February update, looks like control is the game we have all played the most so far this year.

Just finished Super Mario 3D World on the Switch. Such a great game. The integration of the Wii U touch pad was thankfully pretty sparse in this game but the implementation they used to accommodate for it when playing docked was pretty nicely done. I don’t know how Nintendo keeps doing it with some of these long running franchises but their games are always top notch stuff that’s always impeccably polished and just always so much fun to play. 9/10

After about three months, I finally platinumed Days Gone. What a fantastic game and thank you to Robio for recommending it.  It's certainly not a perfect game.  It's repetitive with a lot of blah missions, but it was damn fun at times. The story was great, maybe even getting close to what you'd see in TLoU. Voice acting was phenomenal, especially Sam Witwer. The combat and driving mechanics also shine. It had just enough to entice me to keep playing well after finishing it in early February.

The absolute best thing about this game would be the hordes. The hordes are insane at times, with some groups in the hundreds. I remember that rush of spotting that first group in the trains. The rush quickly changed to fear when they spotted me and started to chase me. I went from being scared shitless when spotting them to searching through every cave to destroy them once I had the firepower to do so.  Wiping out a horde could actually take days if you had to re-supply your weapons. There's quite a few ways to tackle them.  You can lay out traps, throw bombs into their lair or even just try to shoot every damn one of them.  So good.

Glad you liked it. I thought it was a bit longer than it needed to be, but I didn't even mind some other repetitive missions. The rewards usually justified it. it's one of the few times I can honestly say I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

I will get around to it!

Been playing a bunch of VR junk because I have viveport which is basically VR gamepass. Most games are short so I am racking up those completed games, but they all feel like test projects. VR games just haven't evolved past the first year of experimentation. Even HL Alyx is just all those ideas super polished and with a great budget, the gameplay is standard VR fare. I wonder when the next big leap will be.

I also beat

2. Monster's Expedition - Tomas add it to the list boyo. Cute puzzle game. Hella cute. I think its funnest part is the working the puzzle part of the game? if that makes sense. Its more direct parallel isn't Swapper (maybe a nicer version of Stephen's Sausage Roll lol), but the feeling i have for the puzzles is similar.

3. Untitled Goose Game - It's a meme game

4. Ys 1 - cute, the bosses actually hint at how this battle system could be pretty fun, but they are all a bit too limited except for the last boss. Who if you play on PC, and on a 144 hz monitor, yeah cap that shit asap. That shit moves way too fast because of the increased framerate lol

Since then I have beaten

Donkey Kong Country - Fun fax, this was in fax my first video game as my first video game console was my dad purchasing me a Super Nintendo and we got it with DKC. Coming back all these years later has confirmed that this game is mid once you get over the soundtrack. Biggest things to be held against it are Rare jank (just odd hitboxes and collision detection) and a lot of the times it presents an obstacle course idea, but never fully or reasonably explores that idea. Something significantly better 8bit and 16bit era platformers were much better at doing, while just being all around more polished.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest - Mostly same as above, slightly better at exploring stuff, but some of those animal only levels are hot garbage.

Super Mario World - It's Super Mario World. It's pretty fucking good.

I beat Hob yesterday.  I wasn't very impressed with it to be honnest.  The fighting, while not the main draw of the game, was pretty basic.  The puzzles were very standard fare as well and there was more overall jank than I was expecting.  It's an adventure game a la Zelda with an isometric point of view that focuses on puzzle solving. The main gimmick is that you terraform the environment as you solve puzzles, bringning up new area's or altering them.  The overworld is mostly organic, with a mechanical system of caves below in which robots seem to be tinkering away to keep everything up and running.  Yet this is never delved any deeper in to, it's just an excuse as to why there's switch's and levers all over the place.

The premise of the terraforming could be great too, but because of the isometric viewpoint you lack the feeling of place and the perspectives to really make the most out of it.  You can't enjoy a panorama when all you're doing is looking at your feet the whole game.  As a result you don't feel any accomplishment when something big happens.

5/10

I beated Ys 2

It was better than Ys 1. Cooler projectiles from bosses, I was a piece of shit and cheesed the last boss and the final area bored me a little too much with how much jrpging i had to do.

Finished SteamWorld Dig 2 and Days Gone!

Funny, when I was playing SteamWorld, I didn't even realize I was fighting the final boss. Figured it was just a mini-boss... then the credts rolled!

The Final Fantasy remake is finished.  I really enjoyed it, especially the battle system.  I played just a little bit of the original and probably would've been turned off by this if it kept the old turn based system. Well, you could choose that but that's not nearly as fun.

How did you like a Fisherman's Tale?  I think I even purchased that fo my Quest a while back.  Isn't that the game where you're looking at yourself in a diorama (or something like that)?

Yes it's pretty cool but really short. I wrote a review for most of those games on that backlog site. Yes it's a game where you see a puppet diaoroma but then you can become the puppet and also see another smaller diorama and so on. Cool but really short.

Saw the end credits for Monster Hunter Rise but definitely not “finished” with the game. While it does feel easier then say World, especially the single player focused portion, it’s still a total blast to play. The multiplayer portion though is more challenging. Fighting the Apex versions of monsters in Rampage quests can be very intense. Some great quality of life improvements in this game and the game is more focused on getting right to the meat of it which is fighting monsters and crafting better gear. The game is overflowing with the typical Capcom charm and little flourishes. I love what the wire bug brings to the game and really hope that it makes its way into Monster Hunter World 2. Kind of 50/50 on the the whole Spiribirds thing and having to run around and get them on the map to fully max out health/stamina/attack/defense but they’re all over and not really that bad to get. The canteen was a bit better in World as you had a nicer looking variety of food but that’s a very minor gripe. Fantastic game all around though. 9/10

I really enjoyed the Rise demo, I can't seem to get into this series maybe this is the one. Great review.
