Former Nintendo President Yamauchi Builds $83 Million Cancer Hospital Nintendo's fearsome ex-head honcho shows his softer side by bankrolling an ambitious cancer treatment facility in Kyoto.

A new cancer treatment center in Kyoto opened its doors on May 18 thanks to former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, who contributed nearly all of the 7.5 billion yen (about $83 million) used to build the 101 foot structure, which required special dispensation from the city to avoid violating building height regulations.

The eight floor, 82,000 square foot facility will have radiation oncology, internal medicine oncology, respiratory surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and urology departments. Patients will begin treatment at the center at the end of this month.

Yamauchi was the president of Nintendo for over 50 years and oversaw the company during its transformation from struggling toy maker to entertainment giant during the NES and SNES years.

Pretty cool.

Sony's Dyer: The PSP Has Problems, We're Fixing Them
As part of a new Gamasutra feature interview, The Sony Situation: SCEA's Rob Dyer Speaks, Sony's senior vice president of publisher relations for North America candidly admits the problems the PSP platfrom faces. While it still sells extremely well in Japan on a weekly basis, sales in the U.S. have fallen dramatically. More troubling is that software for system almost never shows up anywhere near the top of the charts. The last PSP release to enjoy a top 10 placement on the U.S. NPD Group chart was August 2009's Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Our analysis suggests that DS games currently outsell PSP titles 8 to 1. Alongside Japanese-developed upcoming hits like Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Square Enix's Final Fantasy Agito XIII, as well as the games of EA Sports -- a stalwart that is usually the last to abandon a dying system -- Dyer promises "A lot of the stuff that will be announced at E3 we're very excited about, because they are huge titles." Dyer freely admits that piracy has had a profound impact on the system: "That's been the biggest problem, no question about it. It's become a very difficult proposition to be profitable, given the piracy right now." However, he promises that Sony has developed technology which will "slow down the piracy in the first 30 to 60 days... There's some code that you can embed that we've been helping developers implement in order to get people at least to see a 60-day shelf life before it gets hacked and it shows up on BitTorrent." Moreover, he says, "the category shrunk inside of retail." However, Sony has turned its attention to that problem as well: "We're going to fix retail. First party has done a great job of getting some campaigns in place to do that." "We will have a good line-up this year. And hopefully, by virtue of that, we'll carry through to next year as well," says Dyer, defining the system's lifespan as lasting through 2011 -- which may chill speculation that Sony will announce the PSP 2 at E3 to counter Nintendo's 3DS, or in fact has any near-term plans to replace the system at all. I just read that article about Sony and the PSP.  Do you think the next version of the PSP is going to carry all the stigma that the current one now carries?  It got off to a great start 5 years ago, but it didn't take too long before piracy and a few hardware issues created enough problems that it gained it's "paperweight" description.  And most people haven't really spoken too highly of it for quite a while.

I know I've spoken very highly of it for the past few months, but that's mainly as a secondary system that's inexpensive with inexpensive games.  Lots of great stuff, but I honestly never would have bought anything for it at full price.  I just wonder if after the reputation that the PSP eventually gained and then followed by the underwhelming reception to the PSPgo, how much of an uphill battle does Sony have with the PSP2?
