Shadow of Mordor (9.3) AMAZING! Review
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor stands out from other open-world action games by putting a great new layer on top of the trail that Batman blazed. ign.com impressions phantom_leo
That is your light source. Once that's depleted you're in the dark. It doesn't completely stop you from progressing, but it's much tougher to figure out what's going on around you. You find items to refill it I believe, and you can upgrade it as the game goes on.

You'll get water tank upgrades too. Those will definitely make things easier. But keep upgrading the pick-axe too. Deeper in the mine you'll come across pitfalls and traps and such, and using the drill too much is a surefire way to go too quickly and end up dying.
Behold, the most vicious army in Hyrule Warriors!
Don't be afraid to fight back, Link!
