And yes I know No More Heroes is niche too, but it's not niche AND black and white! That's nothing but a kiss of death.
So sad that that is true. OMG! What fate portends Pokemon B&W?!?
It worked, start the game and there was a menu, you pick which game you want. You get some really weird japanese or foreign games mixed in. The one I had was mostly old school arcade ports like Popeye, Pac-Man, Q-bert, I believe it had Paperboy and Marble Madness as well. I played those games a lot but never owned them I think they were in there. It had Super Mario Bros also but we had that already.
No one should be surprised by Red Steel 2 sales. It was predicted in the RS2 thread before the game got out and I even argued that the game should never been made at all. Not that it really matters. It will take at least 2 years to make a good sequel, by then the Super Wii is already out.
I saw this on Gaf. It is about the 3rd party situation on the Wii
No, it's more like a paradise with a transparent wall.
Every time they look past the wall, they see the best selling games of all time continue to sell and never leave. They want to be on the other side of that wall.
The door to cross that wall blends in with the transparent wall, so publishers just keep bumping against the wall.
Once in a few times, with some actual effort by feeling the ridges of the wall can they find the door and open it, but most just keep either complaining the wall is there or taking advice from people who think they know where the door is, just to splat against the wall at high speed.
Ebert once again on the games is not art attack:
Having once made the statement above, I have declined all opportunities to enlarge upon it or defend it. That seemed to be a fool's errand, especially given the volume of messages I receive urging me to play this game or that and recant the error of my ways. Nevertheless, I remain convinced that in principle, video games cannot be art. Perhaps it is foolish of me to say "never," because never, as Rick Wakeman informs us, is a long, long time. Let me just say that no video gamer now living will survive long enough to experience the medium as an art form...
But we could play all day with definitions, and find exceptions to every one. For example, I tend to think of art as usually the creation of one artist. Yet a cathedral is the work of many, and is it not art? One could think of it as countless individual works of art unified by a common purpose. Is not a tribal dance an artwork, yet the collaboration of a community? Yes, but but it reflects the work of individual choreographers. Everybody didn't start dancing all at once.
One obvious difference between art and games is that you can win a game. It has rules, points, objectives, and an outcome. Santiago might cite a immersive game without points or rules, but I would say then it ceases to be a game and becomes a representation of a story, a novel, a play, dance, a film. Those are things you cannot win; you can only experience them.
...Her next example is a game named "Braid" (above). This is a game "that explores our own relationship with our past...you encounter enemies and collect puzzle pieces, but there's one key difference...you can't die." You can go back in time and correct your mistakes. In chess, this is known as taking back a move, and negates the whole discipline of the game. Nor am I persuaded that I can learn about my own past by taking back my mistakes in a video game. She also admires a story told between the games levels, which exhibits prose on the level of a wordy fortune cookie.
...We come to Example 3, "Flower" (above). A run-down city apartment has a single flower on the sill, which leads the player into a natural landscape. The game is "about trying to find a balance between elements of urban and the natural." Nothing she shows from this game seemed of more than decorative interest on the level of a greeting card. Is the game scored? She doesn't say. Do you win if you're the first to find the balance between the urban and the natural? Can you control the flower? Does the game know what the ideal balance is?
...The three games she chooses as examples do not raise my hopes for a video game that will deserve my attention long enough to play it. They are, I regret to say, pathetic. I repeat: "No one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great poets, filmmakers, novelists and poets."
Of course I say he is entitled to his very WRONG opinion.
You evil, evil man.
As for Ebert:
I actually don't even like Ebert's writing much. He's fine when he likes a film if it's not a complex one, but if it is his reviews kinda read: "I didn't understand it, so it must be awesome."
And if he doesn't like a film that is complex his revie reads: "I didn't understand it, so it must suck."
He's fine when reviewing something like Avatar, though.
Will you guys stop talking about art?
At least give a definition of art before you start discussing what constitutes art. Seriously this useless discussion needs to stop!
Useless discussion is perfect for a podcast.
No
Agreed. Add another rule to the site. No porn, and no discussions of art as it relates to gaming.
what vader said should be made bold and quoted every time this argument is brought up. since the 80ies video games have been there along with all the other mediums when it comes to defining popular culture. to me that is what constitutes art. one doesn't have to find example of avant-guard/artsy farty games to prove they are art in the same way they don't have to do it for movies.
for me a room without lights and three arcade cabinets (Let's say space invaders, ms pac-man and donkey kong) side by side running the "insert coin" demos would make a wonderful piece for an art installation at the Tate Modern or the MOMA
