The difference for me is that Rhythm heaven is about instinct where many rhythm games are about memorising things, or just watching icons line up.

visual cues, audio cues (you still have to follow a series of scripted actions in exactly the way the designer wanted you) ...
like steel said, different kind of monkey, but monkey no less
ps i'm not hating on rhythm games i love them, but there's only a slight differentiation between rhythm heaven and other rhythm monkeys

gamingeek said:Well I dislike all rhythm games just about.
Except Rhythm Heaven.
I only liked the one where you sang along. The ping pong one busted my balls.

If DDR is considered a rhythm game then I love that one. I don't play it as much as I used to (because once my body hit 30 it stopped liking the game), but if you get a good song list then it's a good time provided you don't mind looking like an ass. Over the years I've had at least 4 or 5 versions of the game. Good way to get a work out, and it lets me indulge in my secret fantasy of being a Japanese schoolgirl (that's a different personality from Dark Robio for the record).
As far as others in the category go I'm not a huge fan. Primarily because I'm white and I really don't have rhythm so I'm at a natural disadvantage. Oh and just because you're waiting for it, Rhythm Heaven sucks.
Donkey Konga with bongos is a fun experience but it has some very lame songs on there ( nick knack paddy wack, Macarena). But the bongo's redeem it.
bugsonglass said:gamingeek said:Initially I liked Donkey Konga but the novelty wore off soon. Rhythm games aren't for me, I like Rhythm Heaven because its so different, you aren't waiting for icons to line up on screen like a monkey.well, the difference is so small. you still have to perform simple actions to the rhythm which come with visual clues except you can't depend on those alone, you have to use the audio clues and the rhythm (so you couldn't play the game without the sound (except a few of the mini games) whereas you could technically play a game like guitar hero or donkey konga with the sound off).
so rhythm heaven is a monkey game as well
I disturbed my wife once by doing that. I was practicing a hard song over and over again, and woke up one night and had the sound off so not to wake her up. She woke up anyway and saw me there, reminded her of Bart Simpson flying a kite at night.
Marge: And Bart isn't doing very well either. He needs boundaries and structure. There's something about flying a kite at night that's so unwholesome.
Bart: Hello, Mother dear.

You can play any game without sound, but how many can you without video?

Well I'll just say he's having a blast with it. We exchanged gifts with my step-daughter last night who got it for him and the boy is now going nuts with it. Song list is a little odd, but those bongos really do make up for a lot.
Getting back to the original RB has made me want to get the second game, and perhaps the classic rock expansion pack. I have a band with my eldest daughter, and we have been chipping away at world tour for the better part of the last 3 or 4 days. She sings, I play guitar.
SteelAttack said:Been playing a lot of Rock Band and RB: The Beatles during the past few days. I got The Beatles RB for my wife as a christmas present. It's alright for what it is, some of their older stuff is still amazing, and having 3 singers simultaneously is madness.

rock band/guitar hero games are great fun to play with other people. i took my copy of GH:WT along with my guitar and mic at a friend's who was having a christmas party for a bunch of people (he also had one guitar) and everybody there had a great time even people who never played it or even knew what it was.
we are thinking about organising another party which will be dedicated to playing GH and RB. everyone's happy to chip in to get a toy drum kit but nobody has room for it
