So in the Epic article the interesting thing I read was about the storage medium for games, discs are too slow.

They say solid state is best but obviously very expensive, this interested me because of the rumour that Nextbox is solid state and has no disc drive.

Last week a report claimed the next Xbox will not include a disc drive. Instead, it will apparently use solid state storage.


Sweeney said such a move would benefit the performance of games, but cautioned against the cost of releasing games on a solid state drive.


"You see that spinning optical media has about 250 milliseconds of latency," he said. "If you want to get some bits from somewhere else on the disc, you have to wait a quarter of a second for the little mechanical elements to move the head around so they can read it. A hard-disc is about 20 times faster than that, and a solid state drive is tens of thousands of times faster. It's basically the speed of electrons that limits the solid state drive.

"One of the major things a game needs to do in a world with a large environment and lots of graphical resources is continually go out and pull new textures and sounds and 3D models from different places in the storage media. So solid state drives have a really dramatic advantage from that point of view. It would certainly be desirable for the working storage to be solid state or some other extremely fast medium. But that's a completely separate question from distribution media. Solid state drive costs are fairly expensive."


He added: "You couldn't ship a game on a cartridge that's a solid state drive itself. It would terribly prohibitive economically. You could potentially envision downloading a game from the internet to a solid state drive, or taking it off of optical media and installing it on a solid state drive.


"There are lots of ways to get a game onto optimal media for playing the game. If you look at decoupling the distribution media, whether it's internet or storage from the streaming medium (which is used during gameplay), you see far more flexibility than just in current console games. If all you have is a spinning drive, you just have to go out, load a resource, and wait for a drive to go out and do its mechanical work."

So maybe MS has worked a way to get a huge, cheap solid state hard drive?

Its a possibility. I figured that when the next generation arrived MS would do everything they could not to go with BluRay after the whole format war went so badly for them.

Wii U uses proprietry 25gb discs, so I assumed MS would do something similar.

Me and a friend of mine were drivin' down the road, going to lunch. two lane road, with a red light coming up. This peurto rican guy is behind us...right on our ass. We're slowing down as we approach said red light, which isn't even half a football field away. Now, this dude hits the gas and flys in front of us, speeds up to the red light then natually has to stop.

Me and my friend pull up laughing behind him saying great job beating us the the light. So this tough guy gets mad that we are laughing at him and starts throwing his hands up in his car. We continue to laugh. Light turns green...he hits the gas then jacks his breaks on, my buddy who is driving bumps into him. So now I'm thinking we are going to have to beat this guy, he's obviously looking for a fight and insane since its two onto one.

He gets out of his truck, me and my buddy are still sitting in the car laughing at him. The guy starts mouthing off and he stairs at his bumper.

My friend starts yelling "Are you fucking stupid? You cut US off so you could speed up to the red light, then jacked YOUR breaks on for no reason..the fuck is your problem?!" So the guy keeps mouthing off as my friend drives away yelling "Are you insane?" at him over and over.

Seriously, I've been seeing more and more lunatics like this on the roads lately. Talk about road rage... like we could have kicked the shit out of him if we wanted to. Idiot.

I got yelled at by a Welsh idiot motorcyclist. Crazy idiot blocks half the road with a freaking bike then complains about my position on the road.

I had more class than to react, but being yelled at by a Welsh accent was a surreal experience. I didn't know if I should laugh or get out and throw him off his bike. Guy was a fucking idiot.
