They could use the same style, just push it to the max with Cryengine and make it look like a high level Pixar movie. People always say you don't need power to make a "cartoony" game...bullshit. Have you seen how much better some of those Pixar flicks look than ANY game of a similar style?

Sometimes I wonder if they really are better. Is it just the perfectly smooth frame rate and complete lack of aliasing that makes us think it's that good? I've seen more detail in videogame graphics for sure.

Nintendo is going to have a fall conference to announce a fall launch day and price of the Wii U? Isn't that a bit late? Hey guys, thanks for coming...yeah the Wii U is coming out in 2 weeks for $300. Hope you're ready.

What are the game cases going to look like for the system? I hope they look cooler than the Wii cases.

They said it was a Sept conference then that was retracted or miscommunicated or something. Looks like a late Nov early december release so a Sept/Oct conference wouldn't be bad.

So in december I'm going to be playing Pikmin 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Xenoblade, and whatever other major launch games it has.

This is why I'm trying to finish as many games now as I can.

Body Harvest used the then-powerful Nintendo 64 hardware to create a 3-D open world game in which the player could run anywhere, jump into a number of different vehicles and run over pedestrians. Sound familiar? Reviewers at the time praised these unique aspects, but the Nintendo 64's small userbase rarely ventured beyond the comfort zone of Mario and Goldeneye.

A system with a 45 million strong userbase is "small"? Really? What does that make the Xbox and Gamecube userbases that were like HALF OF THAT?

Anyone else think that Pikmin 3 looked like Pikmin GC in HD?

This is Pikmin GC in HD

But if you zoom the camera way out it can still look decent:

This is Wii U:

Some interesting pics here

I've seen Pikmin 2 Wii, thought of getting it but I think they will do an HD download release on U. Is it worth getting now on disc?

I think the overlaying vegitation is the Wii U created assets, the ground textures are probably ported from when it was being made on Wii 1. In those screens above in the link one of the last pics has some nice detailed rock textures in the top part of the screen which jars with the low detail ground. I think they will fix the ground between now and release. The depth of field is pretty impressive. I think it looks pretty good when you look at it in detail, it's just not the sort of blow you away hype game for showing at a conference stage show.

Square-Enix - Luminous Engine is scalable

'we're probably not going to be bound to any particular platform'

Square Enix stunned E3 with a next-generation tech demo of its new Luminous Engine. But it's not just for next-generation games, says Square.

The Luminous Engine is hugely scalable, says Square's chief technical officer and Luminous demo producer Yoshihisa Hashimoto. So much so that it could power titles on current-gen systems and even mobiles and tablets.

"In the case of the Luminous Studio, we're probably not going to be bound to any particular platform," he told RPGSite when quizzed on scalability.

He went on to say that the engine caters to "PC already, probably PlayStation 3, Mobile, iPad tablets also browser and cloud as well. Not just next-gen - we can scale," he said.

Hashimoto also insisted that, with further optimisation, the impressive visuals shown in the demo should be possible in a real game even with the added strain of AI, physics and animations lumped on top.

"This time, a lot of power was expended on graphics because we wanted to show something really visually impressive. To be clear, it hasn't been optimized yet. So we should be able to optimize AI, graphics, the animation, audio all those things to slot together," he said.

"Of course we, the team, created this engine but definitely we are going to raise the bar for AI, animation, audio and physics everything.

"What we were using today for this demonstration it's of course high specification, but all the parts are also things readily available in the PC market right now. The graphics board you could probably buy without driving too far from here. It's very realistic that in the near future people can play a game with visuals of this quality."

Hashimoto did, however, suggest that the fidelity of next-gen Luminous games may require more storage space than a single Blu-ray disc can provide.

Shantae on Wii U? Wayforward said:

ND: Speaking of Shantae, is there anything coming down the pipeline that you can talk about?

Voldi: Um, I mean, I wish I could say something specific, but we are working on it. Like I would expect to see it on, you know, Wii U, it’s just, I don’t want to commit to a time because it always gets– even though we have been working on it, you know, like I said it gets pushed to the back burner, so originally we were hoping to have something for launch, but that’s clearly not going to happen. But yeah, Shantae is definitely in the works, and the last one, Risky’s Revenge, kind of left off on a down note, so we have to address that, right? So yeah, definitely more Shantae, for sure.

Shantae Wii U for anyone interested.
