Yeah ths does look tempting. My only concern is that they've packed so any mini-games into it that none of them will be any good.  Still they've taken Nintendo's idea of Woo-Hoo Island and have run with it.  Good for them. This is kind of what I saw Woo-Hoo evolving into. Hope it pans out.

They've got a good basic model if they stick with the mountains and activities of We Ski & Snowboard. The only weakness that game had is that it didn't offer enough structure. There wasn't much in the way of structured activities, it was just ... go ski. There were a few pseudo quests like take pictures and find specific people on the mountain but even those were done more as after-thoughts. I didn't have an issue with it, and kind of enjoyed it. Nice change of pace. But I think most gamers have a problem with having to make their own fun. Then again both of the We Ski games did pretty well and I don't think they required the core audience.

Anyway this one is on my list of games to buy.

Hey if a piece of crud like Sonic gets a thread, this deserves something.

Same concern as Robio.  Way too many activities for them to realistically have much (or any) depth.  Looks great and is great in theory but I am not too hopeful about the end result as it's a bit too ambitious

To tell you the truth I was posting pics and there were so many I thought it would be better in a thread.

There are over 50 activities, if only half of them are good it might be worth it. I can see myself enjoying 3 of them, the scuba stuff, mini golf and horse riding especially. Could be a fun timewaster.

This would be a runaway hit in my household. Even I would begrudgingly play it, pretending not to enjoy it.

Some previews I had to search for

Nintendo world report

Read the full preview but I will present a few bullet points

  • it tears the concept of an island resort filled with mini games right out of Nintendo's hands.
  • Go Vacation adds to the Wii _____ formula by tying mini-games together with an open world mechanic.Players can traverse four large resorts across various terrain types.
  • Tricks performed along the way to an event of choice will contribute to the unlocking of game modes and items.
  • Traversal of the environment appears to be fluid and enjoyable, though the world isn't tied to any sort of continuous narrative.
  • The 50 mini games are what Wii gamers will expect from a resort-centric party game.
  • Each mini-game looks to be executed with surprising competency.
  • The unlockable villas are a touted feature.
  • Players can earn the use of a vacation home, that can be decorated using items earned through successful play of the mini games or stylish traversal of the environments.

Go Vacation surprised me. While I would wait until after playing a retail copy to say if I think it is actually a good game, I can say that it appears to have everything one would want from a party game and even a little bit more.

This four-player, Motion Plus enabled party game launches soon.

Gamespot preview

Read the preview for details of the areas they saw and games they played

"Go Vacation is an open-world game that's simultaneously reminiscent of Wave Race 64, We Ski & Snowboard, Wii Sports, Pilotwings Resort, and a host of other games. While visiting the island on which Go Vacation is set, you can visit four distinct resorts (Marine, City, Mountain, and Snow) and take part in no fewer than 50 sporting activities"

"In addition to taking part in the numerous activities, you'll be free to explore Go Vacation's island any way you choose. You may want to rollerblade until you find an off-road truck, drive that truck to the ocean, climb out of it, and then scuba dive around the shoreline, for example. It all sounds very liberating, and furthermore, there will be hidden bonus items to search for in your travels. We look forward to finding some of those and bringing you more information on this promising game just as soon as we can get our hands on a copy of it."

Just read this, it's an important clarification:

"The new Go Vacation going to release in 2011 and it's going to have more than 100 sports in 50 categories."

Damnit there are two previews on the entire internet, all the others are the gamespot one recirculated to different outlets. Anyway these are your four resorts then:

Snow mountain

This has to be the city resort for sex and shopping

This must be the mountain resort for pilotwings type games and horse riding, quad biking etc

Which makes this the beach resort

There also appears to be some Endless Ocean type fish cataloging and underwater photo taking too

And if this is the case then in my eyes the game will be a hit. The most fun in Wii Sports Resort to me was just flying around the island looking for landmarks. In We Ski & Snowboard it was all aout just exploring the mountains. If they nailed this concept and added in more areas to explore in-depth, this will be awesome.

So I just saw a new Wii game by Namco and it's called Family Fishing. In Japan the games we know as We Ski were called Family Ski and this new game has a similar art style. It's made by Prope but looks like it fits in with the Family Ski and Go Vacation art style and engine.

So why should anyone be intersted? Well it comes with this fishing peripheral.

These whales are pretty rank

Fuuuu, Endless Ocean like encylopedia

It's like the Zelda fishing shop only 10X better

Competitions?

Dibs on the pirate suit

Shaders on the fish, on Wii. Damnit, Endless Ocean Arika are you seeing this?

Even the penguins have shaders? Damnit, Endless Ocean Arika are you seeing this?

Okay, some of the fish models actually better Endless Ocean 2

Many more pics at the link up top

The fishing game should have just been part of Go Vacation. It does look nice though, except for the characters, and Naka is involved in the development. How stupid is it that these cheapo mini game style casual titles have some of the nicest third party graphics and wide open environments on Wii? If only other developers had actually tried, instead of pretend it can just about handle plain empty corridors like 2 SNES taped together.

Yeah I don't know why or how but Namco seems to have teams making good visuals on their casual wii games. We Ski was a looker at times too, I still remember I had a screenshot thread for it here:

http://thevgpress.com/#!/forumtopics/we-ski-and-snowboard-screw-wii-fit-if-there-is-one-reason-to-own-a-balance-board-this-is-it-56k_114.html

Only Robio actually bought it, but he said it was good. I still want to know if you can control it using the stick.

Couple more pics and some info:

Details

Set on a resort island, you're free to explore the island

Sounds like it's as in depth as Go Vacation but only with extreme fishing. You free roam the island, which is completely different to the island in Go Vacation - I suppose you can't fish in the City and Snow resorts anyway.

More details at the link, it's made by Prope, but I swear it's using the We Ski engine and character models.

Famitsu via andriasang said:

Yuji Naka's Fishing Game Detailed

Sonic creator's studio is working on a unique new fishing game for Namco Bandai.

about Sonic and Nights creator Yuji Naka making a fishing game. Famitsu.com has a full look at the game today complete with a message from Naka himself.

Family Fishing is a Wii fishing title that's being developed by Yuji Naka's Prope studio and will be published by Namco Bandai on August 4. The game will be released software only at ¥5,040 and bundled with a fishing controller for ¥6,090. You can play the game without the fishing controller, of course.

There's more to Family Fishing than just fishing. Set on a resort island, you're free to explore the island, even using vehicles for transportation. You can run about collecting items, or take part in one of 20 mini games. The island has a message board where you'll be able to take on a variety of challenges. Adding variety to the exploration component is a time cycle which brings about background changes as you explore.

For the fishing part, you'll be able to exchange fish for points to purchase new tools. You can fish in some 15 locations, including the sea, rivers and lakes. As you advance in the game, new areas will come unlocked.

One of your goals is to build up an aquarium by collecting fish. You can expand this aquarium to earn money. You'll also be able to brag about your fishing skills to other players through a Wi-Fi Connection mode called Big Size Online Ranking.

Prope and Namco Bandai are packing Family Fishing with lots of content. You'll find over 1,000 items, ranging from clothing for your characters to actual fishing-related items. You'll find over 200 fish types, including octopuses and penguins.

So why is Yuji Naka making a fishing game? Naka delivered a message to Famitsu.com, but didn't explain why the sudden interest in a vastly different genre from what we're used to seeing. Instead, he noted that Prope is designing the game around a concept that is different from past fishing games. The game is set on a dream island where people who love to fish gather. You play as a traveler who's come to the island. You'll be able to take part in a variety of resort-style activities, including cruising, a submarine tour, and kayaking, said Naka.
