What's the haps, chaps?

Have you feelings changed on this system? My hype level has dropped significantly. I don't know whether I feel like a new system so soon.

How about you guys? I'm not sure what the killer app is. Maybe RE Revelations but only because of the graphics and it being in 3D?

I'm more interested in the 3D movies aspect and whether I will be able to stream 3D movies off the wireless internet onto this device.

I am expecting Nintendo to drop a pretty huge PR bomb at the start of the year.  They have so many titles already out in Japan that we have not heard about for so long for both the Wii and the DS.  Right now they want to sell as many Wii's and DS' in this season as possible, so pumping the PR on a future system would not be smart.

My feelings have'nt changed:

  • I'm cautiously waiting for the Western pricing,
  • I find the lack of a second joystick discouraging
  • I don't care about the 3D.
  • I'm concerned about the system being washed out with ports from prior generations

If it's under $300 I am getting one at launch, mostly because I've been holding off on an XL for so long.

I wonder if the graphics boost and subsequent production cost boost is going to affect the gaming output?

I'm worried about the touch screen being used more like a mouse cause all the action will be on the top 3D screen.

can't answer the question directly.  there isn't anything i can get particularly excited about presently, be it gaming related or otherwise.  i expect i will get one within one year after it's released, or shortly thereafter.  out of habit more than anything else

It looks good, the games look good, and I'm sure at some point I will get it. However I will not pay over $200 for the system. To date, the only system I've ever paid more than $200 for has been the Wii and as happy as I've ever been with it I don't think I could do that again for any system.

I still think it will be even more popular than the DS and it will change gaming and all mobile devices forever. One of the most important devices to come out in years, its going to be a monumental event. It will spark the movement to have 3D in every day devices without the need for glasses. Soon we will have 3D Iphones, 3D cameras, 3D monitors, 3D digital picture frames, and yes 3D TVs with no glasses which is already in the works but it will get a huge boost in attention when the 3DS hits.

Plus it may have the best 3rd party support of any system anywhere and it has Nintendo doing first party. I have no doubt it will be the greatest handheld ever and I want it day one.

Meh, like Pachter said, handheld gaming is a thing of the past.

I forgot about that part. I think because the big thing about it is 3D and we can't see that feature until we have it in our hands, the hype from journalists doesn't transfer to me so readily. I bet when I see it in first person it will be like:

it's certainly not too soon. It's a more powerful DS with 3D, what's not to like? Although I don't have a DS I'm considering this, not at launch of course, it's going to cost too much. Hype level is up to the games, it will be a while until it has a library I care about enough to buy it. It depends on if we'll see new home systems by then too.

Too soon for me personally. But I'm sure I will cave and get a launch model.

I still don't want it. But I'll probably end up getting one, a couple years down the road. And I won't play it.

Endless Ocean 3DS would be pretty amazing though.

+1!

It would indeed be great, even with the pint-sized screen! Like a small aquarium in the palm of your hands!

Some of the danger stuff would be super cool. Or the vertical stuff where you swim up really high chambers. I think the game might give Leo a heart attack.

Do you guys think that the 3DS is the perfect platform for Survival horror games?

It's obvious that smaller, darker environments can have more detail pushed in the environments and shaders and lighting help with these games set in dark environments.

Couple this with 3D and this could potentially be an awesome platform for survival horror.

Not sure.  Maybe not as immersive as a dark room and a big fuckoff LCD + surround sound

It's awesome for whatever awesome games they make for it. It will be fine for more open games too as long as it's taken advantage of... 3D Twilight Princess with pixel shader effects on top like normal mapping, reflections, fancy lighting, real time shadowing and whatever else wouldn't exactly look bad, and it should be able to handle something like that, if not more, just fine. I don't think Mercenaries' problem is that it's got more open maps but that it's a port so you have content made for higher polygon counts stripped down to fit on lower end hardware. Even if it still retains some of the fancy effects it just looks dodgier. Still, it's just a launch window port.

What I've found with the PSP though is that a 4 inch screen 10 inches from your face is like a 50 inch TV 6 feet away.

Metric:

What I've found with the PSP though is that a 120 mm screen 300 mm from your face is like a 1250 mm TV 2 metres away.
