Diablo is definitely that popular. The first two games were both extremely popular, and Diablo 2 was the fastest selling PC game of all time when it was released (I think it was eclipsed by Cataclysm). And Diablo 2 still moves copies today, which says a lot considering that the game was released a decade ago. Hell, I bought a copy of it last year, since my old copy has been long gone. Now if they hadn't gone a decade in between releases would it have sold that many copies? That's a different question.

After playing it, I really can't see why it took them so long to make another. Its awesome, but its...well, its DIABLO.

I think Blizzard has just gotten used to using World Of Warcraft as their money cushion. Kind of like Valve forgetting to make games now that they have STEAM. Unfortunately. Because IMO Blizzard are the Nintendo of PC gaming when they want to be.

If they make a World Of Starcraft...forget about it. They'll never make a normal game again.

I don't think it was a bad move taking a long time for a Diablo 3, though I'm not sure they needed to take quite that long. Between 2000 and 2005 there were plenty of Diablo clones out there like the Baulder's Gate games, Champions of Norrath, Bard's Tale, etc.  I'd say that genre needed a rest after that time. They probably could have moved a few years earlier on it like 2009 or 2010, but there's something to be said for how rabid the fans got waiting for it for long.  Bet they sold a lot of extra collectors editions.
