This is not a constant. The dollar is weak now compared to the Euro. So right now it would be very cheap for me to import stuff from the USA. Heck I usually buy stuff from blahdvd, because the British pound is cheap compared to the Euro.
It's always $1 = 1 Euro when they do the pricing but it's always shit, a change would be welcome.
Anyway, the DS launched at 150 Euros, this is quite the leap.
Also, the Euro is worse now compared to the dollar than it was in the past. It has been up to 1 Euro = $1.4 or $1.5 previously, recently it's hovering at $1.25 - $1.35 going by xe.com, although it's currently hiking upward. Not that pricing is set based on exchange rates (hence why importing can be cheap) but anyway.

Not saying it is wrong, but it is not a good comparison. The standard of living in some European countries is much higher than the USA, and some are lower so they get screwed extra hard. Taxes are different. Is it correct that in the USA the price is given without tax? In europe when is say €249,- you pay €249,-. And if you would study European porn, you would have known that Europeans are used to get screwed hard from behind. So nothing new here.

To answer your question, sales tax varies by state -- in some it is as high as 10%, some states don't have it at all. If you buy online there is no tax in most cases, depending on where you live.
As for what to play, I think I'll get it on faith and wait for Paper Mario, maybe get Ridge Racer if the reviews are good, as a tech demo. I can still use it as a big screen DS.

Yup, in California, for example the state sales tax is 8.25%, but on top of that you have county sales tax, so in LA county the total sales tax is 10.75%! But if you were in Nevada or Oregon (to name a couple), there is no sales tax at all, in others (like Georgia, it is as low as 4%).
You are only charged slaes tax online if the seller has a physical facility in that state (so companies like amazon assiduously avoid putting plants in large poplation states like California. Technically, you are supposed to declare it on your state tax submittal every year, but there is no enforcement and no-one does it.
In Holland the VAT is like 18%. But it is included in the price.
So if you order from Amazon you would not have to pay State tax (because they are in places with no sales tax), but you would have to declare it on your tax form! Correct? But no one does it, so you only pay country tax.
So what if you live abroad like you do? Do you have to pay state tax at all? How about country tax?
Well as long as you can get it for $250 it's a decent price, just buy online. EU price sucks regardless.

Importing within Europe means one has already payed VAT as it's included in the price. Paying VAT in one country means you are covered anywhere within the EU sinse there is a free trade agreement. If you import from the US or Hong Kong, you are charged for VAT (your country's %age) at customs.

In the US retailers don't include the tax in the ticket price, it is added at check-out. Because I have an US address in California, no sales tax is added to my total, because technically Amazon is not conducting the sale in California. Amazon has their largest west coast distribution center in Nevada, where there is no sales tax, so the ship everything from there (ostensibly) so their customers can avoid paying sales tax.

Almost 100% correct. You don't pay county (not country) tax either same rules apply. A county would be called a "council" or "shire" in Australia, not sure what it would be called in EU. It's a region within a state.
I pay no sales taxes on my purchases, because as far as amazon knows I am in California (all my stuff is forwarded to me by a third party).
Under Australian law, I have to pay GST on any inbound shipments that exceed $1,000 AUD in value. So I always make sure I am under that when I have my bundle sent to me.
The EU pricing is shit, I hope it's just part of their "let's abuse early adopters willing to pay more" plan. Up to retailers? What is Nintendo on? They expect any random business to have a good grasp of economics? They'll all charge as much as they can and thus harm themselves and the product itself. Official price drop soon plz, it shouldn't have launched at more than 200 euros honestly and I'd hate to see the product underperform and thus enjoy a less prosperous life because of crap like this. I'd also hate to pay so much. What about the games?
