I can’t blame EA, I suppose.  I’m sure their track record on Nintendo systems were crap.  It would be great to have some portable mp games though.

GameCube Zelda-like Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy   is on its way to PC

Ah, 2003. The year of the low budget, good but not great, forever lasting cult classic. But also Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Today, I finished a game. It was a game that starred a hero of legend that's been around since the 8-bit days. It was an action adventure that featured a great tree and a powerful woman that fought back against a force that threatened to destroy a kingdom she protected for centuries. You gathered resources, you went on many quests. It was one of this year's best games. Without looking at the Completed Games topic, do you know which game I am talking about?

Xbox One X comes hand in hand with massive downloads

Want to play Gears of War 4 in 4K? Brace yourself for 103GB.

If you plan on downloading games onto your fancy new Xbox One X, be ready for some truly gargantuan file sizes.

1

Like watching paint dry.

I've been downloading games on our office Xbox One X for a couple of weeks now, and some of the sizes for games I've seen are truly eye-watering.

Fuelled by 4K Xbox One X updates, game downloads on Microsoft's new console push - and sometimes exceed - 100GB.

The Coalition's Gears of War 4, for example, weighs in at a whopping 103GB.

343's Halo 5 is a 98.26GB without its 4K update, which adds another 15.10GB on top.

Turn 10's racing game Forza 7 is 95.65GB.

Remedy's Quantum Break is a 83.7GB download. If you want to download the optional TV show that can be a part of the game, you're looking at an extra 75.61GB. Ouch.

2

That's our Xbox One X pretty much full now.

Now, many of these games were already pretty big on the bog standard Xbox One. Halo 5 for example, has always been a hefty file size. But those who plan to buy an Xbox One X and want to re-download games they already own that now have Xbox One X enhancement updates, or buy new games for the first time, should brace themselves.

Then there's the storage issue. The Xbox One X comes with 1TB of storage. You're looking at nine or so games before you fill up your console. Then it's external hard-drive time.

Of course, with native 4K gaming now an established reality on console, game file sizes will only get bigger and bigger.

I wonder if the internet will make as large a kerfuffle over this as it did over the Switch's 32Gig of storage.

Take Twos Switch games make you download a shit ton even if you buy it physical. 13gb for LA Noire I think and 24gb for NBA 2k18.

So now XBOX will make you download huge amounts of data too. So games data size have grown so big they can't even fit on the disc media like Blu-rays anymore.

People seem to be ok with 100Gig downloads taking up a tenth of the HDD on XboneX. Damn hypocrites!

I do hope Rocksteady is working on Superman.  I couldn’t think of another Dev that could pull it off though it’s hard to imagine how a Superman game could work.

People are ok with it because it’s “cutting edge.”

For me it’s not so much the size of the games and how much space it takes up on storage, I don’t really mind buying more storage space for the systems, it’s just that I don’t particularly care for them splitting the games up between both physical and digital. When I purchase a game on physical format I want the whole game available on that format, I don’t want to have download the rest of that game in order to play it. That would require developers to use larger carts or multiple discs to ship their games on.

I would prefer multiple discs. What happens in the future when the servers go down and you've lost access to your games because you can no longer access the files you need online to run them anymore?

Yup that’s what I want as well. Multiple discs for Xbox One and PS4 games and larger memory cards for Switch games.
