I was thinking about Zelda and the various hooks it's used for each subsequent sequel and trying to decide what was my favourite game mechanic.

GTA car jacking is right up there in the list, I love this. Why confine me to one vehicle when I can choose from a whole city wide list of cars with different steering and physics and weight, speed etc.

The other two of my favourites are both Zelda creations. Horseback riding in Ocarina was just so much fun and then Twilight Princess did it better and expanded the concept with horseback combat.

My other favourite gamehook is the Bombers Notebook in Majora's mask. Which is like having an event schedule of every character in the town and working out how to complete all those time based quests.

there's a lot i like about metroid prime, like the visor switching, the morph ball ... obtaining abilities giving you access to previously unavailable areas etc

also drug trafficking in chinatown wars was so addictive!

Goundhog day hook from Majora. That was so awesome everyone had his/her own life and did his/her own thing.

Galaxy's gravity-planet mechanic! Where do you move from 3d? Well you move to more 3D. Instead of having flat levels with mountain, you have round square, donot, bean like planets, etc. You can run and jump upside down, inside out, die by falling upwards, etc. There are so many possibilities, which explains why we are getting Galaxy 2.

Telekinetic gameplay from Second Sight and Eledees! I love having that power. I had so much fun messing around with people in Second Sight. Eledeed, thanks to the Wiimote, has even more possibilities, let's hope that Crystal Bearers fulfils some of my telekinetic fantasies.

very good post, though i haven't played MM i agree with everything else.  a good example of telekinesis power is in bioshock, there some very nice violent uses of it in that context.  but i hear you about how it'r really cool to do it with the wiimote

Elebits controls, yeah that has to be high up. I just wish the game was more polished and that there were more games that used it. At the moment it's a great feature no one else has taken advantage of and no one has perfected.

Definitely the way the visor is used in Metroid Prime, scanning, switching weapons, energy display.  Perfect.

Using your ocarina for various things such as time travel, gaining access to new areas, warping, etc.

Super Mario RPG's timed hits.  It's an extra dimension to turned-based RPGs.

Many things everyone else has listed, plus:

Grappling Hooks! (Funny you should ask the question in the way that you did! I loves me my grappling hooks!)

Character Models that display weapons and armors.

Auto-Maps.

Loot Collection games. (Baldur's Gate, Champions of Norrath, Phantasy Star Online.)

Colored Lighting.

Realistic Physics.

Male Characters with tremendous bouncing bulges akin to the DOA ladies.

(Last one more of a request than an actual, existing game play hook.)  WinkWink

Eating dots in a maze while being chased by enemies, who can also be eaten for a short time after eating one of four special powerups. And it's still fun nearly 30 years later. Grinning
