I've always felt that music should be free and available to all.  So recently I've been browsing around many creative common apps on my iPod and I've been digging and found some really unique and good stuff.

Anyway I didn't see an official thread about this on GAF so I thought I might as well create one.

What is the purpose of this thread? -To spread awareness of the amount of free legal music out there as well of Creative Commons. And of course to share all of the music we enjoy.

What is Creative Commons? Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive  for the benefit of recipients or other creators. An easy to understand one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols, explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license. This simplicity distinguishes Creative Commons from an all-rights reserved copyright. Creative Commons was invented to create a more flexible copyright model, replacing "all rights reserved" with "some rights reserved"

Laymans terms - It's a type of copyright focusing on legally being able to share, and at many times build upon created work, as well as anything else that the creator(s) approve of.

More here.

Creative Commons Services

Jamendo

Website

iOS App
Android Marketplace

Quick Rundown - It's one of the most, if not the most, popular Creative Commons based music site. Stream and download free songs from over 20,000 different artists. Needless to say, the selection on this site is insane. It's also my personal favorite.

Free Music Archive

Website

Quick Rundown - Another Creative Commons based music site that is dedicated to providing free and legal music. Like Jamendo, you are able to both stream and download music legally. It may not have the amount of music Jamendo does, but it provides a clean and intuitive minimalistic interface.

CC Mixter

Website (Music Browser)

Quick Rundown - Unlike the previous two sites, this site was actually created and ran by Creative Commons. What makes this site unique is that not only does it place emphasis on streaming and downloading music, but remixing existing music as well.

Stereogum

Website (MP3 Section)

Quick Rundown - Unlike the other sites this isn't some type of hosting service. This is actually a music blog. What makes it so unique is that it has a section that tracks free music posted by artists on their website. They range from being small time artists to as world famous as M.I.A. and Kayne West. Wasn't sure if this belonged here since this is an "Independent' music thread, but due to the fact there are some small time artists as well as the site being so similar to the topic I felt like including it.

Music I want to share

Bloodthirsty Hippies - Behemoth *Sounds like...Great, Very Modern, Independent Rock with a hint of Electronic Synths*

Pornophonique - 8-bit lagerfeue *Sounds like...Scott Pilgrim's favorite band*

NanowaR - Other Bands Play, Nanowar Gay! *Sounds like...80's power/"hair" metal that parodies the genre*

Those are some recent artists I've been listening to. I have more but I want to encourage everyone to show and share their music as well.

So let's discuss and share away! Grinning

Use the edit button under the original post, and not the [EDIT] beside the topic title.  That appears to be a bug which I'll have to address later.

I have to be honest, I download shitloads of music.  A lot of it is illegal (but I personally think it's justifiable to download something to try and either buy or delete or if it's out of print), a lot of it is legal under creative commons etc.  Just off the top of my head here's a few good netlabels with heaps of great free music:

There's a lot more but i'm not sure if anyone else here has an interest in electronic music so I won't list any more here but let me know if there is interest

I download licensed music, but it's legal because of Canadian law.  I'm just getting my money's worth for the blank media levy.

I'm with this 100%.  There are heaps upon heaps of excellent artists who put no less effort and time (not to mention blood and guts) into their work and giving it for free.  The fact that it's legally free doesn't mean that it's substandard.
