Reminds me of when my children got into Q-Bert for a couple of weeks because they were confused as to who he was in Wreck it Ralph. My son enjoyed the original , but was far more interested in the rebooted version.
I remember making a thread at least 10 years ago about how everyone would go about introducing games to their (eventual) kids. Most of us, me included said we'd start with the old, simpler stuff and work up to modern day from there.
As with much in life, that didn't work out like we envisioned it.

My one nephew started with NES, SNES, Genesis/Mega Drive and N64.
But his younger brother started with Wii U and PS4.

I actually kind of went that route. Or at least I tried to. His younger days were really spent playing more games on the Wii than anything else. The fact was though, games for the Wii were probably easier to pick up than anything I showed him for the NES.
Wii games were also better.
Anyway, since I had downloaded the Atari
Flashback games from PlayStation now, as kind of a joke we thought we would have him play Combat with me. Kind of show him what life was like in 1980.
Much to my Surprise he actually enjoyed it. He definitely complained about the controls, which in fairness we all did even back then. but once he figured it out it was actually beating me too. And after a couple rounds I was ready to hang it up and he asked if we could keep playing. Good times.
