons or die for the eightieth time and just stop yourself from flinging your controllers. Everything combined makes things that much more memorable.
When you are feeling such strong emotions and your body and mind are in such sublime synch, it just creates a reality unlike any other. It snaps you completely into the present, gives you a sort of a high. You just don't FEEL that everyday. When you do, you start to associate other things around you to that moment. Who are you playing the game with? What season is it? Summer or Winter? What's your snack of choice while playing? Who DOESN'T have memories of staying up til the wee hours of the morning trying to finish a game/beat a boss/come out ahead in a multiplayer game with a bunch of buddies?
Games just bring you back to happier times. The Virtual Console has been a trip down memory lane for me as much as it's been a revisiting of some of the best moments of gaming history.
With all things there are some good and bad though. Some times things aren't as rosy as you remember them. Some games don't stand the test of time. Other games are timeless, but sometimes familiarity breeds contempt. You love the game, but you've played through it a million, billion times. It brings back great memories, but they're short lived cause it almost seems old to you now. There's nothing new to discover.
What if, though, you could have the best of both worlds? What if you could have a game that evokes the strongest of memories with sight and sound and familiar play... BUT IT'S REALLY BRAND NEW? I imagine my brain and body being absolutely fooled into saying: "Ah. This is just like that June day sooo many years ago when I got my coveted copy of MegaMan 2 in the mail! I played that game to death! But... What's this?! Who's this Concrete Man? Who is this Splash Woman? That Dragon's bulgie eyes look awfully familiar! I need to jump on my Rush Jet and get the heck outta here! Arrrggghhh disappearing platforms! If I could get by them back then, I'll sure as hell NOT be stopped now...!" And so on and so on...
The perfect blending of perfect memories, bringing you back while soundly kicking your ass in the present. This game couldn't be done justice any other way. Sure they could have done it HD. Sure they could have added frames of animation. It just wouldn't have the same effect. Imagine Mario picking up coins and hearing "plunk" rather than "ching." Imagine Link opening a chest, holding up the compass, and hearing absolutely nothing! Doesn't seem right? Does it?
MegaMan had his heyday back on the 8-bit NES. It's only appropriate to have him return there. Would you rather play a game that kicks your ass in HD and reminds you how old you are... OR ...Would you rather have a game that kicks your ass old-school and reminds you of when you were a kid?
Yeah I am very found of MEGA-Man's oldschool artstyle. I first saw the screens at Neogaf as I was browsering there due to them getting news first usually. And....that site is seriously no different then Gamespot. I mean the only difference is that there are more posters and that it seems that there is an even stronger of a limit of experssion then Gamespot has.
That's it, it's time for a hero, I am going to Neogaf......this Fall!
While I'll no doubt get a kick of nostalgia and likely enjoy playing MM9 a part of me would still prefer to get my butt kicked with old-school Mega Man gameplay only with glorious HD graphics. In fact if the game were to indeed appear on XBLA/PSN we'd get the best of both worlds because typically those versions of classic games come with option of playing the game with the original graphics or enhanced graphics.
^^^They could've made breath taking 2D graphics on the Wii. Just look at Oboro Muramasa Youtoden or to a lesser extent Warioland Shake the Dimension.
Also the options to play between original and updated usually lies in within retro titles on XBLA, and even then it doesn't always happen (Soul Calibur).

Oh yeah most definately they could have made a fantastic 2D game on the Wii and I wish they did. What I meant though I guess is that MM9 is what it is but if they do an XBLA/PSN version that I believe they'll pretty much have to make HD by those service's mandates. Yeah the games on XBLA don't always have both classic and enhanced modes but they usually have that feature. It could be due to size limitations although I'm not sure but I doubt MM9 would fall into the size limit category.

Yeah I see what you mean. Though it would be in the lowest HD resolution, I REALLY need to get good resolution for my games (it's more important then textures or pixel amount to me).
Anyway I got done with that "EPIC ARTICLE" I was writing. Go to the blog page or click this link. Now READ and COMMENT. Sorry but I spent a long ass time doing this.
MegaMan 9 looks absolutely JAW DROPPING. Look at the level of detail in his expressions as he unwillingly has to kill to survive. You can see that Mega really regrets what he's doing, but has no choice.
I'm another one of those guys who definitely does not want to go back to 8-bit graphics for anything. It lacks so much detail and looks, well, pixelated. Any strictly 2D games should be post-16-bit, so to speak, to appeal to me... unless it's like the 2D Metroids or Zeldas.

Why are we all gamers today?

Happy?
Yeah! MM9 Defense Force assemble! We're starting an armed insurrection right now, bitches!
Leo, that post is beyond awesome. Hats off to you.
You tell them Leo! I'm personally looking forward to Mega Man kicking my ass in 8 bit old school.

Excellent post, Leo! It really is the best of both worlds.
Now, I want a new Genesis-styled Sonic the Hedgehog, SNES-styled Starfox, and an SMS-styled Golden Axe Warrior game too.

Damn, my wii's been on its stomach all its life.
oh well i've not had any real problems (except in SSx and one time it wouldn't turn on or whatever) but maybe I should put it on its side.
It's interesting, cause apparently the PS2's disc drive didn't cope to well with being on its side. Oh well.
STOP THE FREAKING PRESSES!!!
