Yeah I mean wuuuuuuuuuuuuut? Bought two MS consoles, looking at buying a 3rd and they start doing this nonsense? Sony, price PS4 reasonably and have backwards compat please.

Update: Pennywise also discovered a pretty distinct developer leaving a highly implicit post on the matter:

Not in a great mood lately. Something major is coming my way that is going to change quite a bit in my life and I'm not looking forward to it. Not going to go into details but gaming wise I've been playing incredibly sporadically because of it. Lots of DL games, a handful of IoS games. Not much disc based at all. I don't think I am conciously avoiding BioShock, but maybe... who knows. Here's a few brief impressions of what I have been playing:

Terraria: Minecraft + Castlevania + Dark Souls + Final Fantasy sprites = One of the most addicting games of all time. Everything I was looking for in the 16-bit age that wouldn't have been possible back then.

Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien: Kinda like Pitfall meets Rhythm Heaven Fever. It is sooo strange hearing Charles Martinet do ANYTHING but Mario, but he narrates the game. Awesome Wii U game!

Toki Tori 2: Another Wii U game! Released just AFTER the launch window! Imagine that! Intriguing puzzle platformer meets HD (almost) Rayman quality graphics. Cute and wholly worthwhile!

Alien Hive: IoS match three puzzler where you evolve aliens. Not time based, you only have a set number of energy to make moves. One of those Free, but Pay for upgrades you can eventually earn in game, Games. Not sure it's possible without paying for content.

10000000: Another IoS game. Remind me to punch Rags in the gut for introducing this game to me. Utterly addicting. Another match 3 game, but the items you match are used by the tiny adventurer at the top of the screen to fight dragons, monsters, etc. Collect wood and stone for upgrading your home base. Survive as long as you are able. Achieve a High Score of 10000000 to earn your 'Freedom.' Don't play it if you become easily obsessed!

Battle Block Theater: From Behemoth games (Castle Crashers, Alien Hominid): Multiplayer (or Solo) platformer kinda in the same vein as Meat Boy. One of the FUNNIEST games EVER made!! Download the demo and try it out!!

Reading the UE4 PS4 vs PC Digital Foundry

Like I was trying to tell you before, Epic makes these tech demos on very expensive PC's that are even more powerful than next gen. And then these engines are essentially scaled back to consoles, sort of like how UE3 could run at 1080p 60FPS on good PCs but at 30 and 720p or sub-HD resolution on current gen. The infiltrator demo ran on 16gb of RAM and the GTX 680 is like 2-3 times more powerful than PS4?

DFoundry said:

It quickly becomes obvious that Epic hasn't just "ported" over its demo - it has extensively retooled certain elements, sometimes giving the impression of increased detail, sometimes falling short. On a technological level, it's clear that the more computationally expensive effects-work in the original PC version of the demo has been pared back - not surprising bearing in mind that the raw power of the GTX 680 is a significant leap beyond that offered by the new console generation.

Cutbacks aside, the overall impression from the PlayStation 4 showing is positive - in terms of detail, physics and effects.

So just how has the first UE4 tech demo transitioned across from PC to PS4? The biggest casualty is the omission of real-time global illumination, which produced some really impressive lighting in the original presentation - specifically in the way that light sources "bounce" off different materials. Dynamic generation of shadows also appears to be an issue, but we can't really read too much into that as positioning of the sun appears to have changed significantly from PC to PS4, altering the way the scenes are lit.

While the lack of real-time GI is a bit of a blow, we get the impression that this really heavy tech proved too much for the new console hardware (and bearing in mind the power of the PS4, an array of lower/mid-range PC graphics cards too) because it's been replaced with an enhanced solution of the "baked", pre-computed lighting system used in Unreal Engine 3: Lightmass.

Other effects have definitely been scaled back, but not to an extent that has much of an impact on the presentation - GPU particles are fewer in number, depth of field has been significantly retooled and isn't quite as impactful on PS4, while object-based motion blur appears to have been removed. The flowing lava effect had real depth and texture to it in the original PC version - on PS4, it's significantly flatter.

One curious aspect concerns the sweeping flyby outside of the Elemental Knight's fortress - this was one of the most spectacular aspects of the original demo, but it's been excised from the PS4 version, which in turn gets an extended outro sequence we didn't see on PC, where the physics and destruction tech really gets a thorough workout, culminating in the arrival of the fiery Elemental Knight's more icy nemesis.

On the one hand, seeing a year-old PC demo scaled down a tad to work on PlayStation 4 hardware probably isn't what console gamers would expect, and doesn't quite tally when other developers are talking about PS4 out-powering most PCs for years to come. But it is important to put all of this into context. The DirectX 11 API is very mature while the PS4 tools and APIs are still in their initial stages of development.

There's a good screenshot tool in the article where you can see close up the differences.

Still looks great, but I don't rate the engine, I prefer Luminous, Cryengine 3 etc. I don't think UE4 is that impressive compared to how UE3 was back in the day.

*goes back to playing 3DS Dreamcast graphics*

FOX uses a lighting technique known as linear-space lighting. In a way, its implementation is analogous to deferred rendering in that it takes a slightly longer route through the graphics pipeline in order to produce an effect which has significant advantages over its traditional counterpart.

In a nutshell, linear-space lighting takes into account the higher-than-natural light/dark contrast of the average monitor screen, and provides gamma correction to create more natural-looking lights and shadows. The hospital demo of MGS5 demonstrates this clearly: because the environment is fairly consistent in terms of both colour and brightness, the subtlety of FOX's shadowing is given centre-stage. The resultant lighting actually looks a little scaled back from many current-gen games because it isn't trying to conceal a lack of detail with in-your-face bloom or depth-of-field effects.

While linear-space lighting is largely responsible for the game's more subtle visual quality, there are many sub-components which go into the final lighting render.

PAX 2012

GDC 2013

In the same way that deferred rendering acts as a foundation for linear-space lighting, linear-space lighting in turn forms the support structure for the third and final strand of the FOX Engine's push toward photo-realism, which Kojima Productions has termed "physically-based rendering". While this may sound like heavyweight graphical terminology, all it means is rendering textures, models and materials using as much real-world data as is physically possible.

Don't let the simple explanation fool you, however. The practical implementation of this method of rendering involves a huge amount of work. Kojima Productions is taking the 'photo' aspect of photo-realism very seriously. Wherever possible the development team is using 3D photo capture, laser capture and motion capture to create assets that are as detailed and realistic as possible. In-game objects are photographed in real life from a wide range of angles, and then those photographs are compiled into a 3D model using a program called Photoscan.

The Witcher 3 will be a true next generation videogame as releasing the title on PS3 or 360 would compromise its ambition, CD Projekt has told us.

Several blockbuster titles including Destiny, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch Dogs have been confirmed as cross-gen releases, set to arrive on 360, PS3, PS4 and, presumably, the next Xbox. Not so The Witcher 3, which will be released on PS4, PC and – potentially – the next Xbox in 2014.

“We’ve clearly said we’ll be next-gen only,” CD Projekt’s co-founder and joint CEO Marcin Iwinski told us. “PC is a non-stop next-gen, that’s the cool thing about it. So I think a lot of people with big franchises and massive reach plans, they’ll have this dilemma, and I think there’ll be a lot of comprises made in the industry that might not necessarily be good for gamers.”

“We’re looking for triple-A experiences from the next-gen,” added Iwinski. “The Witcher 3 is so large… with a world bigger than Skyrim, and everything that we wanted to put inside it, there’s just no way that it would run on current-gen. We’d have to put a couple of years of development into [360 and PS3 versions], and then the experience would be so-so… we’d never do that.”

That is all.

More info plz

I refer you to everything that has been said about the game by just about everyone else that has played it since release.

Basically its all over the fuckin' place and everything feels just a LIIITLE bit off. There will be a cool part, followed by a long crappy part, followed by a cool part, etc. And the game really feels like it was made by 10 different developers.
