The only recent Metal Gear game was Revengeance, right? Which wasn't a stealth game. The last stealth game in the series was Metal Gear Solid 4 which I would describe as being "seen" much longer than some time ago. Nevertheless, they're saying it's better stealth than MGS4, but probably not 3? But they make a point of writing Metal Gear, not Metal Gear Solid...which implies that they're saying it has more dynamic, satisfying stealth gameplay than Revengeance. In which case: lol.

since MGS4 you have had Metal Gear Solid Mobile, Metal Gear Solid Touch and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Clearly Mr. Shoemacher was including those in his analysis.

Been playing the Wonderfull 101.  I'm getting slightly better at it, but I'm not too impressed with the gameplay.  Probably because I'm still not at a good enough level myself.

I don't buy that. I think that for a game as different as W101 at least half of the fault is improper tutorial or tutorial-like gameplay.

I didn't say I was blaiming myself for my lack of mastery, did I?  Nyaa

But yeah, this game is horrible at explaining itself.  They clunky and odd menu's don't help either.  So far I have abstained from reading anything too spoilerific in Leo's thread concerning the more advanced techniques.

Also, I am not versed in the way of the action game.  I think this is the first one I've ever played, but I don't feel like I'm expressing myself through combat, which I figured was the big draw.  It's just one big 'Simon says' of enemie types and attack patterns.  It looks impressive, but the most impressive stuff is scripted.  The only exception to that so far have been the battles with Vorkken, who has powers similar to yours.  Then again, I always like it best when I get to battle opponents that are similar to myself.

^For me, it was the same thing with Bayonetta.  I have the chops to be able to master it, but the game never really gave me a chance (say in the way Devil May Cry did explain itself).

I am cool with off-kilter games (like Little Kings Story or Pikmin) but they have to come at it with the understanding that they are stretching your gaming muscles from the usual FPS or 3PS and give more than the usual hand-holding. And to satisfy Foolz, make that hand-holding skippable.

With Platinum it's probably better if they don't try to explain things, though. Revengeance's tutorial lead to many people (including myself) not understanding how parry/counters (mechanics which the entire game is built around) worked properly because the tutorial was wrong in its instructions.

Strange you should mention LKS in that list.  I played it, but quickly got stuck on a 'boss'.  Didn't seem like a game that explained itself very well to me.

The immortui article is a good read.  At first you're oddly endeared by the boy's naive approach to things, and laugh with all the annecdotes:  Silvester tells me that Immortui's full development took "absolutely ages." It then turns out that it actually took about five months.

The article then ends with the notion that this one boy probably isn't a lone case, and that a whole new generation of kids is growing up programming and creating their own games.

I find that when you take the time to master it, it can be the most rewarding thing to play. You need to show it respect but at the same time make it yours. Then it tends to really milk the shit out of you until you are drained and totally satisfied.

Hm.  The finer details of it all seem to have gone missing in the mists of time.  Perhaps I just wasn't good at it and my memory refused to remember it as such.  I could return to the game of course, to have the truth of it, but alas, I lack the time to do so.

The reason I'm perplexed is because it was like being a student in class, they literally showed you a black board and chalk drawings of everything.

Witcher 3 preview at GS!

But The Witcher 3's lessons don't end after its tutorial. The world will continue to teach you how to live in it long afterward. "It takes around 40 minutes on horseback to go from north to south, galloping in a straight line," says Platkow-Gilewski. "On the way to that point, you will gain a lot of experience, and you will know how to handle the game." With this approach, Platkow-Gilewski says CD Projekt Red wants to make the game as accessible as possible, "but there will be no dumbing down."

For the latter, you don't necessarily need to accept a quest to kill a monster before you actually kill it. "You can start with killing the monster, collecting the trophy, and then looking for someone who would like to pay you for that," Platkow-Gilewski explains. "Maybe he will say, 'Get lost! I was not aware of that monster!' Maybe he will be really thankful that you saved him or his village."

CD Projekt Red prefers this approach to the easier crutch of filling its open world with collectibles or random item drops--aspects which Babiel views as a distraction. "If it's mindless, we don't like it," he says.

"We want to attract gamers, to keep them entertained by the story, not the fact that maybe this super good sword will drop," Platkow-Gilewski adds.

However, it is possible for Geralt to commit grand theft dinghy and steal a boat to explore the waters surrounding the world's various islands. CD Projekt Red hinted at several other aboveboard ways of obtaining water transportation--either by purchasing a boat, crafting one, or repairing a wreckage. Though boats can be used to explore the current island, they cannot be used to travel between regions. "Sometimes, on the sea, we have to use fast travel," says Platkow-Gilewski. "To reflect the real distance, you would have to travel for several hours in a boat. You would get bored." But water travel will not be without its own dangers; on the seas, Geralt may encounter mermaids who are dangerous in the water and can transform into hostile flying creatures. "They won't just hover somewhere next to you like in Baldur's Gate," says Platkow-Gilewski. "They will really fly around you, and they are really, really ugly."

CD Projekt Red has also overhauled the series' alchemy system, although Geralt won't be brewing any love potions. Platkow-Gilewski says that alchemy in The Witcher 2 was "not rewarding," because you had to somehow know in advance the type of enemies you were about to face in order to imbibe the right cocktail of magical buffs. "Now, you will have a few charges of the effect of the potion," Platkow-Gilewski continues. "It's not like you're drinking and have a certain period where you have to act really fast. You can use the specific effect of this potion when it's needed." CD Projekt Red believes this makes investing in the alchemy skill tree more viable than before, whilst the other two skill trees--sword mastery and magic--will be filled out with more active abilities rather than passive skills.
