Something else I didn't like about the smash bros demo:  the tunder bolt indicating you were being hit so hard you had no hope of recovering from it.  Takes away that last bit of desperate hope, that somehow, you could still make it back.  Now it's just 'ok, I'm done for' and you sit back awaiting your respawn.

Super Smash Bros for 3DS review round-up

  • CVG: 9/10 - After years of lazy publishers fobbing off handhelds with crap versions of AAA console games, trust Nintendo to show them how it's done. It shrinks down the Wii U game without compromising it, while instilling it with its own distinct identity. If anything, it's the Wii U version that should be feeling nervous. Super Smash Bros for 3DS is a triumph.
  • GamesRadar: 6/10 - A highly polished iteration of Smash Bros. that plays great on its own. But when you're afflicted by latency problems in local multiplayer, you'll suddenly become painfully aware of the 3DS version's critical shortcomings.
  • GamesBeat: 97/100 - You can never tell how great a fighting game will really be until the public has time to master it, but Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has everything it needs to finally get the competitive community to move on from Melee. The new characters are excellent, and the gameplay is smooth, fast, and exciting.
  • Game Informer: 9.25/10 - We all know the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. is on the horizon, but the 3DS version is more than something to keep you busy until then. It's a must-play for Smash fans.
  • VideoGamer: 9/10 - Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is certainly a surprise package. Packing a substantial amount of content and the same fantastic gameplay as its home console siblings, it gives the forthcoming Wii U version an awful lot to live up to.
  • Polygon: 9/10 - Super Smash Bros. 3DS hasn't been compressed as much as it has been tailored. And as unlikely as it may be, it fits like a glove.
  • GameSpot: 8/10 - I found so much raw joy in my time with Super Smash Bros. 3DS. And even though I played to the point where I was literally in pain, I didn't have to keep playing Smash Bros. 3DS. I wanted to.
  • Joystiq: 4.5/5 - When Nintendo is firing on all cylinders, it creates the sort of games that other companies only wish they could put together, and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is the perfect example of that sterling pedigree.
  • Destructoid: 9/10 - A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage to what is a supreme title.
  • IGN: 8.8/10 - Smash 3DS is impressive and, for the most part, feels right at home on 3DS. The multitude of ways to play and awesome customization gave me many reasons to keep fighting - and I've been at it for more than 45 hours already.
  • ShackNews: 8/10 - It's as close as Nintendo can possibly get towards packing in the addictive pleasure of the console versions onto its 3DS handheld. Fans couldn't ask for a better appetizer to the Wii U version set to hit later this year.
  • NintendoLife: 9/10 - As the wealth of modes, stages, characters and other features prove, this isn't a quick release intended to tide over players until the Wii U version comes along. Rather, it delivers more than a 3DS game should feasibly be able to do, so much so that it'll be enjoyed alongside its HD counterpart and in its own right for years to come.

Having launched in Japan on September 13, the 3DS Super Smash Bros release date is October 3 in America and Europe

Hello to everyone in the Americas. This is Eiji Aonuma, the Supervisor of Hyrule Warriors. The game is finally available in North America!

Did you get a chance to play it yet? Hyrule Warriors is a fast-paced Dynasty Warriors game filled with unique elements from The Legend of Zelda series. This game was crafted by the developers at Koei Tecmo Games, who are also fans of the Zelda series, so Zelda fans should have a fun time playing this too. In addition to our hero, Link, you can play as a variety of characters like Princess Zelda, Impa, and Midna, who makes an appearance in The Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess, so I hope you'll try them out.

Beyond that, additional downloadable content will become available in Hyrule Warriors after the game launches. The first DLC pack, Master Quest Pack, will be released on October 16. The details of that pack will be revealed soon, but today, let me give you a sneak peak at an additional weapon.

The new weapon added through the Master Quest Pack is...Epona! Some of you may be surprised to hear that Epona is a "weapon", but in Hyrule Warriors, she can team up with Link to attack enemies! I already had a chance to try out Epona in the game. By riding Epona, I was able to blow heards of enemies away and gallop swiftly through the fields, and I had a lot of fun trying out this re-imagined version of her in Hyrule Warriors. In the Zelda series, players never had a chance to tackle bosses by galloping around them with Epona like in Hyrule Warriors, so I hope fans will enjoy playing as Zelda characters in a game with a different type of action than you typically find in the original series.

In addition to Epona, the DLC will include other content as well, like new scenarios and costumes that will further expand your gaming experience. If you're interested, please check it out in the Nintendo eShop. I hope these download packs will help deepen and expand your adventures in Hyrule Warriors.

Oh, right. It's literally a GameCube controller with a Wii U adapter; I assume USB. In which case, BRING ON the PC drivers!

PDP?

How the mighty have fallen.  Nintendo, once the highest authority in the field of creating versatile ergonomic controllers, choose to resort to a decade old design as the norm for how their new game should be played.

Personally I found the Wiimote/nunchuck combination to be more than up to the task.

Yeah I agree, the Wiimote nunchuck combo worked just fine for me. But this is really just Nintendo's latest attempt to reach out to the hardcore base. There's a group of people who believe that the GC controller was the pinnacle of controller and Smash shouldn't be played on anything but one. Personally I hated the damned controller. Never felt right in my hands at all. Oh well, I've already determined my preferences are out in left field so I'm probably wrong.

....Dreamcast controller was still shit though, and no one will ever convince me otherwise.

MCV - Where are the next generation experiences?

Once upon a time a new generation of consoles brought with it a major step forward in game content.

From Super Mario World to Super Mario 64 and Grand Theft Auto III to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, each generation has brought with it something that has forever transformed how video games are played and built.

Almost 12 months into the life of PS4 and Xbox One, I can’t help but wonder: when are those platforms going to get those types of redefining experiences?

Titanfall, Watch Dogs and Destiny were heralded as next-gen proof of concepts. But they aren’t. Call of Duty with jet packs, GTA with hacking, Halo as an MMO... these are not things that were ‘impossible’ on the previous consoles. Hell, they’re even available on the previous consoles. And they hold up quite nicely.

Too easily, ’new’ games chase the same trends. This Christmas racing fans will be truly spoilt for choice in terms of amazing-looking driving games. Well, they are spoiled if they want nothing but an ‘open world socially-connected racing experience’. What I would give for a racing game on a track that allowed for four-player split-screen multiplayer. Now that would be a real social gaming experience, even if it would cost £135 in extra controllers (but retailers wouldn’t be sniffy about that...).

The new machines need more variety, content and inspiration. So far, my oft-repeated ‘best thing’ about the new consoles is the fact I can update my PS4 in the background without waiting.

This may be a contradictory thing for the editor of MCV to write. Xbox and PlayStation have both broken their own records this year. Titanfall, Watch Dogs and Destiny are entirely new brands that are now firmly established. The latter two proved to the world that a new IP can be as powerful and successful as a major sequel. In a business sense, those games have performed wonderfully.

But for all the sales and the corporate back slapping, these new machines still need to prove themselves. There’s no room for complacency. This year, PS4 and Xbox One have had it all their own way. There’s no Wii-style game changer to upset their progress. But next year? Well, that’s when the Steam Machines arrive, that’s when virtual reality becomes a reality... and who knows, maybe Nintendo will drop one of those once-a-decade wild cards. And that’s not to mention the inevitable progress of tablet tech and streaming platforms.

The sales charts suggest that console gaming is back on top of the world. Yet the current range of content makes you wonder if it’s doing enough to stay there.

Technically it's a Game & Warior stage. Looks incredible. That is from Gamer and was the best game of Game & Warrior too just in case anyone wanted my opinion on that.... again.

Smash Bros is not a hardcore game.  I can see how Nintendo would market an adapter to allow you to play it with the GC controller, but to include it in a bundle is sending a wholely different message to consumers.

Also, I love the GC controller.  The ergonomics of the GC controller are simply unmatched, even to this day.

Smash has a very dedicated hardcore audience, even though the game itself has a wide appeal. Look at all the EVO stuff, and the tournament that Nintendo did with Smash at E3. This part of their big push to win back the hardcore audience. Sure the bundle is an option, but I have a feeling it's not going to be pushed down consumers throats like the Wii Wheel was. Guess I have to wait until it gets into the stores to determine that though. For now I just see it as another option. Plus those GC controllers are 10+ years old. Those things don't last forever. If people want them, it's safe to say it's time to make more.

Art of balance isn't all that great either.  It baffles me that they're porting this to anything and everything as if it's the pinnacle of the Wiiware catalogue.
