Kinda irrelevent to the point, though.
And MDK2 is a classic.
I assume you downloaded the WiiWare version then?
He must have thought that people would eat up MDK2 and he'd be rolling in cash. Instead no one bought it and he didn't get paid because of Nintendo's sucky limit. The limit is unfair and sucks monkey ass. But they guy just sounds ignorant:
Definition of ignorant:
1. Lacking education or knowledge.
2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake.
3. Unaware or uninformed.
"The 40MB size limit on WiiWare makes it very difficult to bring larger games to the platform. We had to go to war on MDK2 to get it to fit within the 40MB constraints, taking a 400 plus megabyte game and cutting it a full order of magnitude in size. We put a lot of effort into managing the compromises to get the game down in size and still keep the quality level high."
Seriously? Everyone upon everyone knows the file size limit on WiiWare, he took the decision to go ahead and try and compress everything, that's on him. If he didn't like it, he could go elsewere.
"We were not allowed to set the price, Nintendo set the pricing, telling us after a week it would be 1000 points."
Any monkey or idiot who owns a Wii knows the WiiWare games come at a set price, he knew this going into development. Anyone who owns a Wii knows the difference in price between 2D and 3D games and older and newer consoles. Any developer who went into WiiWare at a late stage expecting to be able to set the price and have promotions is blatantly ignorant of how the Wii Shop Channel has worked for the past 5 years.
"As well, there was never any discussion of doing a sale or promoting the title."
Any monkey or idiot who owns a Wii knows that WiiWare games don't come down in price or have special promotions he knew this going into development. And honestly, why would they do a special promotion on MDK2 and not for the hundred other WiiWare games out there? He wants special treatment? He didn't know that WiiWare games didn't have price cuts going into development? Was this guy living in a hole?
"This all contributed to a title we worked very hard on not getting any differentiation from other titles in the WiiWare store."
The same as any other game on WiiWare? Yet other games sold well. His game sold like crap, no one wants it, get over it. A game should differentiate itself. Do I think Nintendo's policy limit is fair? Fuck no, but he's venting at this point and getting far too much attention for it.
"The result was large disappointment with the platform"
The result was large disappointment with how his game sold.
“The result is a belief that Nintendo isn’t a good platform for developers. The Wii is a toy, not a console”
Bitter tears? He was all right with the console prior to and after developing for it, after his game fails to sell suddenly it's a toy not a console? Grow up.
Project X Zone
Nope, I doubt the WiiWare version is the best version as he claims it is. There's an HD version on PC that was reasonably tastefully done, and there's the original PC version which would also not be inferior. It's probably better than the Dreamcast version if you can use the wii-remote for aiming, though.
I'm not denying it was a poor decision to port it to WiiWare (it's only going to appeal to MDK fans, and few would be interested in playing it on Wii) or that he's being a bitter bore, but that doesn't mean that some of the things he's complaining about don't suck.
I think I made it to triple negative, yay.
It could be great if its going to play like the Goldeneye remake. But if its like any of the other Bond games, yeah fuck that shit. And GG I'm sure its coming to Wii U.
THQ is still fucked. 62 cents isn't really remarkable.
I'm not disagreeing with him, all I'm saying is that as a WiiWare dev he knew before hand the file size limit, most sensible devs choose not to publish on WiiWare if their game wont fit. He knows or should know the price structure beforehand and he knew about the payment policy before they started development. So all in all, he knew what he was getting into or should have known - hence he's been ignorant or negligent.
The 6000 unit payment policy is there to stop anyone from chucking any old shit on WiiWare -though there is still a ton of shit - it's meant to be there as a barrier, so devs think about the quality of their game and how confident they are of sales, before just putting something on the service and ripping consumers off.
It's weird because a Skyfall game was announced then retracted by an industry insider for Wii U. Was it this game or is it an exclusive, timed or otherwise?
Still this is Activision so I'm pretty sure they will spread their enourmous butts over whatever platform can handle the game(s).
I love what Eurocom did with Goldeneye and I want to see what this new game is like.
Wow The Witcher 2 once installed on 360 (15 gigs) looks so much better and plays much smoother! If you have the space install it !
Yeah I kind of look at that MDK2 dev as a schmuck. When you complain about existing policies that you agreed to before the fact you don't come out looking smart regardless of the situation. I think the only thing dumber is expecting a WiiWare game to move a lot of copies. Once upon a time WiiWare did sell pretty well. Hell, WiiWare sales of World of Goo were more than PC up until they started selling the PC version at the "name your own price." But once WiiWare grew into its once unfair reputation of a shovelware market those days ended, and any dev making a game exclusively for it was taking his livelihood in his own hands.
Sweet!
Dear Level-5,
Enough with the Professor Layton crap already. They're good games but give it a year to rest and give me another god damned Dark Cloud game already or I will unleash Mike Tyson on you to eat your babies.

Ok does anyone know how to do a quick save in the Witcher 2? I can't figure it out.
I beat Flower years ago, and I remember the two hardest levels were the field with the fallen power lines and the maze-like city, the latter only because it was very easy to backtrack without realizing it. I enjoyed it at first but after three or four times I got frustrated and finally managed to direct my petals in the right direction. Good for your daughter, I'd bet she enjoyed herself and didn't feel the silly "gamer frustration" that hit me.
