30 years ago today Japan entered the land of Hyrule for the first time. The US did not receive Zelda for another year or so but today is the official 30th anniversary of what I and many consider to be the greatest video game franchise of all time.

30 years ago we got this.

The golden cartridge, the game that is responsible the most for making me fall in love with video games. This game was easily my favorite of the NES era and it introduced me to all the core concepts I love above all in games.

Over the next 30 years this series continued to excel, bringing in new masterpieces, never faltering in quality. It revolutionized a genre twice, setting standards in how action adventure games should be played.

We started with this:

and now we are about to play this

Here is to another spectacular 30 years!

I played the original Zelda plenty of times but didn't own it.  But one day a friend offered me the Zelda cartridge for Skate or Die.  Best trade ever!

Just because you couldn't finish it doesn't mean it sucks.

Dude Zelda is still good. I did a play-through of it on the 3DS just a couple years ago and it is still a very solid game.

I have this on the 3DS now and may even get it on the Wii U VC. I want to play through it again in celebration of its birthday. Twilight Princess HD is nearly here and I'm very much looking forward to picking that up when it comes out. Long live Zelda! heart

I have it on the NES a long with Zelda 2.

I remember when I was younger my family used to rent it all the time from a local video rental place that doesn't exist anymore called M&M Video.

It's true.  I tried to like it when I played it on the gamecube anniversary disc.  Just couldn't.  But then some of the good people on this site pointed out that the original cartridge came with a big fold-out map which was necessary for playing the game as it included hints etc.

So in honour of the 30th anniversary I hereby declare that I will complete the original Zelda (map in hand) this year!!!  laugh

Oh man, now I remember your old avatar.

Zelda is okay. Would be better if they added a shotgun, sniper rifle and ATV.

That first game was definitely magic. That's a word that gets tossed around too much these days for things that really don't deserve it, but the original Zelda really WAS one of those magical games that instantly felt like something special and revolutionary.

That was a magical TIME period, as it was. The 80's....so much felt possible. Felt like you could accomplish anything with just a bit of creativity. Zelda to me is a shining example of why the 80's were amazing. Along with E.T., Iron Maiden, and Christie Brinkley.

Just the cover ALONE for Zelda, man, it was perfect. The Gold cart. The mysterious symbols on the artwork. What else can make a key, a heart, & a creature mean so much? It felt like the first game where you really could do whatever you wanted. Only limited by your imagination. I would get lost in that world for hours on end and it was nearly impossible to get me to stop playing. Still to this day, Zelda is pretty much the first game I think of when I think of the NES.
