Look at that Gerstmann face.....good god. That is a face right there that just SCREAMS "I'm giving out controversial scores just to get a rise out of people". This is what began his trip into getting fired. Kane & Lynch was just the icing on the cake. That was a different situation but it all stemmed from him being one of the final reviews for many big games & quite obviously giving games a score of 5 to 10 points BELOW or ABOVE the average. Saw him do it so many times it was predictable. Of course, the irony is that Gamespot has now become KNOWN for doing that across the baord these days. cheeky

Nah man, Jeff is a lot of things, but a fraud isn't one of them. He just sincerely felt that way, plus that old score was hardly reflective of what he thought, that incremental system was just an algorithm that put the numbers together for him.

That and in a real medium with actual critics, and 8.8 is hardly a controversial score, it's totally fine.

Begone Gertsmann-gate denier!

The perfect game, docked a whole 1.2 points for not having orchestral score.  The Philistine.

I'm not agreeing nor disagreeing with Jeff, the man's taste in games is more or less his taste in food, junk. Wildly entertaining, but I would argue he's genuine, and not just "I dock things to be cool" or whatever, Jeff is just a classic curmudgeon.

About 9 hours in, two dungeons down and I have died more times in that time than I have in all 3D zeldas post MM combined. The 4x damage mode is awesome, finally getting hit matters, combine that with no heart drops in the game world and its an actual challenge at times. Need to manage potions well. Finding heart containers matters now.

So the game is beautiful in terms of quality of picture, everything is clean and nice to look at. The art style is still bland, the overworld filled with empty areas with terrible textures. The game would could have used some extra decorations or something. That said the game is just as amazing as it was. I am loosing myself in it, there is so much to do, it is a steady stream of gameplay situations, constantly shifting, constantly doing new stuff. Yeah there is the odd backtracking or traveling section here or there but for the most part there is always something interesting to do. The dungeons are superb, I havent even gotten to the good ones yet. Combat is actually decent when it matters, I enjoy the pacing of this combat more than say Witcher 3.

There are a few issues though, Epona's controls have changed for the worse. There seems to be no diagonal input now so moving her left or right is a pain. It clearly feels worse than the original TP. I miss wiimote controls, aiming while moving was a godsend in certain parts, I feel so limited without it. They adjusted a few things to make it easier like the tears and the boring intro. This puzzle had the leaves removed, now its super obvious.

Still I trade all that for it looking as it does. What a game, its such a shame other compaines rarely attempt a game like this. What is holding this back is the production values and old elements of gaming like constant load screens, those game stopping camera transitions that are awkward now. It feels like a game with a presentation stuck from the old days, even though it is a 10 year old game, it feels older than a 10 year old game. I really hope this new zelda nails those aspects becuase I have no worries about the gameplay, I know it will put others to shame.

What is your favorite TP boss battle?  I have a huge fondness for Stallord.  That was so fun.

Played about 2 or 3 hours of this myself, soooooo good playing this game with clear and more detailed graphics. I thought that the controls for Epona felt more stiff then I had remembered them.

Wait 4x damage? That better not be the amiibo thing for the game.

";">Plus if you have the ganon amiibo you can activate super hard mode which doubles the damage even further meaning 4x damage. "

Lame.

I put this in just to see how it looked and ended up playing for two hours. Looks gorgeous, wish they had revamped the character models more though and put fur shading on the wolf.

Love this game, perfect balance between leading you by the nose and letting you work things out for yourself. Also the character models and cutscenes are more expressive than most modern games. Just those little moments between characters, Nintendo could make some pretty great CGI movies if they were ever bothered to.

The third dungeon kicked my ass. I had to leave a dungeon to get potions, I haven't had to do that since the original. That mini boss was hell, the little shit tadpoles were taking off a heart each. The issue is every time you did you are left with three hearts so if you have no potion you are fucked.

Hmm, found it a slog to get to the Death Mountain part. Just like originally when I played it in 2006, the lead up, forest temple, village and the trek to Death Mountain is just too familiar and something of a slog. If I recall properly it  gets better after the second or third dungeon.

What's up with Epona horse controls? Geesh.

Finished the 4th dungeon and spent nearly 3 hours this morning just exploring the world and doing mini games. This is basically my favorite part of the whole game, the moment where you have enough items to really explore the world. When there are a bunch of mini games open to enjoy at your leisure. When you have a vast open world to go where you want, do I go fishing, do I do the flying bird mini game, do I attempt the chicken float game, oh do I attempt to get that chest secretly tucked away there, do I go after poes, do I search for hidden mini dungeons. That is magical to me, that is what I love, I love the dungeons too but I equally love exploring (its why MM is my favorite).

WVW69i_fZlI1KhdzD8

Look at that, you enter this new area and it has chests in different corners, how do you reach them? What new things will I find to do in this area. There are no side quest markers or anything, you arent running to dots on a marked map. You just walk around and let the game happen. Its a different phiosophty to say Witcher 3 which also had a giant world but things were mostly just in your way, highlighed, with a marker on the map. Thats not discovery. I knew I wasnt going to find a water river rapids mini game as I explored the witcher kingdom. Once that feeling of surprise is gone from a game and you know it is very structured, you are going to do this and only this kind of stuff, it loses the magic for me.

WVW69i_fYMMApPFadO

The difficulty increase has been great. I am thinking tactically, always keeping my potions stocked. Finding new items matters now. Finding a new bottle is a godsend. Unlocking a fairy fountain is a momentous moment because now I have a place to gain health. Getting heart pieces is essential rather than just something to do. The flip side is it can get frustrating. I never died in this game so I didnt know but some of the checkpoints are annoying. Especially some really scripted gameplay segment, you reach the very end but die, guess what start it all over again from the start. Also getting stuck in a dungeon with three hearts is annoying, pretty much one hit kills you. But hey the trade off is upgrading matters and I like that.

This game is a still a masterpiece. It still delivers a one of a kind gaming experience that only the franchise is able to deliver and I cannot wait for the next one.

Just started the 3rd dungeon.

Funnily, although the game was criticised at the time for its size, it's still a pretty huge overworld and has tons of density of gameplay, especially with those dungeons. It also just has that charm and magic Nintendo is able to imbue into its games. Feels really special when once every 5 years or so we get one of these games.

100 is done, got all bugs, all ghosts, all hearts, all fish, all items. All done on super hard. All I have left to do is the wolf cave which sucks and a few stamps. Oh and to actually beat it which I will do tonight. Still an amazing game. The hard mode was good, not great. Once you have a bunch of potions you still have enough life to survive but it does make it feel closer to old Zeldas than modern Zeldas where no potion is even needed.
