There are great series. There are established franchises. There are great sequels to lackluster games. There are lackluster sequels to incredible games. Forget about them all for a moment. I want to know about the OTHER games... What are THOSE games, you know, the ones that stand ALONE in your mind, unmatched, unique, possibly gone, but never forgotten...?

___________________________

I've sung its praises too many times to count, but here we go one more time. One part Metal Gear. One part Final Fantasy Tactics. One part Tomb Raider. Little bit of RPG. Little bit of action. Even some puzzle-solving...Tiny smidge of MMO sensibilities. Add an incredible Comic book style. An unprecedented Chain Combo system, thought provoking storyline and awesome post game content... add it ALLLL together, and you get a game that's STILL greater than the sum of its parts. Vagrant Story is one of THOSE games!

___________________________

You REALLY didn't think I wasn't going to mention this game, did you? This game caught me completely by surprise. It looked kinda pixely to me. I generally don't like games that factor "fashion" into the game-play. I normally am NOT thrilled by Nomura's stuff. Kingdom Hearts? I've played 'em, but they kinda make me cringe! ...Especially the pre-pubescent fans! Controlling two characters at once? HEAVY stylus usage during the gameplay...? Emo-ish, loner lead character. I thought to myself: "I'm probably going to hate this!" ...and for the first few hours, I did!

Then I relaxed to the game. Let the computer control the top-screen character 'til I got the rhythm of the game down. Started to get addicted to powering up the pins I liked using... Everything started to piece together. The music started to haunt my thoughts. The art-style grew on me more and more and more. It dawned on me that here was a game that used EVERY. SINGLE. FEATURE. of the DS! Touchscreen? Check! Microphone? Check! Sleep mode? Check! Tag-Mode? Check! Tap, slide, drag, flick, blow... close the DS... so many creative tricks to this game to be discovered. LIFE LESSONS to be discovered! If you play through this game in its entirety and don't have at least SOME of the story resonate with a small piece of your persona, you would have to be DEAD INSIDE!

...I could go on and on and on here... and I probably will later on in this topic --BUT-- those are just TWO of my picks! What are some of yours?

I am ashamed. Never played either. I would pick up a Vagrant Story copy in 1.2 seconds flat if I saw it, and the only reason I don't grab TWEWY is because I never warmed up to portable gaming.

I got Vagrant Story like 2 years ago, really cool game. There were some elements I didn't care for but it is a very unique interesting game.

One of the all time greats.

Now that's one I played...but couldn't finish. Camera work gets too frustrating.

Still my favorite JRPG...and favorite game...of all-time because it was so memorable in my mind.

I think this was one of the biggest surprises I've played recently. I was very addicted to this game.

I know this game didn't get very good reviews, but it was one of the best for me because I'm such a huge fan of Ghostbusters. Usually, license games are horrible but this one was very good. I posted this because I'm quite sure we'll never see another good Ghostbusters game like this ever again.

George Kamitani/VanillaWare games. No modern 3D technology, polygons, or CGI cut scenes, just pure hand-drawn masterpieces.

That boy needs therapy. Actually, he needs LKS.

Anyway, one for Steel:

River Raid had a sequel, though. River Raid II. I own it. Happy

Stop it.  I own it too, and it is inferior.  Just agree for once (look into your heart) that RR1 is better.

Not perfect by any means, but oozes with style and deserves its place here because it's nothing if not "one of a kind" ... truly

killer 7 bitches, bugsy out.

ps ask thank you for mentioning those vanillaware games

I have a feeling this will one day get a sequel, but for the time being is unique

Also though there will be a DS game soon "it's an offshoot"

and lest we forget

Sorry. I guess I misunderstood the point of this thread. I thought it was about great games that never got a sequel.

And I do agree with you on River Raid. Happy

Thought of another.  I know Ask and Robio love this too: Jeanne D' Arc

...and Raven, that's also the way I understand this thread.  games that never became a franchise, but maybe aspro meant river raid 2 was too obscure to count, i don't know

And let's not forget this beauty.  World of Goo is one of the few games in recent years that occupied my every thought during the time I was playing it, and for some time afterwards and it's truly one of a kind not just because it wasn't made into a franchise but also because there's nothing quite like it
