http://www.zeldainformer.com/2011/04/rumor-retro-studios-big-new-project-cafe-title-is-eternal-darkness-2.html:

So, by word of mouth, we have been told Retro Studios next big title for Project Café is, in fact, Eternal Darkness 2

. For those unaware, Eternal Darkness was one of the single best games ever created in the GameCube era, a survival horror game that always warranted a sequel... but never got one. To get this out of the way, our source (who shall remain unnamed) works for a very large gaming studio and happens to have a friend or two working for Nintendo in Retro Studios. Oftentimes friends from different studios will share small tidbits of information about upcoming titles, and even go as far as to get each other into beta testing for games. However, we don't have to just rely on this source to really provide weight behind this (I stress, this is a rumor, and not a fact). How is this even possible? What about Silicon Knights?

Our friends over at Kotaku confirmed last year that Nintendo had renewed the Eternal Darkness trademark, which of course sparked curiosity into whether or not we would see a second game. This is important to note, because since Nintendo owns the trademark it is likely that Silicon Knights (who at the time of creating the game was a second party developer for Nintendo, under contract and licensed by them to create Eternal Darkness) would not have to be the people to create the second game. It would also be a clear explanation for why a sequel was never made, especially after Silicon Knights flopped hard on the Xbox with Too Human. By the way, history lesson: Silicon Knights broke off their contract with Nintendo to create one with Microsoft, and naturally Nintendo wasn't going to allow a franchise tag they own to go over to the competition. This, naturally, would explain why a sequel never happened.

In addition, Nintendo has never been one to really dive into the survival horror series themselves, let alone in the style of Eternal Darkness. So naturally, they wouldn't have had a studio they thought they could trust to bring the name back. That is, of course, until their very own Retro Studios began to prove itself. The Metroid Prime Trilogy is arguably the best the Metroid series has to offer. Its atmosphere is the sort of thing that would convert well into a new Eternal Darkness. So not only does it logically make sense for Nintendo to turn to Retro to create the game, Nintendo themselves decided to renew the name just last year, ironically around the time that it is likely Donkey Kong Country Returns was just wrapping up its final development stages.

While this will remain a rumor until we get some official confirmation from Nintendo, wouldn't it be just glorious to have Retro Studios behind this title? They certainly won't turn back to Silicon Knights after they broke off the contract with Nintendo back in the mid 2000s after just two games, which likely created a bit of tension between the two parties. In addition, Silicon Knights' latest game offerings have been less than stellar, and they recently laid off a stunning 26 developers. In the end, it would appear Nintendo may not think Silicon Knights (of which Nintendo does still own some stock) is fit to do a sequel. But Retro? That's a whole 'nother can of worms

LOL.

So anyway, if you want to look like Travis Touchdown whilst also shielding your eyes from the harmful effects of 3DS you can buy these.

Conduit 2 impressions from Effect said:

Single player is significantly better then the first game I feel. Still linear, what FPS isn't but the presentation is a ton better. The areas are more open and varied and so far it looks like there are multiple paths at times (at least in the area I'm in now) and it does take some time to get through the levels. There are multiple objectives that lead into one another. I think I'm on mission

The ASE acts more like Samus' visor in the Metroid Prime series now. A nice bit of scannable objects, documents, blue prints (which unlock weapons in multiplayer so you don't have to buy them), etc. You get money for scanning items that can be used in mulitplayer. The scanned objects give entries ala Metroid Prime as well and are broken up into various categories.

Did High Voltage have some contest where people send in pictures to get them into the game? Some of the missing persons documents have pictures of real people. If they did something like they would be a good place to put them.

The game looks great. I need to go back and finish up Goldeneye 007 to determine which of the two look better. The game's frame rate seems to be locked at 30 or maybe a bit higher most of the time. There are moments where it noticeably changes (gets higher and hits 60 I think or something like that) and then goes back to normal. I had that happen to me a LOT in Infamous which is why I recognized it. 3v3 (assuming 6 player FFA too) in multiplayer constantly has a higher frame rate as well.

They did a good job with the character models, especially the enemy armors. Though I'd like to see more of Andromeda. Happy

I've done some online play but not sure how to properly word what I feel about it just yet. It's mostly positive for the most part.

above the lowest setting but I increased it to "Elevated which might be considered "Normal". Interesting to see enemies flipping over tables or soda machines for cover. Trying to flank you. Some of the more armored enemies will simply rush to melee you or hit you with shotguns at point blank range. These are pain to take down. It's nice to see their armor get shot up and glow due to being constantly fired up upon. Then there are the snipers that seem to acquire you pretty quickly if you get to close to their area. Curious as to how aggressive they'll give on the highest settings. Also no infinite spawning either. Once you clear an area it's cleared. I was glad this was the case in GoldenEye and I'm glad it's the case here. Though there are still the Drudge wall pods you have to take out. Those are still annoying. Not just one on the wall but there could be 4 or 5 in the area you have to take out. Rushing into areas simply seem like an easy way to die. Though being catious has still gotten me killed a few times. Charged shots hurt.

The game I feel deserves to do well. It's a far better game then the original in every way sans the lack of voice acting from Keven Sorbo. It's worth a gamers time.

I played some multiplayer games and then jumped into single player. Right now they have double EXP for those who purchased the game. There are already level 20+ folks out there and they're hard as hell to kill with my little level 4 character. Still, it was fun, but dying sucks because the wait time to respawn takes a while. Unless some revives you. I don't have a headset, so I haven't been able to try that out. Still, it was fun, but I really suck at multiplayer FPS games, so I'm not really one to judge. It's smooth, fast, and pretty fun so far.

The single player is cool for the most part. I had to stop because I have to go to work, but also because I reached a point where I'm stuck and can't go any further and I'm not sure if it's a glitch or if there's something I'm supposed to do. The one thing I don't like is the voice of Ford. Ugh. Couldn't they get someone closer to the original guy? I just want to mute him. The overall story flow is better than the first game and the addition of cutscenes is nice. I'm only on the first mission, so I can't say much more than that. I'll definitely be jumping back into it when I get back from work.

It's a good game so far, and in many ways better than the first.

Edit: I fraggin' love the smoothness of the pointer in this game. After playing Black Ops yesterday, I can see why people would want to use the classic controller. It's nice and smooth in the Conduit 2.

Finally. Something everyone on this site can enjoy.

Studio Ghibli Raises Its Devil Horns In The Air!!!

Someone has gone and made a compilation of Studio Ghibli theme songs played by metal bands

Coroner Records is really proud to announce the upcoming release of a new album of extreme metal covers of Studio Ghibli songs entitled "Princess Ghibli".

The project called "Imaginary Flying Machines" (from the title of a short film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, which is exclusively shown daily at the Ghibli Museum) puts together bands from Europe and Japan (Disarmonia Mundi, Blood Stain Child, Destrage, Living Corpse and Neroargento) that reinterpret 12 very famous songs taken from the films produced by Studio Ghibli, bringing the soundtracks that have made dream many fans of Miyazaki in a new musical dimension, more aggressive and faster, without ever losing the melody and the magical atmospheres typical of the original versions.

The album has been recorded, produced and mixed by Ettore Rigotti at The Metal House Studio (Disarmonia Mundi, Destrage, Slowmotion Apocalypse, Stigma, etc...) and mastered by Alessandro Vanara.

The album will be released on April 13th Worldwide by Coroner Records (except for Japan, where is released by Media Factory - Overlap Record) in Digital Download on iTunes, Amazon and the most important digital distributors.

You will find the complete track list after the break as well as a short video announcement from the label for the project. Ghibli has never been this brutal before! And I love it!

Why the hell would Retro be making Eternal Darkness 2? I don't believe it. The game didn't sell good enough for Nintendo to have Retro do that over an original game or a Zelda sequel, or Metroid for that matter. I could definitely see Nintendo working with Silicon Knights on a sequel, but not Retro.

In all fairness, not a whole lot did sell on the Gamecube. Still the game has one hell of a reputation and one that keeps on growing. Articles still get written today explaining the concept and talking about how great it was. And Nintendo has used Retro to bring back franchises that had either disappeared or fallen off the tracks. Eternal Darkness does sort of fit that model. Still it would almost be a big risk assigning them a game that is stll technically just a cult hit. I like the idea though, but I also doubt it'll happen. I'll just cross my fingers that it'll happen.

Or maybe Nintendo will use this opportunity to finally bring back Balloon Fight.

I just finished reading this new Miyamoto's interview on gameblog.fr (link: http://www.gameblog.fr/interview_293...iew-integrale), and I found a few interesting tidbits:

* Already posted by Nirolak (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=428019) is that Mario 3DS will be coming this year

* He's busy working on a new Zelda, a new Mario, a new Mario Kart on 3DS, and a new Pikmin

* There are new AR titles being prepared for the 3DS (no details on whether these are retail games or downloadable)

* They celebrated Mario's 25th anniversary last year, and they intend to do the same this year for Link. He says there will be many products/merchandising (not sure about the translation on this, is he talking about games or CD/books?)
* About the "project cafe" rumors, he said they are always working on new hardware. He also added "where there's smoke there's fire", but that "you shouldn't believe everything you read [on the internet]".

* Some boring stuff about smartphone gaming

* He's thinking about entrusting the younger teams with traditional characters such as Mario and Zelda, so he can get more time to work for himself

They will also post a video interview later today, I'll try to see if there's anything interesting in it.

Tasty nugget of info:

Nintendoy spent a rather huge amount in 2007, $370 million to be exact, after spending $103 million in 2006 (and only $34 million in 2003). Several sites considered that fact newsworthy back then. Yet it seems like they spent another $370 million in 2008, $430 million in 2009, and $489 million in 2010. Almost $2 billion in R&D since the launch of the Wii.

So what happened was this Mega man legends 3 switched from DS to 3DS?

I only because it might give me some hope for Ace Prosecutor 2 being moved onto 3DS. Sad

Wait, pay for Prototype and the whatsit?

Please SEGA, do this for Shenmue 3. I will pay.

What I don't like about the idea is that its really a game Silicon Knights should make, as its an area they excel at. Retro Studios are not proven Story tellers  and that's one of the main things behind Eternal Darkness. Not saying it couldn't be great, but it just seems odd compared to what they COULD be doing.

Substantial news, this is. Spent this kind of money on R&D Nintendo until now has not.
