You might want to put aside some time and play the demo. The demo contains 7 missions or so that are not included in the main game. For each mission you complete you'll get bonuses that will carry into the maingame. So its worth your while to actually play it. So far all the bonuses have just been extra items, but I can say that so far that unlike a lot of JRPGs, items are highly important. It's been very rare I didn't leave a battle without picking up some sort of status ailment.

Ah now we're talking. This is what get's me to play demos these days, stuff carrying over to the retail game. I will now find time to play this demo.

I finally got around to playing the Bravely Default demo. The praise seems warranted. The brave/default battle system does add quite a bit to combat, and it looks like it's going to be needed. Even the beginning battles have some genuine difficulty to them. Very easy to die in this game if you don't take each battle seriously. Very unusual philosophy for a JRPG these days.

Game handed my ass to me. Any tips?

So this was interesting

Well, I am certain that many of us remember what David Helgason from Unity said about Wii U having capabilities to do directx11 features on its own way and that it was also possible to support shader model 5.0.

Well, while doing some research on their Unity engine 4x I have discovered something interesting that backs up what David Helgason said

As you recall, compute shaders are listed in the wii u sdk specs taken from an early development kit, and well, things like multi threaded rendering (a new feature in directx11 and opengl 4.xx) have been confirmed thanks to project cars builds, but this info should prove to be even more interesting

Unity Homepage
http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/Manual/ComputeShaders.html

Compute Shaders

Compute Shaders are programs that run on the graphics card, outside of the normal rendering pipeline. They can be used for massively parallel GPGPU algorithms, or to accelerate parts of game rendering. In order to efficiently use them, often an in-depth knowledge of GPU architectures and parallel algorithms is needed; as well as knowledge of DirectCompute, OpenCL or CUDA.

Compute shaders in Unity are built on top of DirectX 11 DirectCompute technology and currently require Windows Vista or later and a GPU capable of Shader Model 5.0.

Compute shader assets

Similar to normal shaders, Compute Shaders are asset files in your project, with *.compute file extension. They are written in DirectX 11 style HLSL language, with minimal amount of #pragma compilation directives to indicate which functions to compile as compute shader kernels.

From the updates i have read around, wii u is receiving the Unithy 4 pro engine which will have all the features found in the Unity 4.x

- A special introductory program for new developers will be introduced

- Nintendo and Unity booth are right next to each other at GDC

- Tomorrow at 2pm there will be a new developments framework announced; supports web tech such as HTML and Javascript

Nintendo has two more sessions at GDC 2013 tomorrow. We’ll post details from both as we get them

There seems to be a game that will come to PC, Wii U and ps4 using the Unity 4 Engine
http://playeressence.com/dreamfall-chapters-the-longest-journey-confirmed-for-wii-u/

dreamfall chapters
Nintendo approached us last autumn, immediately after Dreamfall Chapters was announced – they were, in fact, the first console manufacturer to do so. At that point, however, we weren’t ready to make any commitments regarding engine and platforms, so we decided to wait. We got back in touch with Nintendo in late May of this year, and they were very interested in working with us.”

The studio has just received its first Wii U dev kit, and is still in the process of getting the game up and running on Wii U.
It is aiming to release Dreamfall Chapters on Nintendo’s home console complete with Gamepad functionality. “So far, they’ve been very helpful and supportive, and it’s been a painless and surprisingly rapid process."

Here you can confirm that the game is using Unity 4 (even from wikipedia you can confirm it)

Update #4

Feb 12, 2013

New screenshot of Riverwood

We have a brand new realtime, in-game screenshot for you today. This is from the western edges of Riverwood, a forest in the Northlands of Arcadia, not far from the capital city Marcuria. And it’s looking absolutely beautiful.

dreamfall chapters

We’ll be seeing much more of Riverwood in an upcoming video.
We’re using Unity 4 for Dreamfall Chapters, which allows us a level of detail and visual quality far beyond that of Dreamfall. With these tools, we can tell a richer, deeper story in a world that feels more magical, more alive, and more grounded.

And well, here you can check about the Wii U support for Compute Shaders

Wii U – Confirmed Specs from SDK & GPU Info

I did not post this back when the specs of the Wii U were leaked because it was still tagged as rumor at the time, but since then it has been confirmed by a known developer/programmer with SDK access that the spec sheet from the Wii U development kit was actually copied and pasted and leaked to the Internet 1 day before E3 and is in fact the truth from Nintendo. Keep in mind that these specs are based on earlierdev kits from late last year and are still missing some information from Nintendo (like the CPU clock frequencies and probably some unique features of the GPU) but are no longer speculation or rumor. The most recent dev kit for the Wii U is undoubtedly even more powerful than these specs show.

My head fucking HURTS man.

New Star Soccer 5 has delivered fun in spades. My guy (Findingnamesucks) has risen to stardom in the span of three years with Arsenal (stupid me for clicking on the first team that showed up before realizing finding a name for your player and registering it is a huge pain in the ass). I ahve achieved the highest FAME rating and my stats are all in the upper 8s, 9s and 10s. I have plenty of sponsorship contracts, own property, race horses and shit. We still haven't won a league but that's because everytime I get injured my dumbass team loses every match without me. We're closing the third year and asshole ManU is still leading by a few points so I don't think we'll catch up to them, but maybe we can nail the Cup and european League.

The game is developed by one dude, so it obviously has no licenses for the players. Hemce why the registering system is important. You basically load up the players that other people created for your team, so whle you might see a couple correct names, eventually you're going to have weird names in your starting eleven. My RB is a jolly chap named Turtle Man for example, and I wouldn't trade him for the real deal.

How so?

With Nintendo giving free devkits and free Unity and allowing self publishing, most Unity indie games are hitting the platform.

That's what I was thinking...just doesn't strike me as a game Nintendo would go out of their way to try and get. Its always been a very PC/Xbox oriented franchise with a very cult following. Love the games though, they are great.

Probably because not everyone may know what maxed PC version might mean exactly. Best just to explain the numerous enhancements along with a comparison video, much easy for more people to grasp.

Game handed my ass to me. Any tips?

Well I'm only halfway through the demo, so I'm not entirely sure I'm qualified to give tips. I will say that it's important to treat each battle with some respect and prepare for it. This is not a typical "press A to victory" jRPG. It's more along the lines of Earthbound where typical battles can get quick if one move goes wrong. You either have to grind a lot or think a lot. The shit I had to go through to defeat the first boss was insane. I had to come up with the kind of strategy that normally would be reserved for an end-game boss battle or a wickedly hard optional boss. I had to optimize equipment for individual characters, break out status changing magic spells, stat enhancement abilities, and strategic offense. Like I said, not the kind of things I'm used to doing in a jRPG. Very welcome change. I really hope all the game is like this.

The one simple tip I can give you is just make sure whatever your job class is, that you're optimally equiped for it. That means making sure whatever weapon and armor you're using are rated an A or S. It's easy to just look at stats and equip whatever gives you the highest boost to attack or defense since any job can use any equipment, but unless that rating is maxed out it won't really matter. That will definitely make a difference in battles.

Yeah Bravely Default is certainly tougher then your average JRPG. Played a bit of it and each battle needs to be taken seriously. I'm really enjoying it.

This was released in December in Europe and it's already becoming hard to find.  I should have got it on release.  JRPGs like that have a good chance of at least retaining their price (and oftentimes get much more expensive) for a very long time
