Yeah but Tengen didn't own the copyright from the creator of Tetris. Nintendo was the one that got the rights from Alexey Pajitnov. Tengen thought they had the rights when they released it but they didn't.
Tengen Tetris isn't that rare, and a loose cart goes for $60-80 on Ebay. There's a bunch in that price range on there now. It probably could be had for cheaper if you shop around.
EDIT: I just watched a video comparison of Nintendo's Tetris to Tengen Tetris. Tengen's looks much closer to the arcade, but I actually prefer Nintendo's verion; the graphics and sound are more appealing to me.
I liked the music for Nintendo's version better as well, but I did prefer the arcade presentation of Tengen's version.
On that note, I really wish we could get the NES version of Tetris for the Wii U. Their lack of Tetris in the eShop is quite sad.
I like the sound of Nintendo's Tetris. I'm really picky when it comes to the graphics for Tetris I prefer how Nintendo had it with the blocks segmented into four seperate pieces. I don't like when they have the blocks all one piece. But that could be because that was the first version of Tetris I had ever played and I expect all versions of Tetris to be similar.
The Tetris that the original gameboy launched with is still my favourite version of tetris and one of my favourite games of all time
I loved that game to death. My younger brain couldn't comprehend the idea of a NES in my pocket and I never expected to get so addicted to a "Puzzle" game. They really didn't even exist prior to that. It literally gave birth to a genre that is still going strong today. Textbook definition of pick up and play simplicity and utterly perfect for obsessive compulsive neat freaks like I tend to be. I can't tell you how many GameBoys, Color GameBoys and portable Nintendo systems I've given to people based on Tetris alone. So many happy memories of Tetris competitions with friends and family members. Timeless classic.
It had me in something of a trance. At various times during the day (or night because it happened as I was asleep too) I would be playing Tetris in my head, visualizing the whole pit and moving and rotating falling pieces with my mind. And it was usually impossibly hard - back to the wall - scenaria, nothing easy or relaxing.
I will never forget the first time I played so well that I launched a missile when I finished! One of my most perfect WTF moments in my gaming life
I just bought the original GB Tetris on 3DS eShop thanks to you, Bugsy. I haven't played this version since the early 90's, and that was only on GB demo stations. I just played a couple rounds, and it's a LOT more difficult than Tetris DS! No ghost pieces. No part hold/swapping. No infinite spin! I can play Tetris DS for 20 -30 minutes easy, but I could not last more than 5 minutes on the GB version! I'm enjoying it, though, lol!
I'm so proud of our Tetris discussion today.

I stopped playing Tetris when Tetris DS was released because of infinite spin. What bullshit.
You will get much better with a bit of practice. I remember I used to start at level 9 because I couldn't stand it being so slow to start with. I also loved playing the other mode where you have to complete a set number of lines at level 9 and with maximum handicap.
I was hardcore when I was young even if I never thought in those terms (until much later when I was no longer even close to hardcore)
Tetris DS was the first Tetris game I actually owned. I played it in the arcade and demo stations from time to time, but I never really got into it until the DS version. Heh, come to think of it, the only falling block puzzle game I played back in the day was Columns on my Sega Genesis.
I'm with Bugs. I disliked Infinite Spin and any other features that made the game a bit easier. Give me old school no-frills Tetris!!! Well, not just no-frills Tetris. I'd really like to see Tetrisphere on the VC, if by accident N64 games ever get released again.
Tetrisphere reminds me of 3-D Tetris on Virual Boy. I've seen videos of that, and it hurts my brain too.
Well they ultimately got in trouble for it and had to stop making the games. I think had they not made Tetris Nintendo would have left them alone, but Nintendo was in super dick mode back then and the second they released a better version of Tetris they unleashed the hounds. After that it was nothing but RBI Baseball.
