Yeah I agree. I'm on a shit computer, so I can't post much, but the last few pages have been great.
WTF?
It's Hamsta time!!!
It was indeed one of the best OGB games. That and Super Mario Land, Tetris and Sword of Hope (the latter to a much lesser extent). I played the shit out of M2.
and Mario Picross. and Donkey Kong, and Wario Land 1-3 (though 3 was GBC game), and Link's Awakening

Metroid Prime in 2002 sold like 850,000 copies in the first month, and went on to sell like 1.5 million or some shit. At that time, those were huge numbers....only a select few franchises would sell 3+ million units, like Madden football. GTA was just becoming a gigantic franchise, as was Halo which actually caught on very slowly but like Goldeneye on N64, stayed in the top 20 best selling games for years.
1 million copies is a very solid number.....not everything needs to sell 3 million copies or smash sales records. I believe Prime is the best selling Metroid game (likely because Nintendo actually marketed it and hyped it up to near Zelda levels) & for an exploration-based adventure game I doubt you could find a more popular one, outside the Tomb Raider series.
Back then even 500,000 was considered solid. Look at Ninja Gaiden on Xbox: It was a 500,000 seller originally. Got hyped up to be a sales success.
For most games, 500,000K plus are good numbers. The only reason companies are becoming disappointed with anything under 1 million is because that's now the sales they need to recoup the money from modern budgets.
Right on.
As for my two cents, well if they had DROPPED the price on software by $10 instead of RAISING it by $10, I guarantee used games wouldn't be such a huge market. The vast majority of people over the past 5+ years have been in tough financial times & cannot afford to buy overpriced consoles PLUS $50 software, let alone $60 software. So the major games get bought in great numbers, while the less popular games get either bought used or pirated....which is another issue.
The used game market & the Pirate market are both backlashes against rising prices.
If new software was priced at $30 to $40, they would no doubt sell more of it, and double the amount of games would benefit. I really thought Nintendo would drop Wii software down to $40 at the very least. & I rmember last gen when Sony was selling ALL 1st-party games at $40, then Microsoft did that at the start of this generation. But greed stepped in. Foolish greed too, because I don't see how they're making more money by raising prices. You're just preventing more people from buying.
Oh, and another thing: NOT ALL GAMES ARE CREATED EQUAL!!!! Not every game is worth the same price. Maybe they should figure that out & start pricing software more based on value, quality, and length?

Most of my used games were purchased long after they were no longer being sold new. However, on occasion, if I can get a good deal on a newly released game at a used price say for more than $5 off, then I'll jump on it. If the game is in good condition, and the seller doesn't want it anymore, I see no problem. The seller gets some money for an item he doesn't want anymore, and I have the game I want and some extra cash in my pocket to buy dinner or something.
As far as the Wired article, developers and publishers equating the used game market with piracy is ludicrous. I don't believe for a second that buying used games is killing the gaming industry. If it is, then as Aspro said, it deserves to die.
Nope, the high ass software prices are killing the industry for anything but blockbuster releases.
I never buy used from Gamestop or similar stores...the games they sell used usually look like they went through WW2, and many times don't even play right.
But I've always found Ebay to be a great way to get used games & save some cash. With some looking, you can get mint condition games for cheaper than what Gamestop sells them for, many times.
Absolutely eBay! If you can look around you can find some rare games for comparable prices to those you find on eBay, and at EB here they have absolutely ridiculous sales now and then. They basically have the best and the worst prices (usually the worst) on all their stock, including used stuff.
Happy birthday Raven!
