Extended audience simply means with people that did not play games and now are playing it, because games that are either made specifically for them (in this case Style Savvi, face trainer, Wii Fit kinda) or games that are not made specifically for them what that also appeals to them (Animal Crossing, Nintendogs and Mario).
The point is you have new people. If the next gen the audience stays they they will be divided into a main group or become a main group. Girls have different taste than boys, even kids. How you divide the group is up to you. You could put them all in group and then make subgroups then divide them by age, gender or boobsize. That is arbitrary and depends and what you want to do with it.
Extended audience is not arbitrary for if you have bought in new members this means that the market as a whole has grown. Iwata did say that the main competitor was not just other games, but movies and books. The goals was to get videogames to be as common as movies and books, to get there more people need to play games. Hence why the extended audience is important.
Your position (supported by Nintendo's analysis of their audience) is that young females are a part of that extended group that was drawn in whereas I just see them as part of the child group. I don't think Nintendo did anything to significantly draw in more female children then they did to male children.
I think children get to graduate into the gamer group when they age and get to make their own purchasing decisions. In this next hand-held gen, they are retained, most likely by Nintendo due to price and brand loyalty.
But I'm prone to concede any of these points, as I have had zero (not even observational through family or friends) contact with children since I ceased being one.
Fiesty VGpress today.
Escape from LA! It's much more like that. Maybe that's a Rambo rip-off, though.

Aspro, girls are a bigger percentage than before and the overal number of gamers (the DS outsold all other previous handhelds) is also bigger, so we have lots of new girl gamers that were not there before. And not all girl gamers could go in the child group, the DS also is popular among the older girls a.k.a. women.

That Spiderwoman costume is the best....E-Var!
Look at them child bearing hips.
Now I do actually know that Spider-Woman. My wife is actually rooming with her at DragonCon next month. FYI she's actually lost weight since this picture.
This is also her:
No need to lose weight.
Just lose your wife and you are set.
Man Rowan Atkinson(Blackadder Mr. Bean) is awesome. While some of us can't even afford a car, he manages to crash his McLaren F1 twice! TWICE! What a pimp!
Check him out in Top Gear, they even talk about his McLaren F1.
Ehhh, she's married. Happily married at that. And no she didn't need to lose any weight, but try telling any woman that and see how convinced she is.
I don't like it.
Tone it down, bitches.
